A hiking date on Vancouver Island for two friends turned into a life-saving rescue from the edge of a frigid waterfall that earned Janson Chapman a bravery medal and a lifetime partner.

Chapman, a golf course greens keeper from Colwood, was one of 46 people honoured Wednesday with medals of service by Gov. Gen. Julie Payette during a ceremony at British Columbia's government house.

Twenty-two-year-old Chapman said he was on a date last March with Becca Covey near Gold River when she slipped on ice, fell about 15 metres and ended up clinging from a log at the edge of the Lower Myra Falls.

  • Are Golf Courses Too Short?

Image credit (Michael Schroeder/ Golf Canada)

    By John Gordon/Courtesy Golf Canada

“Bifurcation” is a word we’re hearing more and more in the world of golf. It means to divide into two parts. But don’t let that simple definition fool you. It’s an increasingly controversial concept that strikes at the heart of the game as we know it.

The first area of the current bifurcation debate relates to the Rules of Golf. Should there be one set of guidelines for recreational golfers and another for elite amateurs and professionals?

The second bone of contention, which has set off near panic among many of my colleagues in the golf media and some golf administrators, is this: Are golf courses too short? Do we need to stretch them to 8,000 yards? Do we need to rein in the ever-advancing ball and club technology?

    No. And no.

  • European Tour Video: Top 5 Escapes Of 2017

Always able to remind us of how talented they are, the European Tour presents their Top 5 'Escapes' of 2017 for our entertainment.

Some of us may even be able to identify with this...at least in terms of attempting to 'escape' from a perilous position on the golf course.

  • Video: Think You Can Hit It Straight? How About 300 Yards Onto A Two-Yard Wide Fairway?

Once again the lads from the European Tour have given themselves a challenge and put it out there for the rest of us to marvel at.

Now, we know these guys, like their counterparts on the PGA TOUR and other professional circuits "Are Good"....but do you think one of them could land a ball some 300 yards away and keep it on the fairway...that's only 2 yards wide?

It is said that the widest fairway in golf is the first hole of the Old Course at St Andrews. But what is the narrowest? Might it be somewhere like Valderrama, perhaps Golf Club Milano, or possibly Crans-sur-Sierre?

    Not even close.

  • Video: European Tour Stars Give Golf Students The Worst Lesson They Can

3-Time Major Champion Padraig Harrington Gets Close To The Action As He Listens For His Student To Emit The Proper Grunt On His Swing - Image Courtesy European Tour/YouTube

Ever dreamed of having a one-on-one lesson with a golf legend? How would Padraig Harrington, Martin Kaymer, Ian Poulter or Lee Westwood work for you? Expert tuition, unparalleled knowledge and priceless experience imparted in person to you by some of the world's best.

    What a treat...

Ahead of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, the seventh Rolex Series event of the year and the penultimate week of the 2017 Race to Dubai, some lucky fans were given exactly that opportunity at Sun City. The only problem? The players were under strict instructions to do one thing – give the worst golf lessons they possibly could.

Further to our belief that the European Tour players have more fun, watch this video where four Ryder Cup stars prank real fans by giving the worst golf lessons they can.

  • Video: European Tour Fastest Hole Of Golf - Part 2

You have to love the guys on the European Tour and the fun they bring to the game as evidenced by the videos they put together for our entertainment. Not only do these videos show us the personalities of the players but they serve to also underline just how really talented all these players are even when they're just having fun.

In this version of an attempt to lead their country to a new Guinness World Records (trademark) title for the Fastest Hole of Golf by a Team of Four, England's Ian Poulter, France's Alex Levy and South Africa's George Coetzee captain their squads in a tremendously exciting, down to the last millisecond finish.

Filmed at night in Turkey, the four-man teams have to contend with a hole measuring over 500 yards, a water hazard and a stopwatch.

The result is closer than anyone could have predicted.

  • Making Time For Pace Of Play

    By Ian Fabian

I don’t know about you, but I can’t seem to watch a golf television broadcast or read an article pertaining to golf these days without the “Pace of Play” topic being brought up.

The topic has been directly linked to the subject of “Growing the Game” which is in itself another buzz phrase of the day. One of the main problems, in my estimation, is that absolutely no one believes they’re a slow player and therefore the pace of play has nothing to do with them.

Now that the 2017 Presidents Cup is in the books, it's been revealed how the U.S. jump-started their team game...by playing the Internationals in a no-holds-barred game of office mini-golf.

  • Video: European Tour Challenge - The Heckle!

We've all heard the promotional line from the PGA TOUR "These Guys Are Good"...and very true it is. Meanwhile, based on the antics the fellows on the European Tour get up to, perhaps their tag line should be "These Guys Are Nuts"...

The RSM and European Tour Player Performance Study explores time spent from address to impact and the effects of pre-shot routine.

So, to put this to the test, Andy Sullivan and Thorbjorn Olesen challenged Nicolas Colsaerts and Paul Waring to a hole of golf. But no ordinary hole of golf. Awash with heckles to distract their opponents - expect megaphones, water fights, blindfolds and much more.

  • Video: Phil Mickelson Gets Advice From Young Fan Then Says, "You Can Caddy For Me Anytime"

Long a fan favourite on the PGA TOUR, Phil Mickelson, playing in the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston, asked a young fan what he would do in this situation after 'Lefty' had found the left rough off the tee.

The young man, whose name is Riley, offered a quick no-nonsense reply, "If I could hit my 3-wood 260 I would probably go for it." It seems the gallery along with Mickelson, who said, "I like the way you think," felt that was the best strategy and the 3-time Masters Champion loaded up his 3-wood from the rough and let fly.

Following the shot, which appeared to turn out quite well, Mickelson turned to the youngster, smiled and said, "Riley, you can caddy for me anytime."

  • The Rules Of Golf And Why You Should (Or Shouldn’t) Know Them

    By Ian Fabian (contributing writer)

It’s been several years now, but it seems like only yesterday. My good golfing buddy Dave, who was Club Captain of the Men’s Club at the course we were members of, was attempting to convince me I should join the Board and contribute my ideas to the general benefit of the membership.

There was alcohol involved and after some debate back and forth I asked what position Dave thought I might be suited for. Dave replied there was an opening for the Chair of Rules and Discipline he thought I’d be perfect for.

This article will (eventually) deal with the Rules aspect of the position, but allow me to pause here and state that when you’re the Chair of the Discipline committee people are very friendly to you on a regular basis whether they’ve done anything to worry about or not.

  • The Key To Your Best Round Of Golf - Think About It

    by Ian Fabian (iG contributor)

There is no doubt in my mind that the key to your best round of golf ever is the “swing thought.”

We constantly hear that the game is far more mental than physical and therein lies the power of the swing thought. For those who may be new to the game let me endeavour to explain exactly how the swing thought works (or, in some cases, doesn’t work).

  • Video: The European Tour 'Left-Handed Challenge'

We love the fact that The European Tour helps promote the game and their players by producing fun videos that show not only the skill of these athletes but their humour and ultimately human side as well.

In their latest venture, the promoters from the Euro Tour have some of the world's best right-handed golfers taking a turn at a 'closest to the pin contest' which, in itself, isn't all that inspiring considering the talent of these fellows.

But when you make them turn around and hit the ball from the other side ala Phil Mickelson or Mike Weir, well, yeah these guys are good too....but not always.

Watch here as Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson and more of the world's best golfers take on the nearest-the-pin challenge at the 2017 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

  • Video: Guinness World Record For Fastest Hole Of Golf Played

With all the concern these days over pace of play, here's a different take on how to move play along.

Sergio Garcia hosted the attempt as teams from Spain, France and Denmark tried to break the Guinness World Records title for the Fastest hole of golf by a team of four.

Filmed on the par five fourth hole ahead of the Real Club Valderrama Open de España.

This inspiring effort featurie Garcia and 11 other European Tour stars.
