Every April — well, every April except this one — the top pro golfers, avid golf fans and hordes of media members make a mass migration to Augusta, Ga., and descend upon exclusive and private Augusta National Golf Club for the Masters. Thanks to this annual televised celebration of golf, diehard Masters fans may feel like they know the grounds and history of ANGC as well as their local muni.

But how much do you really know about Augusta National? The truth is, despite the fact that 83 Masters tournaments have been contested there, the hallowed grounds of the club are still shrouded in mystery — and history.

Tuesday I attended, along with my friend Dana Prince, my first golf event in many years strictly as a spectator.

As the Augusta National Golf Club buzzed with anticipation during the iconic Par Three Contest, the presence of Canadian golfers Mike Weir, Nick Taylor, Adam Hadwin, and Corey Conners added an extra layer of excitement to the proceedings. But what truly stole the show was the heartwarming sight of these talented athletes sharing the moment with their families, as they brought their children and spouses along for a memorable day on the course.

Shane Doan made history Wednesday as the first NHLer to play in the Annexus Pro-Am at the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open. And he brought a few of his hockey playing friends.

Doan’s caddy is arguably even more popular, as Paul “Biz Nasty” Bissonnette, best known for his Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, was Doan’s caddy for the first part of the day before his popularity with the fans had Doan “replace” Bissonnette with a friend with fewer fans for the final 9 holes. 

And also inside the ropes were former Phoenix Coyotes alumni, including goalie Curtis Joseph and wingers Darcy Hordichuk, Greg Adams and Brad May.

(February 3, 2025) - Vancouver native Anna Huang is doing her own version of the Marrakesh Express.

The 16-year-old is back in Morocco this week where she will make her professional debut at the Ladies European Tour’s Lalla Meryem Cup at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat.

Just before Christmas, Huang travelled to Marrakesh where she earned status for this year’s LET Tour at qualifying school. She had entered Q-school as an amateur, so she had a decision to make once she earned playing status. It didn’t take her long to decide that she would turn pro.

Nick Taylor says he will take many positives from his just-concluded 2017 PGA TOUR season and can’t wait until next year. He won’t have to wait long. The 2018 PGA TOUR campaign starts in just over a month at the Safeway Open in Napa, Calif., which goes Oct. 13-16.

Until then, Taylor will enjoy some down time and work on sharpening the one part of his game that he felt at times let him down this past season. That would be his putting. “On the greens I wasn’t great this year putting, so I think that is an area where I can get better,” Taylor said in an interview with British Columbia Golf.

Very quietly, which is kind of his style, Nick Taylor is putting together a solid year on the PGA TOUR.

This past weekend in North Carolina, the Abbotsford native finally got the top-10 result at the Wells Fargo Championship that he felt he should have had at both the Valero Texas Open and the RBC Heritage tourneys in April.

Taylor closed with a one-under 71 at the Wells Fargo, birdieing the 72nd hole to finish inside the top 10 in a tie for eighth place.

Nick Taylor has some great memories of the U.S. Open, but they are distant. He now has a chance to create some new ones. After a 10-year wait,Taylor is finally heading back to the U.S. Open.

Taylor sailed through a 36-hole sectional qualifier in Dallas on Monday to earn a spot in next month’s 119th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links on California’s Monterey Peninsula.

The 31-year-old Abbotsford pro carded rounds of 66 and 65 to finish at 10-under par. That made him co-medalist with fellow PGA TOUR member Brendon Todd. 

Adam Hadwin finished tied for 16th at PGA’s Northern Trust Open, his second straight Top-20 result of the season. His final-round 66 was the best score of the day and the finish marked his best career result at Riviera, which was good for a 15-spot gain in the world rankings for the No. 3 ranked golfer in Canada.

His gain of 4.95 world ranking points was his third points-paying finish in the last four tournaments. He has earned a total of almost 16 world ranking points over that span and if he can make up the 14-place gap between himself and No. 2 Graham DeLaet by the second week in July, he will qualify for one of two Olympic spots for Canada.

Fellow Abbotsford, B.C., native Nick Taylor made the biggest gain among the Top-10, picking up 28 spots in the world rankings after finishing in a tie for 26th at Riviera. That was good for 2.67 world ranking points – the second straight points-paying finish in as many weeks for the No. 4 ranked golfer in Canada.

Rickie Fowler closed out the second round of the 2019 Waste Management Open with four consecutive birdies to take a one-stroke lead over roommate Justin Thomas heading into one of the greatest weekends in golf.

Fowler followed up his opening round 64 with a 65, and he made the closing holes look effortless. Reaching the par-5 15th in two, he made a routine two-putt birdie before hitting his approach to the rowdy par-3 16th to just under 11 feet. He made that putt as fans cheered lustily for him and then at 17, he drove the green and another routine two-putt birdie pulled him into a tie for the lead with Thomas.

Adam Hadwin doesn’t quite know what to expect, on or off the golf course, as he heads to England for his first Open Championship.“I haven’t been over there, I have never been to Europe, not even to vacation or anything,” Hadwin tells British Columbia Golf. “It is going to be different, but I am looking forward to that challenge.”

Well, for starters, Adam, they drive on the left side of the road over there. Seriously, that figures to be the least of Hadwin’s worries. He is more concerned about the crash course in links golf that will begin when he arrives at Royal Birkdale, site of the July 20-23 Open Championship.

He won’t be mistaken for The Incredible Hulk, but Adam Hadwin has used the longest break of his professional golf career to try and add a little muscle.

After a highly successful 2023 season that ended in early October with a runner-up finish at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas, Hadwin could have rested on his laurels.

And he’s certainly enjoyed plenty of down time with his wife Jessica and their soon to be four-year-old daughter Maddox. But Hadwin has also been hitting the gym harder than he ever has.

(June 7, 2015 – Victoria, B.C.) – With a final round 4-under 66, Surrey, B.C's Albin Choi captured his first Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada victory on Sunday at Uplands Golf Club, claiming the Bayview Place Island Savings Open presented by Times Colonist.

The 23-year old came out of the gate hot on Sunday, making birdies on four of his first five holes to separate himself from the field, then held on down the stretch to win by three over North Vancouver's Eugene Wong, fellow Surrey native Adam Svensson and Murfreesboro, Tennessee’s Jason Millard.

Those were the odds 33-year-old Ryan Williams faced by trying to Monday qualify for the 2015 Waste Management Open at the party-crazed TPC Scottsdale during Super Bowl Week.

Langley’s James Allenby rose to the top against many of the PACIFIC NORTHWEST’S top Pros at the Johnston Meier Insurance Vancouver Open this weekend at Northview Golf & Country Club.

Allenby’s win came in dramatic fashion, closing his final round out in style with a 2-putt birdie en route to a stellar round of 6-under par 66 and a one-shot win over Victoria’s Steven Lecuyer and Oregon’s Nick Sherwood.

Allenby’s 3-day total of 69, 70, 66 (-11) bettered a full field of 142 players including 48 Professionals heralding from as far east as Edmonton, Alberta to as far south as Albany, Oregon.

VANCOUVER, B.C. (AUGUST 25, 2024) - It was a five-foot putt, the kind Delta’s Jace Minni has spent countless hours practising on the putting green while imagining he needed to sink each one for a big win.

This time it was for real and Minni rolled it in to win the Odlum Brown Vancouver Open. “It was probably half a ball outside right,” Minni said of his winning birdie putt on Fraserview Golf Course’s 18th green.

“I have practised my putting so much this past year. I’d be on the putting green going, ‘this is a putt to win, this is a putt to do it,’ and now it finally came to fruition.”

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (August 12, 2024) - A naturalized Canadian from Trinidad and Tobago, 60-year-old Stephen Ames, won his third PGA Tour Champions title of the season and ninth overall at the Boeing Classic.

He won four times on the PGA Tour. “This stage right now, this is all icing on my cake, so I’m just enjoying this and I’m going to take it as long as it goes,” Ames said.

For a good chunk of his PGA TOUR career, Nick Taylor flew under the radar. He was known as a steady, not spectacular, player who quietly went about his business.

Not anymore. Taylor has developed a flair for the dramatic. The bigger the moment, the better he plays. And when he gets in contention, Taylor just hits one clutch shot after another.

He did it again on a magical Sunday on the island of Oahu where Taylor chipped in for eagle on the 72nd hole and then beat Nico Echavarria of Colombia on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Not even an hour into Jordan Spieth’s third round on Saturday at Chambers Bay, the 21-year-old had dropped two bombs for birdies at the second and third holes and sat at (-7) for the tournament and two clear of his closest challenger.

But then Spieth went on a horrendous bogey binge, with mistakes at five of his next eight holes and suddenly, the Texas Grand Slam was now seriously in jeopardy.

Spieth would make one more birdie, at the par-3 15th, but may lament all the short putts he missed on the way in to his (+1) round of 71 that has him in a four-way tie for the lead heading into Sunday’s final round of the U.S. Open.
