Nick Taylor went head to head with two of the best players in the world and never blinked. And while the Abbotsford native had to settle for second place, he earned one heck of a nice consolation prize at the PGA TOUR’s WM Phoenix Open.

Taylor took home $2.18 million as he finished the star-stacked $20-million event at TPC Scottsdale at 17-under par, two shots behind new world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler...

(November 11, 2024) - In his 10 years on the PGA TOUR, Nick Taylor has collected more than just his four wins and millions of dollars in prize money. He has also gained considerable perspective.

That comes in handy this time of year, when Taylor is battling to remain in the top 60 on the FedEx Cup points list and gain entry into a pair of Signature events in 2025.

“I have definitely sweated out different scenarios in my time on Tour and this isn’t one of them,” Taylor said in a telephone interview. “I am not out here battling for my card like some guys are.”

AURORA, Ont. – Golf Canada and Canadian Pacific (CP) have announced the names of 13 players who have received exemptions to compete in the 2019 CP Women’s Open, set to take place at Magna Golf Club from August 19-25. Headlining the list of exemptions is Canadian Golf Hall of Fame honoured member and CP Ambassador Lorie Kane.

The Charlottetown native will be making a record-setting 29th appearance at the CP Women’s Open appearance, besting World Golf Hall of Fame member JoAnne Carner (28) for most all-time appearances at the event.

Joining Kane will be a teenager who made national headlines last month, Vancouver’s Michelle Liu, who finished as the low Canadian at the 2019 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship in July to earn an exemption. Liu will be 12 years, nine months and seven days when she tees off at Magna Golf Club, becoming the youngest player ever to appear at the CP Women’s Open.

The record was previously held by Canadian star Brooke Henderson, who played as a 14-year-old in 2012.

Phil Jonas is getting another crack at the U.S. Senior Open. Jonas played his way into the event for the second straight year, winning the lone spot up for grabs at a qualifier Monday in Sequim, Wash.

The 56-year-old Jonas, who runs a golf academy in his name at Hazelmere Golf Club in Surrey, shot a three-under 69 at The Cedars at Dungeness to beat a field of 51 players by two shots. 

“I played decently today after playing so poorly last week at the PGA of B.C. Seniors tourney,” Jonas said in a telephone interview. “I was happy with the way I played.

Phil Jonas is about to complete the Senior Open double.

Five years ago, Jonas played in the Senior Open Championship at Turnberry Golf Club in Scotland. On Monday, the 55-year-old Surrey-based teaching pro played his way into this summer’s U.S. Senior Open.

Roger Sloan wasn’t born Yesterday. Of course he knows who the Beatles are. Sloan, the 32-year-old Merritt product who is wrapping up a successful season on the PGA TOUR, laughs when the subject of the Fab Four is broached. “That is a funny story,” Sloan says.

It was at the John Deere Classic earlier this month when CBS golf analyst Peter Kostis suggested on air that Sloan, who was in contention that week, didn’t really know anything about John, Paul, Ringo and George. Sloan says that could not be further from the truth.

A group of Canadian hopefuls has been looking to advance through one of five Web.com Tour qualifying events across the United States from Oct. 30 – Nov. 9.

Field sizes at each event are approximately 75 players with no cut. The number of applicants advancing from each site will be on a pro rata basis (i.e., approximately the same percentage from each site will advance), and such number will be announced during the Second Qualifying Stage.

All applicants tying for the last qualifying position at the conclusion of play at each site will advance.

The quest to earn Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada status begins this week at Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee, California, where 120 players will look to earn their cards to compete on the Mackenzie Tour this season.

Among players to keep an eye on are Mission, BC's Kevin Stinson who has 38 Mackenzie Tour - PGA TOUR Canada starts to his credit and is looking to regain full status.

Stuart Macdonald has conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour and knows that means he must take advantage of every opportunity he gets to play. So far, the Vancouver native is doing just that. Macdonald had his best-ever finish on the Korn Ferry Tour this past weekend when he tied for 27th at the Utah Championship.

Macdonald has drawn into three events this year on the Korn Ferry Tour and has made the cut in each tournament. That will help him when the tour reshuffles its priority rankings in late July.

Chalk up one more Canadian to watch for on PGA Tour leaderboards during the 2014-15 season.

With Abbotsford, B.C.'s Adam Hadwin and Merrit, B.C.'s Roger Sloan having already secured their PGA Tour playing privileges after cracking the top 25 on the Web.com Tour's regular season money list, the stage was set for one of the most clutch final rounds in Canadian golf history.

(December 2, 2024)  - Yeji Kwon sailed through her first qualifying school test and now hopes she can ace the final exam.

That would be the final stage of the LPGA Tour’s Qualifying Series, which goes Dec. 5-9 in Mobile, Ala. The 18-year-old Port Coquitlam resident earned her spot in the final stage back in late October when she tied for 10th at second-stage qualifying.

That finish has earned her good Epson Tour status for 2025, but the former Canadian Junior Girls champion doesn’t want to settle for that.

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Hudson Swafford won the fittingly named CareerBuilder Challenge on Sunday for his first PGA TOUR title, following three straight birdies with a closing par for a one-stroke victory.

Swafford shot a 5-under 67 on the Stadium Course at PGA West to finish the three-course, pro-am event at 20-under 268. Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C.,came back with a 70 after his third-round 59 to finish second.

MAZATLAN, Mexico — West Vancouver, B.C., native David Rose shot a final-round 70 to claim medallist honours and earn full status on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica in 2016.

The 26-year-old began the day with a two-stroke lead over American William Kropp. Rose finished at 15-under, posting under par scores all four days to claim a one-stroke victory over Mexico’s Gerardo Ruiz. Rose – a former Lynn University Fighting Knight and the 2011 B.C. Amateur champion – becomes the second Canadian in as many weeks to finish atop the leaderboard at PGA Tour Latinoamérica Q-School.

Austin James gained 20 spots in the world rankings after finishing in a tie for second at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational. It was the No. 3 ranked amateur in Canada’s seventh straight Top-10 result and his third consecutive Top-5 showing. His 10-under 206 total was the third lowest in school history.

Alistair Docherty picked up 19 places in the world rankings after finishing runner-up at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, just three strokes behind the winner. The result moved the senior at Chico State up to No. 5 in the Canadian rankings. The New Brunswick native, currently the top-ranked Division II golfer, was also one of 10 collegiate golfers selected to represent the U.S. in the 2016 Palmer Cup – the collegiate version of the Ryder Cup.

The road just got a little bit busier for the latest winner on the PGA TOUR. There's a special fraternity of three Canadians that will be playing at the Masters this year.

The latest addition to that fraternity grew up about 1 hour east of Vancouver in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Conference championship week saw several Canadians in action. Top-ranked Jared du Toit finished in a tie for 19th at the PAC-12 Championship. The tournament was won by the National Amateur Team member’s Arizona State teammate – and current world No. 1 – Jon Rahm.

Joey Savoie makes his return to the Top-10, replacing fellow Saint Leo teammate Hugo Bernard.

Weekly Top-10 Rankings For Week of January 11, 2016

Eric Banks lost ground in the world rankings this week, but the No. 4 ranked amateur player in Canada was the only Top-10 golfer to get his 2016 campaign underway. The Golf Canada National Team member from Truro, N.S., finished in a tie for 52nd at the Australian Master of the Amateurs Championship.

For the 10th straight week, Jared du Toit holds down the No. 1 amateur ranking in Canada.

Outside the Top-10, Tony Gil and Andrew Harrison slipped down the rankings by four and 54 spots, respectively. No new players entered the Top-20 this past week.

VENICE, Fla. – Four Canadians were among 84 competitors that advanced to Stage III of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament on Sunday at the Plantation Golf & Country Club.

Megan Osland of Kelowna, B.C., led all 10 Canadians in the field, finishing at 5-over par (72-72-73-76) to grab a share of 30th. Team Canada graduate and Calgary product Jennifer Ha was the next Canadian in line, closing at 7-over par (69-71-79-76) to end in a tie for 47th.

The PGA Champions circuit won’t be making a third stop at Bear Mountain in 2018.

The senior tour’s 2018 schedule was released recently and does not include the Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship, which had been held at the Victoria-area resort the past two Septembers.

The tournament’s demise should not come as a surprise. This year’s event, which was won by Jerry Kelly, was the only event on the PGA Tour Champions 2017 schedule that did not have TV coverage after the tournament sponsor failed to ante up for Golf Channel coverage.

The only Canadian stop remaining on the PGA Tour Champions schedule is the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary. That event goes Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club.
