SEATTLE - The U.S. Open at Chambers Bay is just over three months away and preparations are going along swimmingly.

Larry Gilhuly could not be more clear: The U.S. Open will be played at Chambers Bay in Tacoma, Washington this June.

Golf Channel recently announced a new reality competition series, Altered Course, that combines golf, speed, fitness, teamwork and decision-making as teams navigate re-imagined and extreme golf holes in excess of 700 yards, traversing the natural obstacles and challenging terrain as fast as possible.

Altered Course’s inaugural season will take place in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Slow play won’t be an issue on this fast-paced series that features two-person teams competing on extraordinary hole layouts exceeding 700 yards -- while racing against time.

For just the second time in program history, the University of B.C. men’s golf team has captured the NAIA national championship. The T-Birds surprised even their coach by winning the 72-hole tournament at Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.

“To be honest it’s a big surprise and it’s a big upset,” said longtime UBC coach Chris Macdonald. “We were the 12th-ranked team coming in, so a lot of things had to go right.”

The UBC Thunderbirds men's golf team finished in a tie for second at the Association of Independent Institutions conference championship, Tuesday, April 28, in Victoria, Texas.

After two rounds of 4-over par 292 on Monday, the Thunderbirds recorded a final-round score of 7-over 295 to finish at 15-over 879. California State University-San Marcos won the tournament by three strokes over UBC and Ashford University, which led the event by three going into the final round at the Victoria Country Club.

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The UBC Thunderbirds finished in a tie for eighth at the 64th NAIA Men's Golf National Championship, which concluded Friday in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The team recorded a 3-over par 291 to finish at 19-over 1191 (295-297-288-291). UBC – which teed off from the tenth hole – moved up two spots with its performance on Friday on the par-72, 6,947-yard Hills Course at LPGA International.

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men's golf team began the 2015-16 season on a winning note, claiming first place at the Saint Martin's University Men's Invitational, which ended Saturday in Olympia, Wash.

The Thunderbirds recorded a three-round score of 4-over par 856 (287-276-293), six shots ahead of Simon Fraser and 10 ahead of Dixie State (Utah) while the University of Victoria Vikes finished in 4th spot.

The day did not start quite the way Avril Li or Kate Johnston had hoped, but it sure ended well. Li and Johnston, the No. 1 and 2 players for the UBC Women’s Golf Team, both double-bogeyed the opening hole in Friday’s final round of the NAIA National Championship tourney at Lincoln Park Golf Club in Oklahoma City.

Johnston followed up with a bogey on the second hole and you could almost see UBC’s slim lead slipping away. But UBC’s two top guns recovered beautifully and led the Thunderbirds to a five-shot win over Keiser University of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

For a while, it looked like it might be close. Turns out, it wasn’t. The University of B.C. women’s golf team rebounded nicely after a second-round hiccup and repeated as NAIA champions with a resounding 29-stroke victory at the TPC Deere Run in Silvas, Ill.

The Thunderbirds did what they were expected to do, which often isn’t as easy as it sounds. They entered the tournament ranked No. 1, but after a poor second round trailed Keiser University by one shot.

These ’Birds can’t be beat. The UBC Thunderbirds women’s golf team added another chapter to its storybook season by winning the NAIA Championship in Oklahoma City.

The UBC team of Grace Bell, Elizabeth Labbé, Sonja Tang, Emily Li and Shania Remandaban led from start to finish en route to the national championship. UBC is a perfect 11-0 in tournament play this season.

VANCOUVER -- The UBC Thunderbirds women's golf team won its sixth straight Association of Independent Institutions Conference Championship April at The Club at Colony Creek in Victoria, Texas.

With the victory the Thunderbirds earn an automatic berth into the 2015 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship May 12-15 at the Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Ga.

BURNABY, B.C. (September 25, 2024) - A super summer for Julia Alexander-Carew looks like it’s going to be followed by a fabulous fall. The UBC-Okanagan sophomore won her second tournament in three days as she captured the individual title at the True North Classic at Riverway Golf Course in Burnaby. The 54-hole NCAA Division II event was hosted by Simon Fraser University.

The 19-year-old Alexander-Carew finished the tournament at one-under par and won by five shots over UBC’s Grace Bell. It follows her win this past weekend at the Saint Martin’s University Grisham Memorial tourney in DuPont, Wash., which was her first NCAA victory. Now the Oakville, Ont. native has two.

It was a day later and Una Chou was still thinking about the putt that won her the individual women’s title at the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at the famed Stadium course at TPC Sawgrass.

“It still feels surreal,” said Chou, who is completing her third year as a member of the UBC Thunderbirds golf team. “I have been looking back at that putt I made on 18 and saying, ‘How did I make that putt?’ It was like a six-foot slider and I knew I needed to make it for the win. I just tried to trust my routine. I was thinking, 'if it goes in, great, if it doesn’t it’s fine.'”

It went in, of course, and Chou picked the ball out of the cup and looked up toward the heavens. “I just felt so relieved,” she said. “It was just like a big sigh of relief.”

At Health and Social Care Questions in the House of Commons, All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group Co-Chair, Craig Tracey MP, raised the benefits that golf delivers to participants, following research from the Golf and Health Project, supported by The R&A.

“As the Minister may be aware, I currently Co-Chair the All-Party Group on Golf, a sport sometimes unfairly labelled as a good walk spoiled.

“Would the Minister agree with me that there are many positive health benefits associated with participation in golf, especially for those people with long term conditions?”

The Minister responded “I certainly will, as somebody who used to work in the golf industry before coming to this place.

AUSTIN, Texas — Team golf, whether conducted on a televised global stage or in the cozy confines of the Fazio Foothills of Austin, Texas, is the sport’s minute-by-minute drama series.

The inaugural Women’s PGA Cup had its share of compelling vignettes  as a five-member United States team dug deep to hold off Canada and capture a sparkling silver trophy by four strokes, 671-675, at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa.

The 54-hole competition, the first international event for women PGA Professionals, opened with the U.S. owning a 10-stroke advantage only to see that cushion trimmed twice to four. The day closed on a sun-splashed tableau of rolling terrain with Canada and the U.S. dueling on the Foothills’ renowned final four holes.

Brian Youell Fins 2018 Leo Feser Award From GCSAA

Brian Youell, the golf course superintendent at Uplands Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, has been selected as the recipient of the 2018 Leo Feser Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).

Now in its 41st year, the award is presented annually to the author of the best superintendent-written article published in Golf Course Management, the association’s flagship publication, during the previous year.

Markham, Ont. (Golf Canada) –Team USA got out to an early lead and never let it go, finishing with a team-total score of 17-under par 559 for the wire-to-wire victory at the inaugural World Junior Girls Golf Championship at Angus Glen Golf Club (South Course) in Markham, Ont.

The Americans (137-141-137-144—559) began Wednesday’s final round with a commanding 16-shot lead and went on to shoot a team-total, even-par 144 to capture top spot on the medal podium.

FAR HILLS, N.J. (Nov. 19, 2015) – The United States Golf Association (USGA) and Fox Sports have announced the premiere of their film celebrating the 2015 U.S. Open Championship.

Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Jon Hamm, the one-hour film, 2015 U.S. Open: Spieth’s Northwest Conquest, will debut in the U.S. on Thursday, Nov. 26 on Fox (approximately 4 p.m. EST; check local listings) following the NFL game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions.

The film will be rebroadcast at 4:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, Nov. 29, on Fox Sports 1.

FAR HILLS, N.J., USA and ST ANDREWS, SCOTLAND (March 1, 2017) – The USGA and The R&A have unveiled a preview of proposed new Rules of Golf, as part of a joint initiative to modernize the Rules and make them easier to understand and apply.

The online release of this preview begins a six-month feedback and evaluation period during which all golfers worldwide can learn about the proposed changes and provide input before they are finalized in 2018 and take effect January 1, 2019.

With the worldwide survey and evaluation period now complete, the USGA and The R&A and their respective committees will continue to review all comments received with the goal of finalizing the new Rules next spring and beginning a comprehensive education program later in 2018.
