Weekly Top 10 Rankings: Victoria's Sihota On The Rise

This week's Top 10 list only reflects a few notable changes but there were some rather significant moves by players vying to get on that list, including Victoria's Jeevan Sihota who is 'quietly' becoming one of the players to watch in British Columbia and the rest of Canada at the ripe-old age of 13.

MEN’S TOP 10

Only one notable change in the Top-10 saw Albin Choi move up one spot back into the Top-10 after Adam Svensson slipped out of the Top-10 this past week. The Golf Canada Young Pro Squad member is coming off his first top-10 result of the season on the Web.com Tour, which gave him his first world ranking points finish of the year.

Adam Hadwin hangs on to the No. 1 ranking for the 18th straight week after finishing in a tie for 53rd at the PGA’s Dean & Deluca Invitational. The Abbotsford, B.C. golfer remains at No. 49 in the world which will get him into the remaining three majors plus World Golf Championship events if he stays inside the Top 50.

Other notable results: No. 2 Mackenzie Hughes missed the cut at PGA Dean & Deluca Invitational; No. 3 Graham DeLaet finished tied for 57th at PGA Dean & Deluca Invitational; No. 4 Nick Taylor finished tied for 61st at PGA Dean & Deluca Invitational; No. 5 David Hearn finished tied for 70th at PGA Dean & Deluca Invitational;

WOMEN’S TOP 10

Top ranked Brooke Henderson maintained her No. 14 world ranking after finishing in a tie for 21st at the LPGA Volvik Championship. It was her 10th top 25 result of the season in 12 events played.

No. 2 Alena Sharp slipped a spot in the world rankings after missing the cut at the LPGA event in Michigan. It was her first missed cut in the last five events she has played.

Other Notable Results: No. 3 Maude-Aimee Leblanc and No. 9 Jennifer Ha both missed the cut at LPGA Volvik Championship;

MEN’S AMATEUR TOP 10

Top ranked Jared du Toit maintained his No. 15 world ranking. The Kimberley, B.C. golfer finished up his senior season at Arizona State by earning second-team PAC-12 All-Academic honours, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing and a 3.38 grade point average. Du Toit notched eight top-10 finishes this year, including five top-five finishes and medalist honors at The Prestige at PGA West . He ends his collegiate career with 13 top-10 finishes and six top-five finishes.

Very little movement among the Top-10 in the world rankings this past week. Blair Bursey, the No. 10 ranked Canadian, picked up two places while No. 3 Hugo Bernard moved up a single spot.

Honourable mention goes to Kelvin Young Woong Lim, who gained 463 spots in the world rankings after winning the Investors Group Junior Spring Classic.

As well, Christopher Vandette picked up 766 spots after coming from behind to win the Future Links, driven by Acura Ontario Championship.

Biggest move: Louis-Alexandre Jobin-Colgan gained 1,058 spots in the world ranking after finishing in a tie for fourth at the Future Links, driven by Acura Ontario Championship. That earned the Quebec golfer a spot in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship. Victoria, BC's Jeevan Sihota jumped 1,051 places following up his victory at The Future Links Driven By Acura Pacific Championship at Chilliwack GC with a 3rd place finish in the Future Links, driven by Acura Ontario Championship. Sihota's win at Chilliwack had also earned him a berth in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.

WOMEN’S AMATEUR TOP 10

Maddie Szeryk picked up one place, up to No. 35 in the world ranking, after finishing in a tie for 14th at the NCAA Women’s Medal Championship. The Golf Canada National Team Squad member, who was playing as an individual, finished with a 71.24 stroke average, which set a new single-season record at Texas A&M. The junior finished in the top-10 in nine of her 12 events in 2017, posting six top-5 results. Szeryk was also named First Team All-American, becoming the first Texas A&M player to be named First Team All-America since 2010.

Jaclyn Lee also took part in the NCAA Championship, helping the Ohio State Buckeyes to the quarterfinals of the match play portion of the event after equalling a school best fourth place finish during stroke play. Lee was all-square in her quarterfinal match on the 19th hole when the team match was decided in USC’s favour. That left the Golf Canada National Team Squad member 3-1-2 in match play this season.

Outside the Top-10, Monet Chun moved up 61 spots in the world rankings and climbed up to No. 12 in the Canadian rankings following back-to-back victories. First, the Golf Canada Development Squad member claimed the Investors Group Junior Spring Classic by an impressive 11 strokes. She carried that dominant performance into the Future Links, driven by Acura Ontario Championship, winning by four shots

Joining the Top-20 is Ellie Szeryk, the sister of top ranked Canadian Maddie Szeryk. She slots in at No. 18 after making a jump of 115 spots in the world rankings following her runner-up performance at the Future Links, driven by Acura Ontario Championship.

Biggest Move: Alyssa DiMarcantonio gained 588 spots in the world ranking to not only make the biggest move among Canadian players but also the week’s most improved player in the world. The 14-year-old, who finished runner up at the Investors Group Junior Spring Classic and third at the Future Links, driven by Acura Ontario Championship, climbs up to world number 1,885.
