    [ACTON, ONT.]—The PGA Championship of Canada sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf begins next week at one of the country’s most beautiful golf settings.

    Sixty-four of the PGA of Canada’s best players tee it up June 13-16 at Victoria Golf Club in Victoria, all vying for the association’s most prestigious championship and historic P.D. Ross trophy.

    This Summer’s B.C. Amateur Championship At Pheasant Glen Has Special Meaning For The 13-Time Winner

    It was the summer of 1967. Lester B. Pearson was prime minister, Canada was celebrating its centennial and a shy 15-year-old named Doug Roxburgh was playing in his first B.C. Amateur Championship. A half-century later, Roxburgh is still playing in the tournament he has won a record 13 times. 

    This summer’s 114th playing of the B.C. Amateur at Pheasant Glen Golf Course in Qualicum will be an especially meaningful one for Roxburgh, who will tee it up for the 50th time. Roxburgh hasn’t missed one since playing in his first B.C. Amateur way back in 1967 at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.

    CN Future Links is Canada’s junior golf program allowing kids from the ages of 6 – 18 the opportunity to learn and play the game of golf through affordable and accessible programs. Eaglequest at Coyote Creek were proud to host their first ever CN Future Links Jr. Skills Challenge over the June 4-5th weekend.

    The organizers and volunteers were pleased to have very positive feedback from the parents and kids alike, saying, “They really enjoyed the whole experience, and think it really motivates more young kids to get into golf and I think more of these events are going to be great for us in BC.”

  • PNGA Senior & Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championships Being Held At Big Sky Golf Club

    The 52nd Pacific Northwest Senior Men’s Amateur Championship and 7th Pacific Northwest Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship are being held June 7-9 at Big Sky Golf Club in Pemberton, B.C.

    The two championships are being held concurrently, and are conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA). The Senior Men’s Amateur includes men 55 years of age or older while the Super Senior Men’s Amateur includes men age 65 years or older.

    Three Other British Columbians Finish In The Top 10

    Adam Cornelson could be a poster child for perseverance. The Langley native has absorbed plenty of punches as he chased his professional golf dream the last few years.

    Just last month Cornelson had to pull himself off the canvas and fight for survival on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit. He passed that test of nerves at qualifying school at Crown Isle in Courtenay and on Sunday finally delivered a knockout punch of his own.

    The inaugural GolfBC Championship will have the usual 156-player field when it begins Thursday at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf & Country Club in Kelowna.

    Actually, there will be one notable difference. When the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada makes its Okanagan debut, 155 men and one woman will be teeing it up.

    Jacqueline Bendrick, a 20-year-old collegiate player from Mercer Island, Wash., has been granted a sponsor’s exemption into the $175,000 event. She will be the first woman to play in a Mackenzie Tour event since the PGA TOUR began running what was formerly the Canadian Tour back in 2013.

    PARKSVILLE -- The University of B.C. Thunderbirds ended their season in style Friday with a complete sweep of the Canadian University/College Championships at Morningstar Golf Course.

    The T-Birds won both the men’s and women’s team titles, while UBC senior Scott Secord claimed the men’s individual title and junior Kat Kennedy took home the women’s individual title.

    Nanoose Bay Resident Claims Both The B.C. Women’s Mid-Amateur And Mid-Master Titles At Nanaimo Golf Club

    NANAIMO -- Shelly Stouffer battled more than just her closest pursuers in Thursday’s final round of the B.C. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. She also battled the butterflies, which were in full flight as she walked the final few holes at Nanaimo Golf Club.

    Stouffer, a Nanoose Bay resident, overcame her nerves and held off Alison Murdoch of Victoria and Christina Proteau of Port Alberni to win the Mid-Amateur title by two shots.  “I am pretty happy,” Stouffer said. “I was able to hang in and win coming down the stretch. I was nervous, man.”

    NANAIMO -- In the end, Kevin Carrigan won by six shots, but it was more of a struggle than you might think. Carrigan, who had a nine-shot lead to start Thursday’s final round of the B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, saw his huge cushion slipping away after a disastrous beginning to his back nine.

    “It didn’t feel like I was going to win by six after I had made three consecutive bogeys and splashed one into the water,” the 29-year-old Victoria native said. “I was thinking that the wheels had fallen off and I didn’t know where they had gone.”

    NANAIMO -- Jordan Belton desperately wanted to defend his B.C. Mid-Amateur title this week at Nanaimo Golf Club, but the Surrey resident knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Not so much the golfing part, but getting there.

    Belton’s wife Courtney delivered their first child, a son named Bauer, just two weeks ago, and he knew that being away for a few days would be a tough sell. So Belton, with his wife’s blessing, decided he’d commute daily from their Surrey home to Nanaimo.

    Victoria Resident Carries Two-Shot Lead On Shelly Stouffer Of Nanoose Bay Into Thursday’s Final Round

    NANAIMO -- Her lead remains two shots, but Alison Murdoch wasn’t exactly feeling comfortable heading into Thursday’s final round of the B.C. Women’s Mid-Amateur and Mid-Master Championships.

    Murdoch fired a four-over 76 Wednesday at Nanaimo Golf Club and her two-round total of 154 has the Victoria Golf Club member two shots in front of Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay and three up on Christina Proteau of Port Alberni. Those three players will play together in the final group on Thursday.

    Surrey’s Taylor Kim and Sue Kim of Langley have qualified for next month’s U.S. Women’s Open.

    Taylor Kim, 21, was the medalist at a sectional qualifier Tuesday at Green Valley Golf CLub in Fairfield, Calif. She shot two rounds of 71 to finish one shot ahead of runner-up Julie Yang of Stillwater, Okla.

    Golf clubs, retail locations, and golf facilities across the country and around the world are participating in Women's Golf Day on June 7th to engage and encourage women and girls to play golf.

    Victoria, B.C. - Dana Christianson of Tacoma, Wash. outlasted Brooks Lancaster of Kaleden, B.C. in the final match to win the 41st Pacific Northwest Master-40 Amateur Championship, held last week on the Mountain course at Bear Mountain Resort in Victoria, B.C.

    The championship, which was conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA), consisted of the top male amateur golfers in the Pacific Northwest over the age of 40.

    Ryan Williams couldn’t quite catch the leaders, but he still earned himself a nice bonus Sunday at Point Grey Golf & Country Club.

    Williams closed with a three-under 69 in the final round of the $175,000 Freedom 55 Financial Open and his 72-hole total of 10-under par made him the low Canadian in the season-opening event of the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Canada circuit.

    The low Canadian each week earns a $2,500 bonus from Freedom 55 and the Canadian player of the year will be awarded $25,000 at the end of the season.

    The UBC Thunderbirds saw a seven-shot lead quickly evaporate in Friday’s final round and had to settle for second place at the NAIA Men’s Golf Championships in Silvis, Ill.

    The T-Birds had their worst round of the 72-hole event on Friday, when they shot a team score of 301 or 17-over par at the TPC at Deere Run.

    They finished the event eight strokes behind the winning team from Oklahoma City University.

    A.J. Ewart knows his time at Point Grey Golf & Country Club this week is all about experience and trying to soak up whatever he can on the biggest stage of his young golfing life.

    But the 17-year-old Coquitlam resident, last year’s B.C. Juvenile Boys champion, is also hoping to make a few birdies. He made only one in Thursday’s first round of the Freedom 55 Financial Classic, the season-opening event on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit.

    A few wayward drives cost Ewart as he opened with a four-over 76, but he wasn’t going to let that sour him on what he recognizes is a great opportunity.
