It was just before noon and the World’s No. 1 golfer, Rory McIlroy, hit the driving range for his final warm-up before the Father’s Day round of the U.S. Open.

McIlroy was sitting at (+4) for the tournament and he needed a big day to at least force the contenders 8 shots ahead of him to think about him if he were to post a low number.

McIlroy had a great practice session, shooting a final round 66 that could have been much better if he had scored on any of the four final holes. But it was his practice session that had IG editor Bryan Outram and myself intrigued.

When we last saw Matt Palsenbarg, Golf LAB at Northview Golf & Country Club co-owner, he had spent two action-packed days teaching some of the best British Columbia juniors high-performance golf techniques.

He started this week on Monday, giving a presentation on those high-performance techniques to PGA of BC professionals at the Vancouver Golf Club.

He had just enough time to get home to spend some time scootering with his daughter when he found out that another of his charges, Victoria’s Cory Renfrew, had Monday qualified for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

(December 9, 2024) - The second stage of PGA TOUR Q-school wrapped up last week and its long list of casualties included British Columbians Stuart Macdonald of Vancouver, Chris Crisologo of Richmond and A.J. Ewart of Coquitlam.

For them and so many others, PGA TOUR regular Joel Dahmen had some words of encouragement he posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “For every player who didn’t get thru 2nd stage this year, keep your head up,” Dahmen said in his post. “I never got through myself. Keep believing.”

Vancouver, B.C.'s Stuart Macdonald is looking to earn Mackenzie Tour status this week a Q-School. The member of Golf Canada's National Amateur Team plays out of Point Grey Golf and Country Club, host of the Freedom 55 Financial Championship, and recently finished his collegiate career at Purdue University.

MacDonald plans on competing as an amateur into this summer, but has eyes on his next steps and professional future this week in California.

The Canadian Pacific Women’s Open has become another COVID-19 sports casualty and will not be played late this summer at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver. 

Golf Canada made the announcement Tuesday. With the Canada-U.S. border remaining closed and strict self-quarantine restrictions in place, it simply was not feasible to play the event, which was scheduled for Sept. 3-6. There was some good news for Shaughnessy and Metro Vancouver golf fans, however, as the Southwest Marine Drive layout will play host to the event in 2021.

January 2, 2025 (KAPALUA, HAWAII)  -  Taking advantage of sunny skies and light winds, Adam Hadwin rocketed to the top of the leaderboard in early action at the Sentry Tournament of Champions with a 6-under 67 on the par 73 layout. But while his standing didn’t last through the day, he still ended up tied for seventh. Thing is, he noted there’s a long way to go.

Abbotsford, BC's Hadwin is one of four Canadians in this year‘s event. He started quickly, plateaued a bit in the middle of his round, then finished strong.

The Vancouver Open was born back in 2007, when Phil Jonas won what was then a two-day event held at University Golf Club. Fifteen years later, the Vancouver Golf Tour’s flagship event has produced a rich history that will be added to this weekend when it is played at the three City of Vancouver municipal courses.

A record field of 312 players will compete Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Fraserview, McCleery and Langara. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years,” says VGT commissioner Fraser Mulholland. “It has gone by way faster than expected.”

What a Sunday for the books! Our very own Canadian, Nick Taylor, waves the red and white high and proud, clinching the 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open in a heart-stopping playoff against Charley Hoffman. Taylor's putter was nothing short of magical, a testament to perseverance and precision under pressure.

Parallel to our golfing triumph, the red and white Kansas City Chiefs staged a comeback reminiscent of a Hollywood script in the Super Bowl, turning a game of "butterfingers" into a victory dance in overtime against the 49ers. It's a red and white double-header that'll be etched in the annals of sports history.

American Lee McCoy Wins Season-Opening Event On Mackenzie Tour By 8 Shots At Point Grey

It wasn’t a banner weekend for Canadians at the Freedom 55 Financial Open, but at least one of them was smiling when the season-opening event of the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit concluded Sunday at Point Grey Golf & Country Club.

And he didn’t even cash a cheque.

Richmond amateur Chris Crisologo, teeing it up in his first pro event on a sponsor’s exemption, played like a seasoned veteran at Point Grey. The 21-year-old rising star of Simon Fraser University’s golf team closed with a two-under 70 Sunday to finish the 72-hole event at seven-under par.

Three years after he should have won the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Rickie Fowler seems to be on the precipice of making his dream come true. A remarkable round of (-7) 64, which featured eight birdies and just one lone bogey has Fowler four strokes clear of Matt Kuchar and five clear of roommate Justin Thomas.

In 2016, Fowler was leading by two with just holes to play, but after driving it into the water behind the 17th hole, he was forced into a four-hole playoff, which he eventually lost to Hideki Matsuyama.

This year, on a sun-splashed Saturday where the usual thousands of Phoenix golf fans come out in droves, it was Fowler who set the torrid pace, with birdies on four of his first six holes to open up a five-shot margin. The lead would yo-yo back to as little as three, but Fowler really put his stamp on the round by making his final birdie on the par-4 17th.

Rickie Fowler finally has the tournament win he craves.

The Murrieta, CA native had come so achingly close to winning the 2016 Waste Management Open but after going into the water at 17 with a two-stroke lead, he lost in a four-hole playoff to Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama. Fowler cried anguished tears in the press conference afterwards because he had wanted to win so badly in front of his grandfather.

Disappointment the following two years were best summarized by a conversation he had with a local police officer upon leaving last year’s tournament.

As the officer consoled him and bid him goodbye until next year, Fowler said: “I just want to win this so bad.”

(March 21, 2019) OAKVILLE, ON (Golf Canada) – Today, RBC and Golf Canada announced that world ranked No. 4 – Rory McIlroy – will compete in the 2019 RBC Canadian Open, June 3-9 at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

Fresh off an impressive victory at the 2019 PLAYERS Championship, McIlroy joins an already strong field of players, including world No. 1 and Team RBC Ambassador Dustin Johnson, alongside team members Jim Furyk, Adam Hadwin, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker.

BC's David Rose and Alberta's Jamie Sadlowski have secured early season playing status for the Mackenzie PGA Tour Canada campaign.

At the 2018 Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada West #2 qualifier held at the Wigwam Resort’s Gold Course, West Vancouver's David Rose finished 4th (68-71-71-72 – 282 (-6)) and will be exempt for first eight events and subject to second re-shuffle.

Jamie Sadlowski (St. Paul, AB), the two-time World Long Drive champion, finished T9 and will be exempt for the Tour's first four stops. His Q-School experience was a bit of a roller coaster. He opened with a 3-over-par 75, followed with a 5-under-par 67 and then posted another 3-over-par 75. However, he closed out the event with another 5-under-par 67 on Friday under sunny and very warm temps with highs in the low-90s and light winds.

With the conclusion of the third of five Mackenzie Tour Q-Schools, two more remain on the schedule. The fourth will be staged at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland, FL from April 24-27 followed by the fifth at Crown Isle Resort Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, BC from May 1-4. The season kicks off May 31-June 3 with the Freedom 55 Financial Open at the Point Grey Golf and Country Club in Vancouver.
