MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Paul McLean of King, Ont. was inducted as Golf Canada’s 112th President during the National Sport Federation’s Annual General Meeting this weekend in Mississauga, Ont.

McLean succeeds 2014 President Douglas Alexander of London, Ont. while Roland Deveau of Bedford, N.S. becomes First Vice-President and Leslie Dunning of Calgary assumes the role of Second Vice-President.

OAKVILLE, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Golf Canada is pleased to announce the six athletes – three female and three male – who have been selected to the 2015 Team Canada Young Pro Squad for the program’s second year of operation.

Comprising the team for 2015 are: Brooke Henderson (Smiths Falls, Ont.); Rebecca Lee-Bentham (Toronto); Sue Kim (Langley, B.C.); Albin Choi (Toronto); Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ont.) and Taylor Pendrith (Richmond Hill, Ont.).

PHOENIX, Arizona (Golf Canada) — Waste Management has announced that the RBC Canadian Open was named the winner of the second annual Sustainability Challenge, a contest sponsored by Waste Management to encourage all PGA TOUR tournaments to engage in and advance sustainable practices at their respective events.

With this distinction, the RBC Canadian Open joins the ranks of the Sustainability Challenge inaugural winner, the Shell Houston Open and the Waste Management Phoenix Open as PGA TOUR tournaments that demonstrate the value of responsible sustainability practices.

It was just after 6 p.m. at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale and almost too dark to see anything, but Victoria’s Cory Renfrew smiled so widely that it almost lit up the course.

Renfrew, listed officially as a Scottsdale resident – he does live here with roommate Eric Hawerchuk, as they chase their golf dreams – is the pride of Victoria and shot a (-6) round of 66 on the Pine Course at McCormick Ranch to claim one of the three spots into the Waste Management Open, Phoenix’s biggest party masquerading as a golf tournament.

With the recent announcement by Golf Canada of the athletes selected to represent Team Canada as part of the 2015 National Amateur Squad and Development Squad program, the strength of British Columbia’s contribution to high level amateur golf in this country was further confirmed.

While Surrey’s Adam Svensson was the only player (male or female) from BC to make the National Amateur side, BC’s young women are a big component of the Development Squad.

Of The 5 young women selected to represent Canada on the Development squad, 3 hail from British Columbia, including Naomi Ko, Michelle Kim and Alisha Lau.

In all, eight athletes make up Team Canada’s National Amateur Squad, including four players on the women’s team and four players on the men’s team. The National Development Squad is comprised of 11 athletes (five women and six men).

BARRIE, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Garrett Rank rolled in a short birdie putt on the first playoff hole to capture the 2014 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Barrie Country Club.

Rank, 27, finished the championship tied with Rob Couture of Dallas, Texas at 4-under 284 after Couture forced the pair into a playoff by birdieing the par-5 18th hole in regulation.

(Golf Canada) - Play at the 2014 Canadian Junior Boys Championship at Legends on the Niagara was temporarily suspended today due to dangerous playing conditions after strong storm cells rolled through the Niagara Falls, Ont. area Wednesday. Play was suspended for the first time at 11:12 AM EDT, and was suspended for the day at 4:15 PM EDT after an attempted resumption of play.

Regina, SK – Team BC has made history at the Regina 2014 North American Indigenous Games (2014 NAIG). They are the first team in the history of the Games to win both the Overall Team Title and the John Fletcher Spirit Award. The John Fletcher Spirit Award is presented to the contingent that best demonstrates the spirit of teamwork, fair play, respect and integrity throughout the NAIG competition week.

Almost everyone who takes golf seriously agrees that the future of the game of golf  lies with developing new junior golfers. After all, as our current golfers age and drop out of the game, we need to replace them with younger golfers who will (hopefully) stay with the game over a longer time frame. 

Adam Svensson made history at Barry University earlier in March, winning his fifth tournament of the season at the Bobcat Invitational in Eatonton, Georgia.

It’s probably a good thing he was named Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year. If only to break the string of ridiculously bad luck Mackenzie Hughes has been dealing with recently.
