Victoria, B.C. - Dana Christianson of Tacoma, Wash. outlasted Brooks Lancaster of Kaleden, B.C. in the final match to win the 41st Pacific Northwest Master-40 Amateur Championship, held last week on the Mountain course at Bear Mountain Resort in Victoria, B.C.

The championship, which was conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA), consisted of the top male amateur golfers in the Pacific Northwest over the age of 40.

The host team from British Columbia emerged victorious in the 30th Anniversary edition of the North Pacific Junior Ladies Team Matches this past weekend. The competition, which was held at Pitt Meadows Golf Club this year, features teams from British Columbia, Washingotn, Oregon and Idaho.

The event is patterned after the Curtis Cup Matches for amateur women, which stimulates friendly rivalry for women golfers from the United States, Great Britain and Ireland.

British Columbia is proud to host the 2016 North Pacific Junior Ladies' Team Matches. This year marks the 30th anniversary of these team matches and will see squads from British Columbia, Idaho, Oregon and Washington competing Saturday, May 28th - Sunday, May 29th at Pitt Meadows Golf Club.

The event is patterned after the Curtis Cup Matches for amateur women (which stimulates friendly rivalry for women golfers from the United States, Great Britain and Ireland).

Yvon Jeaurond, the Service Manager at the Victoria Golf Club for the last 10 years is a finalist for a very prestigious award in the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). 

As one of three finalists and the lone Canadian, there is still time for you to vote and name Yvon as the MVT (Most Valuable Technician) in all of North America. You do not have to be in the golf business or a member of the GCSAA to vote. Voting closes June 10.

B.C. Amateur champion Jared du Toit is off to the NCAA Championship tourney in Eugene, Ore. Du Toit helped lead the Arizona State Sun Devils to a first-place finish at a NCAA regional tourney in Albuquerque, N.M. on Wednesday.

Du Toit, a Kimberley resident who is completing his junior year and won last year’s B.C. Amateur at Fairview Mountain in Oliver, shot rounds of 72, 73 and 75 to finish in a tie for fifth place at four-over par. The Sun Devils posted a 54-hole team score of 12-over par to beat the field by 12 shots.

(May 16, 2016) NORMAN, Okla. – Simon Fraser University sophomore Chris Crisologo was today named to the Division II PING All-Region West team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Crisologo was one of 112 players across eight regions - East, Atlantic, Southeast, South, Midwest, South Central, Central and West – who earned all-region honors for 2016.

Naomi Ko called it the round of her life and it could not have come at a better time for the 18-year-old Victoria native. A clutch five-under 67 in the second round of a 36-hole sectional qualifier at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash., earned Ko a spot in this summer’s U.S. Women’s Open.

Ko, a member of Canada’s national amateur team and former B.C. Junior Girls champion, topped a field of 48 players to earn the one spot available at the Monday qualifier.

North Vancouver’s Eugene Wong will have lots on the line when he plays his third Web.com Tour event of the season next week in South Carolina. Wong expects to draw into the BMW Charity Pro-Am, scheduled for May 19-22. The Web.com Tour will conduct its second reshuffle of the season after that event and a solid showing by Wong would help him get into more tournaments the rest of the season.

The PNGA Cup is headed back to Oregon, where it should feel right at home. After all, the Oregon Golf Association won five of the first seven PNGA Cup competitions, which began back in 2006. But after its win in 2012 the well went dry. Oregon had been blanked in the past three PNGA Cups. That changed Friday at Richmond Country Club when Oregon reclaimed the cup, beating Washington by a single point in the Ryder Cup-style team competition that also featured squads from British Columbia and Idaho.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida — PGA TOUR Champions and Pacific Links International announced that the 2016 Pacific Links Championship, originally set to be contested in Tianjin, China, has moved to Bear Mountain Resort in Victoria, British Columbia. The tournament dates will remain September 19-25, with the field increasing from 60 players to 81 players, and the purse remaining $2.5 million.

A nasty curveball was Erik Hanson’s bread-and-butter pitch when he was striking out batters in the majors. As an amateur golfer, Hanson now prefers to pound the ball straight down the middle. When his pitching career ended back in the late 1990s, Hanson transitioned to golf. He will tell you that switch came easy and that pitching and golfing have a lot in common.

Craig Doell and Lance Lundy had a nice opening day at the PNGA Cup, but were left lamenting the half-point that slipped away. After winning their morning four-ball match 5&3 over Jim Dunlap and Tom Greller of the Oregon Golf Association, Doell and Lundy had a one-up lead heading to the 18th tee of their afternoon alternate-shot match against Erik Hanson and Scott Johnson of the Washington State Golf Association.

This is Year No. 11 of the PNGA Cup and Alison Murdoch can tell you about every one of the previous 10. Murdoch has played in them all and once again will be part of Team British Columbia when this year’s PNGA Cup matches are played Thursday and Friday at Richmond Country Club.

“It’s a really, really good kickoff to the competitive season,” Murdoch said before she played her practice round Wednesday at Richmond. “You run into the really good people from around the region at the beginning of the season, so you have an idea of how your game is shaping up. I only get to play match play a couple of times a year, so I always enjoy this competition.”

UBC Men & Women Finish 1 -2 With UVic Men & Women At Conference Championships

The University of B.C.’s men’s and women’s golf teams both punched tickets to the NAIA national championships with convincing wins Tuesday at their conference tournaments. The men beat the field by 33 shots to win the Association of Independent Institutions title at Brassie Golf Club in Chesterton, Ind. 

The T-Birds posted a 54-hole score of 19-under par. The University of Victoria finished second.

The highly anticipated re-opening of Sagebrush is now scheduled for early June. The initial hope was to have the Merritt-area course open later this month, but general manager Scott Masse says a little more time is needed to get the facility ready. Sagebrush remained closed last year and was sold this past fall by its original owners to Newmark Group, a Langley-based residential construction company.

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Simon Fraser men’s golf team has been selected to the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf South Central/West Super Regional Championship for the third straight season. The Clan will be joined at the tournament with Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion Western Washington.

Simon Fraser finished the season ranked No. 3 in the West Region while Western Washington ranked No. 9. The 10 West Region teams selected will travel to Las Cruces, N.M., and will be joined by 10 teams from the South Central Region to play three rounds at the Western New Mexico State University Golf Course May 2-4.

Accomplished Junior Golfer Joins Pioneers’ Talent-Laden Freshman Class

DENVER – University of Denver men’s golf coach Erik Billinger announced today Roy Kang (North Vancouver, B.C.) has signed a national letter of intent to join the program for the 2016-17 academic year. Kang joins a talent-laden freshman class for DU that includes Isaac Petersilie (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Troy Dangler (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Eric Hagen (Aberdeen, Wash.).

“Roy is a very talented player and we’re thrilled that he’ll be joining our program for the upcoming season,” says Billinger.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Sophomore Michelle Waters of Qualicum Beach birdied the first playoff hole Tuesday to win medalist honours and lead Simon Fraser to the team championship at the 2016 GNAC Women’s Golf Championships at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course.

Waters, who shot Monday’s low round of 3-over-par 74, turned in a 77 on the second round to finish the day at 9-over-par 151. She held off a valiant comeback attempt by Saint Martin’s Jennifer Liedes for her first tournament victory.
