Ryan Williams couldn’t quite catch the leaders, but he still earned himself a nice bonus Sunday at Point Grey Golf & Country Club.

Williams closed with a three-under 69 in the final round of the $175,000 Freedom 55 Financial Open and his 72-hole total of 10-under par made him the low Canadian in the season-opening event of the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Canada circuit.

The low Canadian each week earns a $2,500 bonus from Freedom 55 and the Canadian player of the year will be awarded $25,000 at the end of the season.

A.J. Ewart knows his time at Point Grey Golf & Country Club this week is all about experience and trying to soak up whatever he can on the biggest stage of his young golfing life.

But the 17-year-old Coquitlam resident, last year’s B.C. Juvenile Boys champion, is also hoping to make a few birdies. He made only one in Thursday’s first round of the Freedom 55 Financial Classic, the season-opening event on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit.

A few wayward drives cost Ewart as he opened with a four-over 76, but he wasn’t going to let that sour him on what he recognizes is a great opportunity.

The Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit could certainly use some additional Canadian content and a summer series of four events announced Friday will help address that issue.

The Mackenzie Tour has partnered with Canada Life for four 54-hole tournaments that will be for Canadian residents only. The first two tournaments will be held next month at the Bear Mountain Resort near Victoria with the final two events scheduled for the TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in early September.

Each event of what is being called the Canada Life Series will offer a purse of $50,000 Cdn. More importantly, the series will offer players an opportunity to earn some status on next year’s Mackenzie Tour.

(August 12, 2024) - A spirited playoff push by Surrey’s Adam Svensson fell just short at the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship.

Svensson entered the final regular-season event at No. 82 on the FedEx Cup points list and needed to move inside the top 70 to qualify for the lucrative three-event playoffs.

For anybody else, winning the PGA Tour Canada stop in Ottawa, The Forces & Families Open, finishing 13th on the Order of Merit and coming second in the Canada Cup would be a good golf year, but for Summerland’s Greg Machtaler, it was only the tip of the iceberg.

“My back was in rough shape and I really only played half the season with a close-to-healthy back,” said the 31-year-old who now calls Kelowna home. “One of the reasons why I’m looking so forward to 2015 is I’m feeling good, my back is getting close to 100 per cent and I know that if I play like I did at the end of last year, I’ll have a good chance of finishing top-5 here and getting my Web.com card for next year.”

Albin Choi made the biggest move among the Top-10, gaining 102 spots in the world rankings after finishing tied for fifth at the Web.com Tour Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. It was the third-best career finish for the Golf Canada Young Pro Squad member and helped him move from No. 10 in the Canadian rankings up to No. 7. Choi picked up 3.08 world ranking points, his third-straight points-paying finish.

While Choi made the biggest move inside the Top-10, it was Adam Cornelson making the biggest move of the week with his win at Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada’s Bayview Place Island Savings Open. The Langley, B.C., native gained 882 spots in the world rankings after picking up his first career win while setting a new 72-hole scoring record on the Mackenzie tour. It was quite the turnaround for Cornelson, who finished 94th on the money list last year to lose his Tour status. After finishing tied for ninth at Q-School, he earned exempt status through the first four events of the year. The win was worth 6.00 world ranking points and moved him from No. 29 up to No. 14 in the Canadian rankings.

Jared du Toit’s performance at the RBC Canadian Open vaulted him 35 spots in the world rankings to a career-high No. 25 in the world. It was only his second career professional tournament and the University of Arizona senior finished two shots ahead of World No. 1 Jason Day and just two back of former teammate and former top-ranked amateur Jon Rahm. Du Toit captured the Gary Cowan Medal as Low Amateur as a result of his finish

Garrett Rank, a former top-ranked amateur in Canada, gained 13 places in the world rankings after finishing in a tie for 77th at the RBC Canadian Open.

Andrew Harrison moved back into the Top-20 with a 32-place gain in the world rankings. He is coming off a third-place finish at the Alberta Amateur.

Ki Taek Lee got his senior campaign at Arizona State off to a solid start, climbing 272 spots in the world rankings after finishing in a tie for second at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invite; it was the best career result for the senior and moved him back into the Top-20 in the Canadian rankings at No. 15.

Fellow Canadian and Arizona State teammate Jared du Toit, the No. 1-ranked amateur in Canada, finished in a tie for 48th.

Abbotsford's Adam Hadwin picked up eight places in the world rankings after finishing tied for 21st at the PGA’s CIMB Classic. The result was worth 2.93 world ranking points, his best points-paying finish since a Top-10 result almost three months ago at John Deere Classic.

Lawren Rowe continued his upward movement inside the Top-10, picking up another 158 spots in the world rankings after finishing in a tie for sixth at the Western Washington Invitational. The result enabled the third year golfer at the University of Victoria move up to the No. 5 ranking in Canada. Over the course of the last two weeks, Rowe has gained 699 spots in the world rankings.

Nick Taylor made the biggest move among the Top-10, gaining 52 spots in the world rankings with a tie for fifth at the PGA’s Puerto Rico Open – his second-best career result, behind only his first PGA Tour victory last year. It was his first Top-10 result of the season and was worth 4.96 world ranking points – his third points-paying finish in the last seven weeks.

No. 1 ranked Graham DeLaet climbed two spots after finishing in a tie for 11th at the PGA’s Puerto Rico Open. The result was worth 2.76 world ranking points for his third straight points-paying finish in as many tournaments. The Weyburn, Sask., native has climbed 40 spots in the world rankings over the last four weeks.

Abbotsford, B.C.'s Nick Taylor has been named a finalist for PGA TOUR rookie of the year.

A graduate from the Web.com Tour a year ago, Taylor won his first PGA TOUR title in just his fourth start at the Sanderson Farms Championship. 

The former top-ranked amateur in the world went on to finish 101st in FedEx Cup standings and 93rd on the tour money list ($1,072,360), recording one top-10 finish and two top 25s with 17 made cuts.

OAKVILLE, Ontario, and PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida — Four-time PGA TOUR winner Stephen Ames and PGA TOUR member Julian Etulain will captain the teams from the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada and PGA TOUR Latinoamérica at the inaugural Aruba Cup, December 12-18 at Tierra del Sol Resort and Golf, it was announced along with a new logo for the event.

Ames, who played on the Mackenzie Tour from 1990 to 1991 and has amassed more than $20 million in career earnings and Etulain, a three-time PGA TOUR Latinoamérica winner who earned his PGA TOUR card for the 2016-17 season, will lead the teams of 10 players each in the President’s Cup-style match play event at Tierra del Sol.

Vancouver, January 31, 2020 – Canadian Pacific (CP) and Golf Canada announced today that BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has been chosen as the primary charity partner for the 2020 CP Women’s Open. Fundraising initiatives will occur leading up to the tournament and a month-long public match campaign starts February 1st, in recognition of Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Month.

“The CP Women’s Open is an amazing opportunity to draw attention to the important work being done by doctors to mend the hearts of the future,” said Keith Creel, President and CEO of CP. “Partnering with BC Children’s Hospital Foundation again is a natural fit and progression from our first partnership in 2015. OTTAWA, Ont. – When Michelle Liu qualified for the 2019 CP Women’s Open at 12 years, 9 months and 6 days old, it was a record that many thought would last for the foreseeable future.

Then came Lucy Lin.

On Monday, Lin earned a spot in the 2022 CP Women’s Open via a 3-for-1 playoff in the Final Qualifier at The Marshes Golf Club in Ottawa, Ont. and when she tees it up at Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club on Thursday at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 12 days, she will become the youngest female ever to qualify for Canada’s National Women’s Open.

When we last saw Adam Hadwin, he was signing autographs in Palm Springs with a smile on his face, even though deep inside, he had to be hurting after coming T2 to unheralded Adam Long at the 60th Anniversary Desert Classic.

Hadwin has spent the last week in his Scottsdale home, finishing his break and now he’s ready to tackle his “home game” of a golf tournament, the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Hadwin was part of Wednesday’s Annexus Pro-Am, which utilizes the innovative and effective two-pro tag-team format. For Hadwin, that meant playing the back 9 at TPC Scottsdale (Stadium) course at 9:40 a.m. with amateurs Donn Lux, Chris Lane, Wayne Cheplin and Rick Tigner, and getting to experience the craziness of the 16th hole, which was already in full throat Wednesday morning.

GREAT ABACO, The Bahamas – Canadian Adam Svensson picked up his first Web.com Tour win at The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at The Abaco Club in his 58th career start.

The 34-year-old from Surrey, British Columbia carded a final-round, 4-under-par 68. His 17-under-par 271 total was good for a one-stroke victory over rookie phenom Sungjae Im, who missed a 10-footer on the 72nd hole to force overtime.

“It's a relief,” said Svensson, who couldn’t see Im’s birdie bid at the last. “Your heart is racing and when it's over it slows down, and you realize what you've done. I just so thrilled I got the win and just so happy.”

HAMILTON, Ont. – James Allenby of Langley, B.C., Thomas DeMarco of LaSalle, Ont., Étienne Brault of Mercier, Que and JC Deacon of Toronto have all earned entry into the 2019 RBC Canadian Open through Final Qualifying at Heron Point Golf Links in Alberton, Ont.

Allenby was the low qualifier by carding a 4 under par 67. Four birdies on the final six holes helped him qualify for his first RBC Canadian Open. 

“You just have to keep playing,” said Allenby of his four back nine birdies. “I can’t really tell you what it was. Two 30-footers went in and those are always nice. I’ve been putting well all year, so I’m not surprised, but I’m very happy. My mental game has really taken a step up this year, and that will help me get around [Hamilton Golf & Country Club].”
