With The Masters about to tee it up in a couple of days, we thought it might be interesting to read why one prognosticator includes at least one Canadian in his top 10 picks for players 'Most Likely To Win The Masters'- ed.

Each year for the Masters, I create a filtering process to help determine the players who are most likely to win the green jacket based on criteria that have strongly predicted outcomes at Augusta. I usually get the list down to roughly 20-25 players.

Last year, Dustin Johnson was one of my 21 players who could win the Masters. Dustin was at 9/1 odds. The other top finishers, like Cameron Smith and Sung Jae Im, were filtered out unlike previous years where players that were in contention were typically shortlisted. My theory on that is that due to the tournament being played in November, the course was not playing as firm and as fast as it normally does, and that allowed players who typically do not get through my filter to get into contention.

Canadian content. The PGA TOUR currently has lots of it. The Mackenzie Tour could use more of it.

The four-event Canada Life Series, which begins next week at Bear Mountain near Victoria, is designed in part to give Canadians access to the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit.

Scott Pritchard, the Mackenzie Tour’s executive director, acknowledges that a lack of Canadian content is something of a challenge for his circuit.

Toronto, ON – Following the announcement that Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life are coming together under one brand in the Canadian market – Canada Life – two Mackenzie Tour events will have new names for the 2019 season.

Formerly the Freedom 55 Financial Open, the newly named Canada Life Open will be played in Vancouver, B.C., from May 20-26th at Point Grey G&CC, while the formerly named Freedom 55 Financial Championship will now be known as the Canada Life Championship and played in London, Ont., from September 10-16.

A quick turnaround for Edmonton’s Brad Fritsch cost him some strokes, but didn’t prevent him from making the cut at his second US Open at Chambers Bay.

Fritsch, in the first group out off the 1st tee at 7 a.m., started the day at even par and got it into red numbers with a birdie at the par-5 first hole.

But then a couple of poor swings led to three consecutive bogeys and it was an uphill struggle for the resident of North Carolina who also gets sponsorship from the Ottawa Senators.

To say it’s been a busy start to 2020 for Adam Hadwin is an understatement. Hadwin took a break from golf after his wife Jessica gave birth to their daughter Maddox on Jan. 8, insuring he could spend time with his young family before returning to the PGA TOUR. He was back in time for the Waste Management Open in Phoenix, near his Arizona residence, on Jan. 30.

Hadwin then played in last week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am in Southern California before joining the field for this week’s Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles. “This is only my third tournament back and we’re still trying to get used to being parents,” Hadwin said. “It’s still a bit chaotic at home. It’s definitely a change in our life, but it’s very exciting.”

Fellow Canadian Nick Taylor joins Hadwin at the Genesis Invitational this week. They often played together as teenagers at Ledgeview Golf and Country Club in their hometown of Abbotsford, B.C., and remain friends on the PGA TOUR.

North Plains, Ore. – Canada’s Adam Svensson fired a 5-under-par 66 at Witch Hollow Golf Club at Pumpkin Ridge in the second round and grabbed the lead at the halfway point of the WinCo Foods Portland Open presented by Kraft Heinz, the finale to the Web.com Tour Regular Season.

The 21-year-old Tour rookie’s 12-under-par 130 total is good for a one-stroke cushion over PGA TOUR veteran Dicky Pride (66).

Overnight leader Curtis Thompson (70) and PGA TOUR Latinoamérica alum Ryan Sullivan (67) sit in a tie for third at 10-under-par.

Three back in a tie for fifth are four-time TOUR winner Tim Herron (65) and former PAC-12 Player of the Year Michael Kim (68).

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida — PGA TOUR Champions and Pacific Links International announced that the 2016 Pacific Links Championship, originally set to be contested in Tianjin, China, has moved to Bear Mountain Resort in Victoria, British Columbia. The tournament dates will remain September 19-25, with the field increasing from 60 players to 81 players, and the purse remaining $2.5 million.

The PGA TOUR announced today that Brad Fritsch has violated the PGA TOUR Anti-Doping Policy’s ban on the use of performance-enhancing substances and has been suspended for three months.

Mr. Fritsch self-reported this information after discovering that an ingredient in a supplement that he was taking was on the prohibited list. He has acknowledged his inadvertent error and accepted his suspension. He will be eligible to return on February 28, 2018.

Summer is just getting started and Brooke Henderson has an inkling she is going to have a very good one.

The 19-year-old Canadian LPGA Tour star sounded like she was oozing with confidence in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday. Fresh off a victory this past weekend at the Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids, Mich., Henderson feels like she has turned the corner on what had, by her high standards, been a disappointing start to her 2017 season.

“I really needed this win and I think it's going to turn around my entire season,” Henderson said.

PORTLAND, Ore. –Brooke Henderson captured her first LPGA victory in style, cruising to an eight-shot victory at the Cambia Portland Classic.

“It’s amazing,” Henderson said with a smile. “It’s such an unbelievable thing it’s not even real life yet I don’t think.”

REGINA – Brooke Henderson ended Canada’s long drought at the CP Women’s Open on Sunday, firing a final-round 7-under-par 65 to win the national championship by four strokes. Henderson finished with a 21-under 267 total, sealing the win with a short birdie putt on the 18th hole at the Wascana Country Club.

“It’s amazing, just surreal,” Henderson said. “The crowds here have been so amazing all week, and to finish it off the way I did is really a dream come true.”

American Angel Yin was alone in second place after a 68 and American Jennifer Song (67) was six shots behind at 15 under. Australians Minjee Lee (68) and Su Oh (69) were seven strokes off the pace in a fourth-place tie with South Korea’s Amy Yang (68) and American Austin Ernst (69).

It was the first time a Canadian has won this tournament since Jocelyne Bourassa took the 1973 event – then called La Canadienne – at Montreal.

AUGUSTA, Georgia (Tyler Costigan/Golf Canada) — The Canadian story at Augusta National last Friday was the rebound of National Amateur Squad member Corey Conners.

The Listowel, Ont., native returned to his usual form for Friday’s  2nd round at Augusta, firing a 3-under par 69 despite a double-bogey on the par-4 10th. The 23-year-old Canadian was the only amateur to break par at Augusta National.

Brooke Henderson Had A Dramatic Playoff Win Over Lydia Ko In The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship At Sahalee

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Canada’s Brooke Henderson beat top-ranked Lydia Ko with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff Sunday in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship after overcoming a three-shot deficit on the back nine.

The 18-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ont., ranked No. 4 in the world, closed with a bogey-free 6-under 65 – the best round of the week at Sahalee – to match Ko at 6-under 278. Ko finished with a 67.

In the playoff on the par-4 18th, Henderson hit her second shot from 155 yards to 3 feet, while Ko’s second from farther back in the fairway left her with 20 feet. Ko missed to the left, and Henderson tapped in to cap a week that started with a hole-in-one on her fourth hole of the tournament and ended with a major championship.

Canadians Stuart Macdonald and Albin Choi both advanced to the third and final stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying School on Friday at separate events across the United States.

Macdonald, a Team Canada graduate and Vancouver product, carded a final-round 68 (-4) to finish alone in 7th place. The Purdue University alumnus came in at 11-under par (66-75-68-68) to become the only Canadian to advance at the TPC at Craig Ranch event in McKinney, Texas.

OAKVILLE, Ont. – Brandt Snedeker conquered the dense heat and gusty winds at Glen Abby Golf Club Saturday to card a 6-under 66 and take the lead at the RBC Canadian Open. Heading into the final round, Golf Canada National Amateur Squad member Jared du Toit holds a share of second with Dustin Johnson, one shot off the lead at the 107th playing of Canada’s National Open Championship.

Du Toit tallied three bogeys and a pair of birdies across the front nine, but the resilient 21-year-old went on to finish bogey-free across his final nine holes, collecting a birdie on No. 13 and an eagle on No. 18. The crowd roared in approval and an impromptu performance of O Canada accompanied the Kimberley, B.C., native as he stepped off the course.
