Doug Roxburgh, Greg Bismeyer Share First-Round Lead At B.C. Senior Men’s Championship

A four-under 68 in Tuesday’s opening round gave Vancouver’s Doug Roxburgh a share of the lead as the Canadian golf legend attempts to win his fifth B.C. Senior Men’s title.
The 67-year-old Roxburgh, a 13-time B.C. Amateur and four-time Canadian Amateur champion, did most of his damage on the front side at Vernon Golf & Country Club. He birdied his first hole and three others on the front nine to make the turn in 32.
Roxburgh, who is seeking his third straight Senior Men’s championship, shares the lead with Greg Bismeyer of Mission.
Bismeyer, a retired police officer who won the 2016 B.C. Mid-Master Championship, also played the front nine in 32 strokes and made nine straight pars on the back nine.
Roxburgh and Bismeyer have a two-shot lead on Neil Cleary of Victoria. Mike Mannion of Gibsons, Jim Shaw of Sooke, Norm Bradley of Kelowna and Paul Houvener of Mill Creek, Wash., all opened with one-under 71s and share fourth place.
The top three B.C. finishers after Thursday’s final round of the 54-hole event will represent the province in an inter-provincial team competition at the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship, which goes Sept. 10-13 in Scarborough, Ont.
Roxburgh also leads the Super-Senior Championship for players 65 and over. Laren Giocomuzzi of Kelowna is second after opening with an an even-par 72. The tournament also includes a 54-hole two-man best-ball competition. Bismeyer and Shaw lead at seven-under after the first round, one shot better than the team of Roxburgh and Kelly Steuart of Vernon.
