Hank Haney figures he knows a thing or two about golf instruction. “I feel like I am uniquely qualified,” Haney told a clinic at Morgan Creek Golf Course in Surrey this week. “I am really the only instructor who has taught arguably the greatest player in the history of the game in Tiger Woods and the worst player in the history of the game in Charles Barkley.”

That line drew lots of laughs from clinic participants -- mostly Vancouver-area club pros -- who had gathered at Morgan Creek to hear four of Callaway Golf’s heavy hitters talk golf.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Hannah O’Sullivan, 17, of Chandler, Ariz., won the 2015 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Portland Golf Club, earning a 3-and-2 victory over Sierra Brooks, 17, of Sorrento, Fla.

After trailing by three holes through 15, O’Sullivan steadily inched closer, cutting the deficit to 1 down at the 18-hole break, squaring the match through 23 holes, taking the lead on the 24th hole and making a 4-foot par putt on the 34th green to seal the victory.

A nasty curveball was Erik Hanson’s bread-and-butter pitch when he was striking out batters in the majors. As an amateur golfer, Hanson now prefers to pound the ball straight down the middle. When his pitching career ended back in the late 1990s, Hanson transitioned to golf. He will tell you that switch came easy and that pitching and golfing have a lot in common.

This year, the Chinese new year, also known as Chinese Lunar new year falls on Sunday, 22 January 2023.

According to the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese new year is always associated with the animals of the 12 zodiac signs. This year, Chinese New Year falls on Sunday, 22 January 2023 and the animal is rabbit. That is why the Chinese Lunar Year 2023 is the 'Year of Rabbit.'

Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2023 is the year of the Rabbit; 2022 the year of the Tiger.

On the 15th day of the first lunar month, two weeks after Chinese New Year, another important traditional Chinese festival, the Chinese Lantern Festival or Yuan Xiao Jie or Yuanxiao Festival (元宵节), is celebrated.

It marks the first full moon of the new lunar year and the end of the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) period. Chinese Lantern Festival 2023 will be celebrated on February 5th in 2023.

Dust off your pink, tiger-print jacket -- it's time to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Saying goodbye to the Ox, we enter the Year of the Tiger on February 1, 2022.

Though the pandemic continues to overshadow the occasion, with public festivities once again pared down or canceled in many cities, millions of families around the world will still be celebrating at home. 

Here's a quick guide to the most common Lunar New Year traditions and superstitions, as well as insights from some of Hong Kong's most established geomancers on what the Year of the Tiger might have in store.

As the Islamic calendar is based around the lunar cycle, the Holy month of Ramadan rotates by approximately ten days each year. This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on Thursday March 23rd, 2023, and end on Thursday April 20th, 2023, depending on the sighting of the moon.

Islamic holidays always begin at sundown and end at sundown the following day/days ending the holiday or festival.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a month of fasting, prayer, giving and self-evaluation observed by Muslims. The month lasts 29-30 days depending on the sightings of the crescent moon.

British Columbia Golf is pleased to recognize that Saturday, April 13th is the first day of the Vaisakhi month. We sincerely hope everyone is able to celebrate in a safe and happy manner. 

Vaisakhi (Punjabi: ਵਿਸਾਖੀ, IAST: visākhī), also known as Baisakhi, Vaishakhi, or Vasakhi is a historical and religious festival in Sikhism and Hinduism.... Vaisakhi marks the Sikh new year and commemorates the formation of Khalsa panth of warriors under Guru Gobind Singh in 1699.

"Vaisakhi presents an opportunity for me to reflect on my journey as a Sikh, and to reaffirm my commitment to the values of Sikhism," said Harman Singh, senior manager of education at The Sikh Coalition.

Traditionally, the Vaisakhi (also known as Baisakhi) festival is celebrated in Punjab and is especially important for the Sikh community as it marks the establishment of the Khalsa. More recently, this festival is also celebrated around the world by the Sikh diaspora. Vaisakhi is a harvest festival of Punjab, or according to the Punjabi calendar, it is the New Year for Punjabi people.

This day is also observed as the Thanksgiving day by the farmers whereby the farmers pay their tribute, thanking God for the abundant harvest and also praying for future prosperity.

Vaisakhi is one of the three festivals Guru Amar Das Ji chose to be celebrated by Sikhs.

Back in the spring, the Drew Charter men’s golf team from Atlanta won the Class A Public State Championship in golf, lapping their competition to take home the trophy.

Their win was especially notable for two reasons. First, they are the first Atlanta Public School to capture the state title. Second, they’re the first all-black team and coaching staff to earn top honors in the state of Georgia.

Now, a PGA Tour veteran who took notice of their triumph is jumping in to support their continued success. Harold Varner III tweeted to congratulate the team and call attention to their accomplishment. In addition, Varner announced a donation of US$5,000 to the school’s golf program.

Vancouver, BC - Golfers participating in the 42^nd Junior America's Cup were faced with sunny skies again at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club as they entered the third and final round of this year's tournament. The Shaughnessy course really challenged the players each day as they all battled to take home the title. Hawaii team members were able to read the greens and master the course to be declared champions and take home the title.

Victoria's Dale Jackson is in Rio as a golf rules official for the 2016 Olympic Games and is providing a daily blog on what he sees and experiences as Canada attempts to defend its Gold Medal from the 1904 Olympic Games the last time golf was a part of the quadrennial event. The men have finished their event out of the medals and now it's up to the ladies to defend Canada's title.

It was difficult to know who was more relieved, Brooke Henderson or the organizers of the CPKC Women’s Open.

Suffice to say everyone was delighted when Henderson, the face of this tournament, rebounded with a bogey-free four-under 68 in Friday’s second round and comfortably made the cut.

Henderson drives ticket sales at this event and her early departure would have left a huge void at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club.

Victoria Teen Holly Stewart Is Off To The University of Washington This Fall After Earning Prestigious Evans Scholarship

Holly Stewart was 12 years old when she began caddying at Victoria Golf Club and in those days it often felt like the bag she was carrying weighed as much as she did. 

On some days, particularly when the wind whipped off the water and swept across the oceanside layout, her ‘loop’ was something of a balancing act. “You’d arrive at the club and it’s like, oh, it’s a beautiful day, nice and sunny, and then you get out there and the wind is whipping all around you,” Stewart says.

“And as a tiny little 12 year-old I did not have good balance. I slid down hills a few times because I couldn’t stand up.”

Jake Olson was eight months old when doctors told his parents he had bilateral retinoblastoma, and they would need to remove his left eye.

For the next 12 years, Olson lived as normal a life as possible – playing golf and flag football – in between chemotherapy treatments as the cancer kept attacking his right eye.

At first, the chemo was introduced into his bloodstream and left him “sick as a dog,” Olson recalls. “It was pretty much poisoning your body to death, and you hoped that the cancer died before your body did.”

Canada Will Be Returning A Golf Squad In The 2020 Olympics In Tokyo - Image Used With Permission

OAKVILLE, Ont. – Wondering how Canada’s Olympic golf team will be selected? You’re not alone.

In 2016, golf made its historic return to the Olympic Games for the first time in 112 years, dating back to when Canadian George S. Lyon won gold for Canada at St. Louis 1904. A lot has happened since 2016 (new Rules of Golf and new PGA TOUR schedule just to name a few) and many golf fans have forgotten how Olympic qualifying works, which is why we’re writing this article.

The field for the 2020 Olympic golf competition will include 60 women and 60 men competing over 72 holes of stroke play in a men’s individual event (July 30-August 2) and a women’s individual event (August 5-8).

Playing golf from the appropriate set of tees is a great way to derive a lot more enjoyment from the game.

At the same time, how do we really know how to determine credibly what those tees should be for each of us?
