• Wyatt Brook Faces Deep Field In His B.C. Mid-Amateur Championship Title Defence

By Brad Ziemer, British Columbia Golf

(May 29, 2025) - Wyatt Brook always knew that defending his B.C. Mid-Amateur title was not going to be easy and a recent look at the field for this year’s championship only served to reinforce that belief.

‘It’s a stacked field,” Brook said of the players who will be on hand June 3-5 at Highland Pacific Golf Club in Victoria for the first event of the 2025 British Columbia Golf championship season.

“I know for a fact looking at that field that you are going to have to put it together for three days to have a chance to win that one,” Brook said in an interview.

(May 26, 2025) - The southern swing of the PGA Tour Americas circuit wrapped up in Bogota, Colombia, where Coquitlam’s A.J. Ewart capped a run of solid golf with a tie-for-third finish.

Ewart was pleased with that result but also proud of one other fact about his golf journey through South and Central America. He played in all six events, made all six cuts and did not shoot a single round over par.

“Someone told me that and I didn’t believe them so I went back and checked,” Ewart said over the phone from Bogota. “I shot even a couple of times, but every other round was under par.”

Peter Sorokovsky will never forget his first day on the job as superintendent of Golf Burnaby’s four-course portfolio.

Sorokovsky had been hired after spending several years as assistant superintendent at Northview Golf Club in Surrey, where he had learned some things while helping oversee a massive slit drainage project. It didn’t take him long to realize that he was going to have to put that knowledge to work in a big way in Burnaby.

“I distinctly remember my first day of work with Golf Burnaby and I still have a picture I took that day of the foreman standing in the middle of the 10th fairway at Riverway in late January of 2007 and he has his rubber boots on and he is at least ankle-deep in muddy water and the grass is six inches long,” Sorokovsky says. “And I’m like, oh, no, what did I just step into.”

Turns out he had stepped into a great opportunity. Thanks to support from management at Golf Burnaby and the City of Burnaby, Sorokovsky and his staff were allowed to do the work necessary to turn Riverway into what it was intended to be: the crown jewel of Burnaby’s golf collection and one of the top municipal courses in the country.

The course, which has been shuttered for the better part of two years, is reopening on April 18, and general manager Tracy Evans hopes British Columbia golfers will put aside all the tariff talk and fall back in love with the course.

(March 31st, 2025) - Ledgeview Golf Club, the Abbotsford layout that helped produce the likes of PGA TOUR winners Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin and NCAA champion James Lepp, has received a Golf Canada award for its commitment to junior golf.

And that makes Ledgeview general manager Brad Clapp especially proud. So does the view from the club’s pro shop.

“As I look outside now, we have a couple of five-year-olds rolling a ball towards the hole learning what a break looks like,” Clapp, a former PGA Tour Canada winner, says in an interview.

(March 24, 2025) - It was a one-under 71, which under normal circumstances would not get Lauren Kim overly excited. She can shoot that type of round in her sleep. But this one was different. It came in difficult conditions with the wind howling in the final round of her team’s home event at the University of Texas Golf Club.

That round — one bogey, two birdies and 15 pars — turned out to be the only sub-par round of the day at the Betsy Rawls Invitational and propelled the Surrey native to her second collegiate victory. “We were getting gusts of up to 35 miles per hour, so it wasn’t easy out there,” Kim said in an interview.

  • BC Golf Excited To Re-Launch The Very Popular Majors Golf Challenge For 2025

Lasy year British Columbia Golf provided our members a 'free-to-enter' contest that not only offered bragging rights for the winners but some very nice prizes as well.

Hey, we're all for 'friendly' rivalries in the name of sport and good fun. And it's fun to win once in a while too.

For 2025 we are going to run the Majors Challenge for each of the four men's Major Championships - The Masters, The PGA Championship, The U.S. Open, The Open Championship as well as the RBC Canadian Men's Open and the CPKC Women's Canadian Open.

(March 17, 2025) - Their team nickname is the Heat and the University of B.C.-Okanagan women’s golf team are certainly bringing just that as they get their spring season underway.

For the second straight week, a UBC-Okanagan golfer took home an individual title at a Las Vegas-area tournament. Second-year player Julia Alexander Carew won the Vegas Warrior Invitational this past weekend at Wildhorse Golf Course.

Her win followed last week’s victory by the Heat’s Emily Cornwall, who captured the RMC Intercollegiate at Lake Las Vegas played at Reflection Bay Golf Course.

Those two events were the spring-season openers for the Heat and Alexander Carew is excited that the team was able to find some early success.

  • Ziemer's B.C. Golf Notes: Point Roberts counting on Canadians as it prepares to reopen golf course

Other Notes: UBC sweeps RMC Intercollegiate in Nevada; Lauren Kim close again in South Carolina; Muncie Booth, Jack McDonald honoured by Golf Canada

By Brad Ziemer, British Columbia Golf

(March 10, 2025) - When we re-open it, will they come? That’s the question owners and staff of Bald Eagle Golf Course in Point Roberts are asking themselves.

General manager Tracy Evans has confirmed the course will indeed re-open this spring. An initial target date of April 1 likely will not be met, but the hope is shortly thereafter the highly regarded layout will be back open for business.

And if the course is to remain open, it must attract British Columbians, who in the past have accounted for 90 per cent of its play. Evans knows the current political climate is not great and many Canadians are vowing not to cross the border. “It’s a concern,” says Evans, a Whatcom County realtor who doubles as GM of the course.

“Point Roberts is definitely being impacted by it already. People are just not crossing the border to come down for gas and other things. The businesses down here are feeling it already.”
