It Remains To Be Seen Whether There Will Be Any Canadian Flags Flying At Chambers Bay For The 2015 U.S. Open

Currently, there are no Canadians scheduled to be amongst the 156 players who will tee it up at Chambers Bay starting June 18.

But come June 8, in what is termed the Longest Day in Golf, at least 22 Canadians will try to overcome their final obstacle, a 36-hole qualifier being played at 10 sites all across America, to get one of the final spots in the U.S. Open.

Three months from now, the best 16-and-younger golfers will compete at the Western Canada Summer Games in Wood Buffalo, AB and British Columbia will be ably represented by 8 of the best young golfers in the country.

Head coach Matt Palsenbarg officially named his team after the CN Future Links event in Qualicum Beach earlier this month and the teams feature a girl’s team of all 15-year-olds and a boys team of 3 16-year-olds and one 15-year-old.

As a pilot project of sorts, the Community Golf Coach program being presented by Golf Canada and the Coaching Association of Canada isn’t about making Joe Public into the world’s greatest golf coach.

Rather, it’s about allowing the members of the public at large to work alongside CPGA professionals as they teach youth about the grand old game.

The first event of Golf Canada’s competitive season concluded in the same way it unfolded – with a pair of Team Canada Development Squad members atop the leaderboards as Trevor Ranton and Grace St-Germain claimed victory at the 2015 CN Future Links Pacific Championship held at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach, B.C.

QUALICUM BEACH, British Columbia (Herb Fung/Golf Canada) — Golf Canada’s 2015 competitive season will begin with the Pacific edition of the CN Future Links Championships.

Hosted at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach, B.C., the competition featuring a field of the nation’s top junior-aged golfers will be held May 7-10 with a number of top players from British Columbia involved.

TORONTO, Ontario (AP) — The head of a Canadian media conglomerate that acquired rights to the NHL in the largest sports deal in the country’s history has been hired as the new chief executive of golf’s European Tour.

Keith Pelley, a 51-year-old Canadian, will replace George O’Grady in the role from this summer. O’Grady takes up a new position as president of international relations.

Washington State Cougars head golf coach Garrett Clegg may have gone to school at Utah, been an assistant coach at the University of Washington for four years and is currently completing his fourth year as WSU’s head coach, but he’s got a huge affinity for Canada.

Not only did he work with Nick Taylor at Washington, his current Cougars squad features fifth-year senior Sang Lee from Calgary and freshman Zach Anderson from Nanaimo.

It was just after 6 p.m. at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale and almost too dark to see anything, but Victoria’s Cory Renfrew smiled so widely that it almost lit up the course.

Renfrew, listed officially as a Scottsdale resident – he does live here with roommate Eric Hawerchuk, as they chase their golf dreams – is the pride of Victoria and shot a (-6) round of 66 on the Pine Course at McCormick Ranch to claim one of the three spots into the Waste Management Open, Phoenix’s biggest party masquerading as a golf tournament.

With the recent announcement by Golf Canada of the athletes selected to represent Team Canada as part of the 2015 National Amateur Squad and Development Squad program, the strength of British Columbia’s contribution to high level amateur golf in this country was further confirmed.

While Surrey’s Adam Svensson was the only player (male or female) from BC to make the National Amateur side, BC’s young women are a big component of the Development Squad.

Of The 5 young women selected to represent Canada on the Development squad, 3 hail from British Columbia, including Naomi Ko, Michelle Kim and Alisha Lau.

In all, eight athletes make up Team Canada’s National Amateur Squad, including four players on the women’s team and four players on the men’s team. The National Development Squad is comprised of 11 athletes (five women and six men).

BARRIE, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Garrett Rank rolled in a short birdie putt on the first playoff hole to capture the 2014 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Barrie Country Club.

Rank, 27, finished the championship tied with Rob Couture of Dallas, Texas at 4-under 284 after Couture forced the pair into a playoff by birdieing the par-5 18th hole in regulation.
