PEMBERTON -- Leo Harper came from behind to win the B.C. Juvenile Boys Championship and it didn’t take him long to take control in Thursday’s final round. The 16-year-old Burnaby resident blitzed the front nine at The Meadows at Pemberton, making the turn in just 31 strokes.

After starting his round with a birdie on the par 5 first hole -- which Harper birdied all three days -- Harper kept his foot on the gas. He added a birdie on No. 3, made a bogey on the fourth hole, but then ended his front nine by playing the final three holes in four-under par.

PEMBERTON -- Alyssa Chang has decided she’ll keep the blue hair for a little while longer. After all, it seems to be a good luck charm of sorts.

The 16-year-old from Surrey got the biggest win of her young golfing life Thursday when she captured the B.C. Juvenile Girls Championship at The Meadows at Pemberton. Afterwards, she gave partial credit to her blue hair, which she has been thinking about dying back to its original colour.

“My parents are not super strict but my mom said she didn’t want me dying my hair until I was 16,” Chang said with a laugh after her round. “So when we got to my 16th birthday I’m like, I kind of want to do something crazy this year and come out of my shell, so I dyed it blue.

"The craziest thing I have ever done. I feel like this year it has been kind of like a good luck charm . . .so I think I am going to keep the blue hair for a while.”

AURORA, Ont. – Golf Canada and Canadian Pacific (CP) have announced the names of 13 players who have received exemptions to compete in the 2019 CP Women’s Open, set to take place at Magna Golf Club from August 19-25. Headlining the list of exemptions is Canadian Golf Hall of Fame honoured member and CP Ambassador Lorie Kane.

The Charlottetown native will be making a record-setting 29th appearance at the CP Women’s Open appearance, besting World Golf Hall of Fame member JoAnne Carner (28) for most all-time appearances at the event.

Joining Kane will be a teenager who made national headlines last month, Vancouver’s Michelle Liu, who finished as the low Canadian at the 2019 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship in July to earn an exemption. Liu will be 12 years, nine months and seven days when she tees off at Magna Golf Club, becoming the youngest player ever to appear at the CP Women’s Open.

The record was previously held by Canadian star Brooke Henderson, who played as a 14-year-old in 2012.

A break in the PGA Tour China schedule has Vancouver’s Stuart Macdonald back in Canada, where life outside the ropes is a little less stressful. Macdonald is a rookie on the PGA Tour China circuit and acknowledges it has been something of an adventure.

“It has been pretty interesting,” he says. “It's a completely different culture over there. Obviously, there is a big language barrier and just doing the simple things that we would take for granted here can be challenging.”

Delta’s Mary Parsons won a medal Sunday and came close to earning a second one at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Parsons, Brigitte Thibault of Rosemere, Que., Joey Savoie of La Prairie, Que., and Austin Connelly of Lake Doucette, N.S., combined to win the bronze medal in the mixed team event on Sunday.

The Canadians finished with a team score of 552, just three shots behind the silver medalists from Paraguay. The United States took the gold medal with a team score of 544. “I think all four of us grinded out every shot to kind of get to where we are,” Parsons said. “We knew coming down the stretch we had to keep pushing because it wasn’t going to be over until it’s over.”

It wasn’t the stroll to the finish line Jim Rutledge had hoped for, but in the end, the 59-year-old from Victoria, BC captured the PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada.

When the final round began, Rutledge held a three-shot lead over Ken Tarling and a four-shot cushion over Danny King, however, as the day wore on Rutledge’s lead dwindled away. “I’m sure glad we ran out of holes out there this afternoon,” Rutledge joked after his final round 1-under-par 70.

“Going into the back-nine I hit some wayward shots, some miscues off the tee and the next thing you know I only end up winning by a shot.”

The folks at Titleist are very excited about the introduction of their new T-Series Irons and feel golfers will be as well when they get a chance to try them and be properly fitted at the same time.

A record five Canadians, including three British Columbians, have qualified for the PGA TOUR’s FedEx Cup playoffs. Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor, both of Abbotsford, and Merritt’s Roger Sloan will join Ontario natives Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes in this week’s first of three playoff events, The Northern Trust at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, N.J.

Hadwin enters the playoffs at No. 46 on the FedEx Cup points list and is in good position to be among the top 70 players who will advance to next week’s second playoff event, the BMW Championship at Medinah Country Club near Chicago. Taylor and Sloan will need big finishes in Jersey City to advance. Sloan enters the playoffs at No. 91, while Taylor is 117th.

PINEHURST, North Carolina — The 2019 U.S. Kids Golf World Championships wrapped up with a number of young Canadians placing in the top tier of the elite junior competition operated by U.S. Kids Golf.

The Top Canadian performances of the competition were by Aurora, Ontario’s Eddie Gu (Boys 9) and Richmond, BC’s Alex Zhang (Boys 10) who both took the top spot in their respective divisions at the conclusion of the 54-hole competition.

Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club got rave reviews from PGA TOUR players and proved to be a stiff test when it played host to the Canadian Open back in 2005 and 2011. 

Ashley Zibrik, Shaughnessy’s new Head Professional and Director of Golf, expects more of the same when a collection of the world’s best female players gather at the classic Southwest Marine Drive layout late next summer.

Shaughnessy was officially announced as the site of the LPGA Tour’s 2020 CP Women’s Open on Thursday. The tournament will be played over the Labour Day weekend, Sept. 3-6.

Flaman Fitness is pleased to present Charlford House’s 5th Annual Golf Tournament. The event will take place at Morgan Creek Golf Course, ranked as one of the ‘Top 50 Golf Courses in Canada’ by Score Magazine.

Since 1970, Charlford House has provided a supportive treatment facility for women who are ready to move on from their substance addiction.

Charlford House is a non-profit rehab residence, not an institution. All of the empathetic staff have had personal experience with addiction, but have been clean and sober for a long time. They have all had formal education and training that equips them to help others on the path to recovery.

The women who go to their facility are embarking on a journey to recovery, needing the safe and structured support of professional staff and peers. For this reason, they are situated in a family-oriented neighbourhood in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Ladner resident Mike Darby took some good-natured ribbing from some of his fellow PGA TOUR caddies after his recent win with Jim Herman at the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky.

The win was Darby’s third on the PGA TOUR. He had previously partnered with Abbotsford’s Nick Taylor to win the 2014 Sanderson Farms Championship and with American D.A. Points to win the 2017 Puerto Rico Open.

“The big inside joke on tour right now is me going for the opposite field Grand Slam,” Darby said with a chuckle in an interview this week. “If we had won in Reno last week I would have sealed it up. It’s either Reno or the Dominican Republic, so that’s my goal.”

The Vancouver Open Golf Tournament hosted by Vancouver Parks Golf and sponsored by Johnston Meier Insurance Agencies brings a great field of Men and Women golfers to Fraserview, McCleery and Langara.

Professional competitors come from the Vancouver Golf Tour, PGA of Canada, Mackenzie Tour Canada and other Mini-Tours. The flighted event is also open to amateurs with a registered handicap of 18 or less.

British Columbia kicked off a ten-day stretch of Championship Blind Golf in Creston, BC with the first-ever BC Provincial Championships, July 5^th and 6^th. The Championships had five BC players participating and two who were newcomers to blind golf. 

As one can see when looking at the results, both had success in their first championships. The Creston Golf Club provided a challenging course for these championships and Mother Nature also cooperated and provided great weather for the 36 holes of championship play.

This event was also the lead-in to two other championship events to follow taking place in BC in Kimberley (The Western Canadian Blind Golf Championships) and Cranbrook (The ISPS Handa Canadian Blind Golf Championships).

It is turning into a 'super summer' for Merritt’s Roger Sloan, who posted another top-10 finish Sunday on the PGA TOUR . Sloan tied for seventh at the Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nev.

In his last four events, Sloan has finished tied for 21st, T15, T10 and T7. He seems to have his game in solid shape with the PGA TOUR’s FedEx Cup playoffs set to start in two weeks.

Sloan finished with 37 points at the Barracuda, an event that uses the Stableford scoring system. That was 10 points behind winner Collin Morikawa, a rookie from Los Angeles. The nice finish in Reno moved Sloan up 13 spots on the FedEx Cup points list to 91st.  Surrey’s Adam Svensson finished 65th in Reno, but dropped five spots on the FedEX Cup list to 171st.

The PGA TOUR regular season wraps up at this week’s Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C. The four British Columbians who are PGA TOUR regulars -- Sloan, Svensson, Adam Hadwin (No.41 on FedEx list) and Nick Taylor (No. 114) -- are all scheduled to play at the Wyndham.

RED DEER, Alta – Brianna Navarrosa of San Diego, Calif., shot 4 under 68, overcoming a four-stroke deficit to capture the 106th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship held at Red Deer Golf & Country Club on Friday.

Michelle Liu of Vancouver finished as the low Canadian of the tournament, becoming the youngest player ever to earn an exemption to the CP Women’s Open. Liu carded a final round of 2 over, finishing at 1 over on the tournament in a tie for 12th.

Liu will be aged 12 years, nine months and six days when the 2019 CP Women’s Open tees off on August 22 at Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont.

VERNON -- This can’t last forever, but in a way it seems like it already has. Doug Roxburgh keeps adding to his incredible amateur record that began way back in 1969, when he won both the B.C. Amateur and B.C. Junior Boys Championships as a 17-year-old.

A half-century later, the Marine Drive Golf Club legend is still winning provincial championships. On Thursday evening at Vernon Golf & Country Club, the 67-year-old Roxburgh captured his fifth B.C. Senior Men’s title. Roxburgh closed with an even-par 72 to finish the 54-hole event at five-under par, two shots better than Jim Shaw of Sooke.

VERNON -- Doug Roxburgh has a battle on his hands at the B.C. Senior Men’s Championship and he’s okay with that. 

The 67-year-old Roxburgh will carry a slim two-shot lead into Thursday’s final round of the 54-hole championship at Vernon Golf & Country Club after his one-under 71 Wednesday left him at five-under for the tournament.

Jim Shaw, a longtime Mission-area resident who now calls Sooke home, is second at three-under. Shaw fired a two-under 70 on Wednesday. Nanaimo’s Sandy Harper and Victoria’s Neil O’leary are tied for third at two-under.

A four-under 68 in Tuesday’s opening round gave Vancouver’s Doug Roxburgh a share of the lead as the Canadian golf legend attempts to win his fifth B.C. Senior Men’s title.

The 67-year-old Roxburgh, a 13-time B.C. Amateur and four-time Canadian Amateur champion, did most of his damage on the front side at Vernon Golf & Country Club. He birdied his first hole and three others on the front nine to make the turn in 32.

Roxburgh, who is seeking his third straight Senior Men’s championship, shares the lead with Greg Bismeyer of Mission.
