It was home, sweet home for Mill Bay's Tristan Mandur as he calmly rolled in a 5-foot par putt on the 72nd hole at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club, his home course, for a one-shot victory over Coquitlam's A.J. Ewart in the 2016 British Columbia Junior Boys Championship.

"it feels incredible, I mean, to win it on my home soil it means even more. I've worked really hard this year and it feels good for it to pay off, " said Mandur following the trophy presentation.

Jisoo Keel didn’t save her best for last, but she really didn’t need it. The 20-year-old former Coquitlam resident began Friday’s final round of the B.C. Women’s Amateur Championship at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen six shots ahead of the field. When the day ended, nothing had changed and Keel was hoisting the AC Flummerfelt Cup.

Keel closed with a one-over 73 -- her highest round of the week -- to finish the 72-hole event at eight-under par. Delta’s Mary Parsons, who also shot 73 on Friday, was second at two-under.

The third and penultimate round of a golf tournament is often referred to as "moving day" in many golf circles as players attempt to put themselves in a good position to contend going into the final round and of course, hopefully, win.

Thursday's round 3 at the 2016 BC Junior Boys Championship took on more of a "try-desperately-to-hang-on-to-what-you've-already-got-and-don't-fall-off-the-map day" as players searched for answers to the thick rough and the tricky greens at the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club, host of this year's championship in Cobble Hill.

To that end, it would appear that Pitt Meadows' Isaac Lee, who plays out of Swan-e-set Bay Resort, seems to have the best recipe for success so far, which would be to simply shoot par. After his 3rd consecutive round of even par 70 Lee finds himself in the final group on Friday with 3rd round leader A.J. Ewart and host club member Tristan Mandur.

Somewhat quietly playing his way into the final group, Mandur also carded an even par 70, which included three birdies to go along with three bogies. Mandur sits at 1-over for the tournament.

Nicole Bird jokes that she is looking for the next Graham DeLaet. That would be the female version, of course. Bird is one of a handful of U.S. college golf coaches who have spent the week in Tsawwassen assessing the talent at the B.C. Women’s Amateur Championship at Beach Grove Golf Club.

Bird is heading into her 10th season as women’s golf coach at Boise State University, where DeLaet played his collegiate golf before becoming one of Canada’s top pros. “Besides Graham, we have had a few other Canadian men as well, so I am trying to kind of break into that a little bit,” Bird said.

Many of the young women competing at Beach Grove this week have already committed to a U.S. school. “But there are probably eight or 10 others who haven’t,” Bird said.

A funny thing happened when Jisoo Keel accepted a golf scholarship from Stanford University. She discovered there was more to life than golf. 

The now 20-year-old Coquitlam resident, who graduated from Gleneagle secondary and enjoyed a stellar junior career, headed south three nearly three years ago to chase her LPGA Tour dreams.

But lately, golf has taken a back seat to Keel’s educational ambitions. “I haven’t played much competitive golf the past two years,” Keel said Wednesday. “I have been more focused on school. I really want to make the most out of my Stanford education. I am heading into my senior year and hopefully I will be starting my Masters degree the following year.”

What a difference a day makes. Round two of the BC Junior Boys Championship at Arbutus Ridge Golf Course in Cobble Hill was played under beautiful blue, calm, sunny skies following an overcast, damp, windy and mostly cool opening round.

The change in the weather obviously agreed with many of the young guns in the field for the 71st edition of this championship as evidenced by some of the big turnaround scores posted.

The reversal of fortune was led by 2015 BC Juvenile Boys Champion A.J. Ewart who fashioned a bogey-free round of 6-under 64 to jump into the lead at the halfway point sitting at 3-under (137).

Michelle Kim seems determined to keep the A.C. Flummerfelt Cup in the family. Two years ago, Michelle’s older sister, Taylor, hoisted that historic trophy as winner of the B.C. Women’s Amateur Championship. Last year, Michelle beat Taylor by one shot to take home the title.

On Tuesday, Michelle Kim served notice she is intent on repeating as champion. The soon-to-be 19-year-old from Surrey fired a three-under 69 at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen to grab the first-round lead of the Women’s Amateur.

On an overcast, cool day that tested the best male Junior golfers in British Columbia it was Cameron Bourque's steady play in recording a 3-under 67 that staked him to a one shot lead over Parksville's Aidan Goodfellow and Vancouver's Andrew Spalti after the first round of the BC Junior Boys Championship being held at Arbutus Ridge GC in Cobble Hill.

Bourque, a member of Uplands GC in Victoria carded four birdies against just one bogey en route to posting his score from the morning groups and watched it hold on throughout the rest of the day. Notably, he birdied both of the par 3's on the back nine including the difficlut island green 17th that caused fits for many of the players throughout the day.

The day began with the opening ceremony in the Musqueam Centre gymnasium. Young girls dressed in traditional Musqueam clothing entered the room singing hymns passed down from their elders. 

The display reminded those in attendance of the importance of National Aboriginal Day, and what it means to Musqueam Nation. As the opening ceremony concluded, the block party ensued. Music, and barbecue filled the surrounding area with the sounds and smells of a block party celebration.

KELOWNA -- Holly Horwood came to Kelowna Golf & Country Club looking for her second B.C. Women’s Super-Senior Championship. She got that and something even better. The Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club member also claimed her third B.C. Senior Women’s title, coming from behind to beat five-time champion Jackie Little of Port Alberni in Thursday’s final round.

At age 64, Horwood didn’t see another seniors title in her future. That category is open to players 50 and over. Horwood had her sights set on the super-senior category, which is for players 60 and over.

KELOWNA -- Jackie Little collected five B.C. Women’s Amateur titles and hoped to match that total when she began the senior phase of her golfing life. Little accomplished that goal last summer and the Hall of Famer from Port Alberni is now in a position to go one better.

Little fired a one-over 73 in Wednesday’s second round of the B.C. Senior Women’s Championship at Kelowna Golf & Country Club and with a 36-hole total of six-over 150 carries a one-shot lead over Vancouver’s Holly Horwood into Thursday’s final round. Win No. 6 -- which would be her third straight -- is in her sights.

The Richmond Olympic Oval was the host for International Olympic Day, which saw more than 2,000 elementary school students from the Lower Mainland attend. The goal for International Olympic Day is to promote the Olympic values and participation in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender, or athletic ability.

With 13 sports represented, International Olympic Day provided students with the opportunity to realize the skills required to play sports across the sporting landscape. At our British Columbia Golf station the skills of ball striking and rolling were on full display.

KELOWNA -- Many of her non-golfing friends couldn’t understand why Sandra Turbide was so happy about turning 50. “When I turned 50 I was so excited and people were like, are you crazy?” Turbide said with a laugh Tuesday. “I said you guys don’t play golf.”

Maybe now her friends will understand after Turbide shot a three-over 75 in the first round of the B.C. Senior Women’s Championship at Kelowna Golf & Country Club. That left the Maple Ridge resident one shot behind first-round leader Penny Baziuk of Sidney.

Beautiful British Columbia? You’ll get no argument from Dan McCarthy. The 30-year-old pro from Syracuse, N.Y. won for the second time in three weeks Sunday, capturing the inaugural GolfBC Championship at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf & Country Club in Kelowna.

McCarthy, who closed with a seven-under 64, finished the $175,000 Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada event at 25-under par. That was seven shots better than runner-up Ryan Williams of Vancouver.
