OLIVER, BC (July 16) – Jared du Toit rained down four birdies in his last five holes at Fairview Mountain Thursday afternoon to take a commanding four-stroke lead into the final round of the BC Amateur Championship.

SAN DIEGO, California (CJGA) — This week from July 14 - 17th, Canada’s top young aspiring golfers are competing in the prestigious IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships on nine golf courses around the San Diego area. This year, Canada will once again be well represented with 51 outstanding junior golfers.

CN and Golf Canada announced the continuation of CN’s school adoption program this year in Kamloops as an extension of their dedication to junior golf through the CN Future Links Community Tour.

Close to 50 students from both Sk’elep School of Excellence and Pinantan Lake Elementary celebrated with a CN Future Links Field Trip event at Mount Paul Golf Course in honour of CN’s recent adoption of 15 local schools in the Kamloops region. Students received lessons in safety, putting, driving and chipping from Head Professional, Danny Latten.

OLIVER, BC (July 15) - Point Grey Golf & Country Club’s Stu Macdonald made an eagle on his final shot of the day en route to a (-6) round of 66 that has him leading the 113th BC Amateur at Fairview Mountain with a (-9) 135 score.

Macdonald overhauled first-round co-leader Jared du Toit, who had a second consecutive day of (-4) 68 to sit at (-8) 136. Macdonald had 115 yards to go on the par-4 9th and hit his 54-degree wedge shot to 5 feet and then watched it roll into the cup for a closing eagle.

The first round of the 113th BC Amateur Championship at Fairview Mountain is in the books and while three players, Jared du Toit, Ian Kim and Conner Kozak share the lead at (-4) 68, there’s six players within one stroke and 17 players who shot under par.

With three rounds still to go in the 72-hole stroke play tournament, it’s still anybody’s tournament to win.

They’re two Alberta teenage golfers with very bright futures. Patrick Murphy and AJ Armstrong, both members of Team Canada’s Development Squad, are playing in Oliver this week as they try to add the prestigious British Columbia Amateur title to their already impressive resumes.

Two years ago, when Jared du Toit was graduating from Selkirk Secondary, he didn’t have many options for his post-secondary golf career.

It was a stroke of good luck that John Means at Idaho saw something in du Toit and got two solid seasons out of his leader. Not only did du Toit lead the Vandals in scoring (69.61), he won three times in his sophomore season.

Means also told du Toit he was in the top two or three players he’s ever coached and not only did Means mean that, he knew that it might be time to let du Toit spread his wings.

And those wings will take du Toit to Tempe, AZ this August, where he’s transferring from Idaho to Arizona State for his junior season.

The 17-year-old Surrey native won her second straight British Columbia Golf event with an overpowering final day at Cordova Bay Golf Course. On a day when Zaahidali (Ziggy) Nathu extended his lead to five strokes after 54 holes of the British Columbia Junior Boys' Championship Presented by Canadian Direct Insurance, it was Jake Scarrow who wrote the best story at the Park Meadows Course at the Osoyoos Golf Club.

Scarrow’s bogey-free round of (-9) 63 included nine birdies and no bogeys, as the incoming University of Idaho freshman broke the previous course record of (-8) 64 set by Justin Wurz on April 24, 2010.

When 52 of the best young female golfers in the province teed off Tuesday morning at Cordova Bay Golf Course for the opening round of the British Columbia Junior Girls Championship, they were joined at the first tee by the first winner of that title.

Shirley Nasheim won the 1952 title, beating her good friend and Hall of Famer Dorothy Wilks (Herbertson) with a final score of 86. While Dorothy would win the next two years, Shirley will always be able to say she was the first winner of the BC Junior Girls Championship.

Seventeen-year-old Zaahidali (Ziggy) Nathu had the round of his life Wednesday at the Park Meadows Course at the Osoyoos Golf Club, as he carded a (-7) round of 65 to take the lead halfway through the British Columbia Junior Boys' Championship Presented by Canadian Direct Insurance.

Nathu had eight birdies and only one bogey, setting a mark no other golfer could match. Nathu sits at (-9) 135 after two straight under-par rounds in Osoyoos.

Pressure doesn’t seem to faze 12-year-old Akari Hayashi.

One day after shooting a (-1) round of 72 at Cordova Bay, Hayashi went another stroke better, shooting a second round (-2) 71 to put herself in the lead by four strokes at the British Columbia Junior Girls Championship at Cordova Bay.

The only thing hotter than the steaming sun at the Osoyoos Golf Club Tuesday was Nanaimo golfer John MacDonald.

The 17-year-old shot a (-3) round of 69 at the Park Meadows Course for a one-shot lead after Round 1 in the British Columbia Junior Boys' Championship Presented by Canadian Direct Insurance.

MacDonald leads a foursome of golfers only one shot back: Patrick Tan of Marine Drive and Ole Hatlelid of Beach Grove, who each shot their (-2) rounds in the morning; and Ziggy Nathu of Quilchena and Jackson Thornley of Marine Drive, who shot their 70s in the afternoon flight of golfers.

It’s no surprise that reigning British Columbia Women’s Amateur Champion Michelle Kim of Surrey shot the low score of (-4) 69 during the opening round of the British Columbia Golf Junior Girls Championship at Cordova Bay Golf Course on Tuesday.

But the biggest surprise came from one of the smallest and youngest players in the field. Twelve-year-old Akari Hayashi of Uplands Golf Club was the only other player in the 52-golfer field to break par, as her 1-under par round of 72 included a front nine of four birdies and only one bogey.
