It was almost a complete British Columbia sweep of the six Team Canada spots for the 2015 World Junior Girls Golf Championship in Ottawa later this month.

The event, which runs Sept. 20-25 at The Marshes Golf Club, sees three-player teams competing in 72-hole team and individual competitions. Because Canada is the host country, it can field two teams and BC players are front and centre for both squads.

Victoria, B.C. – Brent Wilson of Cobble Hill, B.C. shot a final round 1-under-par 70 to come from behind and win the 31st Pacific Northwest Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

The 54-hole stroke-play championship was held on the Valley Course at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort in Victoria, B.C., and was conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA).

Erik Hanson of Kirkland, Wash., and Rob Olson of Victoria, B.C. will head into the final round of the 31st Pacific Northwest Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship in a tie for the lead at two-under-par 140 after round two.

The Championship, taking place at Bear Mountain Golf Resort’s Valley Course is a 54-hole competition and is being conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA).

The opening round of the 31st Pacific Northwest Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship was held yesterday, September 1st, at Victoria, B.C.’s Bear Mountain Golf Resort on their Valley Course. The 54-hole championship is being conducted by Pacific Northwest Golf Association and concludes on Thursday, September 3rd.

Sean Fallows of Edmonds, Wash., Michael McAleer of Vancouver, B.C., and Craig Doell of Victoria, B.C. share the lead after the first round at three-under-par after each posted scores of 68 on the par-71 Valley Course.

The following message was sent out by Tom Cade, the president of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA) to address the tragic loss of Jamie Fay, the Assistant General Manager at Chambers Bay, host of this year's U.S. Open championship. 

Jamie Fay succumbed to injuries sustained when a tree fell onto his vehicle during the windstorm this past weekend. The PNGA along with many other golf associations including British Columbia Golf want to express their most sincere condolences to Jamie Fay's wife and family following this terrible accident.

North Plains, Ore. – Canada’s Adam Svensson fired a 5-under-par 66 at Witch Hollow Golf Club at Pumpkin Ridge in the second round and grabbed the lead at the halfway point of the WinCo Foods Portland Open presented by Kraft Heinz, the finale to the Web.com Tour Regular Season.

The 21-year-old Tour rookie’s 12-under-par 130 total is good for a one-stroke cushion over PGA TOUR veteran Dicky Pride (66).

Overnight leader Curtis Thompson (70) and PGA TOUR Latinoamérica alum Ryan Sullivan (67) sit in a tie for third at 10-under-par.

Three back in a tie for fifth are four-time TOUR winner Tim Herron (65) and former PAC-12 Player of the Year Michael Kim (68).

The final British Columbia Golf tournament of the year saw Sean Buckles and Karen Zhang crowned as BC Bantam champions, while Bryan Lee earned the BC Novice Boys title at Two Eagles Golf Course and Academy in West Kelowna.

The 36-hole tournament was played under grey skies, as winds carried smoke from American wildfires into the Okanagan.

Karen Zhang of Quilchena Golf & Country Club shot the low round of the day, a (-2) 63 at the par-65 Two Eagles Golf Course & Academy on Monday. Zhang leads Akari Hayashi of Victoria by one stroke, as the two girls were the only players to shoot under par in the Bantam Boys and Girls competition.

The 36-hole tournament at Two Eagles will also determine the Bantam Boys Champion and the Novice Boys Champion. The tournament began Monday morning under smoky skies, as winds carried smoke from American wildfires into the Okanagan.

It may be time for the City of Coquitlam to rename itself ‘Koquitlam’ in honour of Lydia Ko.

For the second time since 2012, the New Zealand citizen has won the Canadian Women’s Open at the Vancouver Golf Club. Add in Ko’s 2013 triumph at Royal Mayfair in Edmonton and Ko has won three of the last four Canadian Women’s Opens.

But it wasn’t easy for Ko, who had to survive a playoff with American Stacy Lewis, who shot a (-5) round of 67 to tie Ko at (-12) for the tournament.

By media attention, Brooke Henderson was the ‘IT’ story for Canadians all week. But by score, at least until Sunday afternoon, it was Alena Sharp who was outplaying Henderson.

That all changed with Henderson’s (-5) round of 67 which vaulted her up the leaderboard and justified all the media attention she received during the week. Henderson finished at (-4) 284 for the tournament.

“It was a really fun day out there today,” said Henderson. “I wanted to show and to give the crowd a little bit of excitement, and I think today, I did that.”

By all rights, Alena Sharp should be the Canadian story at the CP Women’s Open at the Vancouver Golf Club. Sharp is currently the low Canadian, at (-2) 214 after a (-1) round of 71 which included a workmanlike two birdies and one bogey to go with 15 pars.

“I had a lot of good opportunities,” said Sharp of her round. “I just didn’t make putts. I found the pins were pretty tough. I was above some of them today. It was hard to stop it below. . . It was a really good round. I played solid all day.”

But it’s Smiths Falls, ON’s Brooke Henderson, sitting four strokes behind Sharp, who continues to garner all the attention.

When the top players from around the world travel to Vancouver for the CP Canadian Women’s Open one of the great things they do is give of their time for various events surrounding the tournament itself.

Not far removed from being a junior herself, she’s already a ‘veteran’ at the ripe-old age of 20, women’s world number 8 ranked Lexi Thompson came out to Seymour Golf & Country Club in North Vancouver on the Monday of tournament week to put on a clinic for a group of young aspiring players for CN Future Links National Junior Golf Development.

For Tiffany Kong, a week that began with two medals at the Western Canada Summer Games at Wood Buffalo, AB will end with a well-deserved Caribbean vacation.

Oh, did we mention that Kong Monday qualified for the CP Women’s Open LPGA stop at the Vancouver Golf Club and played the first two rounds, shooting a (+9) score of 153 after rounds of 76 and 77?

“It was tiring, but I had a lot of fun,” said the David Thompson Secondary student who earned one of four spots into the tournament with an even-par 72 at Pitt Meadows Golf Course on Monday.

Not even 24 hours after competing in the British Columbia Juvenile Boys and Girls Championships at Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club in Vernon, Roy Kang and Phoebe Yue were at the Vancouver Golf Club, cheering for their heroes playing the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open.

Kang was hanging around the putting green and ecstatic that he got a picture with Lydia Ko, while Yue was headed toward the first tee, where Ko, Angela Stanford and Michelle Wie were about to start their second round.

Look even further afield and in the scoring tent by the 9th green is British Columbia Golf President David Atkinson, who had a pivotal job of making sure the players were taking due care and attention in signing their official cards.

VERNON (August 20) - Courtenay’s Abigail Rigsby shot a new course record (-6) 65 at Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club on Thursday to win the BC Juvenile Girls Championship by three strokes over Surrey’s Hannah Lee.

Rigsby had a spotless card, with six birdies, including a downhill 20-footer on her last hole that saw her better the previous course record, a (-4) 67 shot by Mary-Ann Hayward at the 2013 Canadian Senior Women’s Championship.

“I just found out at the scoring tent that I had set the new course record,” said Rigsby, who was playing her final tournament of the season and final BC Juvenile.

VERNON (August 20) - AJ Ewart of Coquitlam shot his third consecutive under-par round and took home the BC Juvenile Boys Championship by six strokes over runner-up Keaton Gudz.

Ewart shot rounds of 70, 66 and 69 to finish at (-8) 205. Gudz shot a final round 73 to finish at (-2) 211, while Andrew Spalti and Tristan Mandur finished T3 at (-1) 212.

For Ewart, it’s the biggest British Columbia Golf title he’s won since winning the 2012 BC Bantam Boys title. “I’ve been so close so many times so to finally win, I’m pretty happy right now,” said Ewart. “It’s pretty surreal.”
