Two British Columbia juniors have advanced to the Round of 32 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Los Angeles.
Vancouver’s Vanessa Zhang and Lauren Kim of Surrey both won their Round of 64 matches Wednesday at Bel Air Country Club...
Zhang, a 16-year-old who plays out of Marine Drive Golf Club, beat Aliea Clark of New York 3&2. The match was tied through 10 holes, but the 17th-seeded Zhang made birdies to win both the 11th and 12th holes and take control of the match.
Kim, who turns 18 later this week, beat Brianna Navarrosa of San Diego 5&4 in a match of current and past Canadian Amateur champions. Kim is the current Canadian Amateur champ, having won the title just last week in Halifax. Navarrosa won the 2019 Canadian Amateur in Red Deer, Alta.
Kim, who was seeded 21st coming out of the 36-hole stroke play competition, did not lose a hole in the match. She was 3-up at the turn and closed out her opponent with a birdie on the 14th hole. Kim, who plays out of Morgan Creek Golf Club in Surrey, is a member of Canada’s national amateur team and is heading to the University of Texas later this month to begin her collegiate career.
Zhang is a member of Canada’s NextGen (Junior) team. Zhang will meet 16th-seeded Catherine Rao of Camarillo, Calif., in a Round of 32 match early Thursday morning, while Kim will meet the 53rd seed, Thienna Huynh of Lilburn, Ga.
If successful, they would play their Round of 16 matches on Thursday afternoon.
