NANOOSE BAY -- Angela Zhang has come up with a simple game plan for how to play Fairwinds Golf Club at this week’s B.C. Junior Girls Championship. “Stay patient,” Zhang said. “Don’t let the course beat you up. You just have to stay patient and let the putter do the talking.”

Unfortunately, Zhang’s putter didn’t do as much talking as she would have liked in Tuesday’s first round of the 72-hole event. The 17-year-old Vancouver resident only managed one birdie despite hitting 17 greens in regulation. Still, she salvaged a two-over 73 that gave her share of the lead with Victoria’s Cindy Koira.

By Brad Ziemer, British Columbia Golf

Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club was built in large part thanks to the contributions of many volunteers who donated their time, energy, resources and whatever else was necessary to make the course a reality. Fifty years later, as the club celebrates it golden anniversary, not much changed.

That same community spirit remains a big part of a course that certainly has to be regarded as one of British Columbia’s hidden gems. Sunshine Coast G&CC is blessed with a gorgeous landscape that makes a round feel a little like a walk in the park. But Jim Pringle, the longtime director of golf and head professional, thinks the real strength of the course are its members.

I told my wife it was going to be a tough day at the office, but she wasn’t buying it. She knew I was golfing. Again. And she knew this little one-day golf getaway was going to be different from all of the others.

After all, I was travelling in style. My day began at Helijet’s Vancouver Harbour terminal, where I boarded the 8:40 a.m. flight to Nanaimo. Did I mention the sun was shining? As luck would have it, it was one of those picture-postcard kind of days when we West Coasters really appreciate where we live.

The views were outstanding as our chopper flew low over the Lions Gate Bridge and out over the Strait of Georgia. Not even a couple of double-bogeys were going to spoil this day.

That was three shots behind winner Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa, Calif., who closed with an eight-under 63.

By Brad Ziemer, British Columbia Golf

He did not get the ultimate prize, but Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin did earn something else of note with his solo sixth-place finish Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open.

Hadwin claimed one of three spots that were up for grabs at Hamilton Golf & Country Club into next month’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Hadwin also hoisted his fourth Rivermead Cup as low Canadian in the Canadian Open. He had high hopes of ending the long Canadian victory drought when he began Sunday’s final round just one shot out of the lead.

But no one was going to catch Rory McIlroy, who closed with a nine-under 61 to finish 22-under, seven shots clear of the field.
