2013 Women’s Amateur Championship
Final Recap
Cassy Isagawa Brings Flumerfelt Cup Across the Border as the British Columbia Women’s Amateur Champion
Isagawa matched the course record she set in round three to win the Championship by six strokes over Soo-Bin Kim
Pitt Meadows, B.C. (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)– Cassy Isagawa will be bringing the Flumerfelt Cup accolades across the border as British Columbia’ 2013 Women’s Amateur champion hosted by Pitt Meadows Golf Club (par 74, 6,220 yards) in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia.
Isagawa, originally from Wailuku, Hawaii but now a resident of Eugene, Oregon while attending the University of Oregon, matched her third-round course record six-under-par 68 in her final round to post a miraculous 16-under-par 280 total (70-74-68-68).
After starting her round with an unfortunate bogey on the par-5 500-yard first hole, one in which she birdied two out of her three previous days, Isagawa would explode for five birdies and an eagle over her next 17 holes, solidifying the victory that would allow her to bring a gold medal across the border as proof of her dominance.
Isagawa eagled the par-5 405-yard 8th hole for the second day in-a-row and would post a four-round total of six-under-par on that hole alone over the week. Her back-to-back record-setting 68′s were exactly what she needed to catch and surpass the eventual runner-up Soo-Bin Kim of Port Coquitlam.
“Today I just wanted to have fun and play my best and make sure I didn’t bogey 7 again,” laughed Isagawa. “I just had fun out there and I am really glad I had an awesome group today.”
Isagawa was playing with Kim, her college-golf friend, and Kelowna’s Megan Osland.
Asked what winning the British Columbia Women’s Amateur Championship meant to her as the only known international champion in its history, Isagawa was all smiles.
“It means a lot, it really does. I am really hoping I can encourage Americans and people from everywhere else to come play this tournament because it really is a great tournament and I enjoyed it.”
It wasn’t complete smooth sailing for Isagawa as Kim kept it very close throughout the day. At one point in her round she got it all the way to -12 before making an unfortunate double bogey on the final hole to post -10 overall (72-71-71-72-286). This is Kim’s second runner-up in-a-row in the Women’s Amateur as she lost to Richmond’s Christine Wong in last years competition at Christina Lake GC.
Finishing tied for third place were a pair of Team Canada National Team members in Wong and Taylor Kim of Surrey. Wong put together a closing 36-holes in four-under-par but couldn’t make enough birdies coming in to catch the pace set by Isagawa. She would score rounds of 74-73-72-72 for a 291 total over 72-holes.
Kim, after posting first and second rounds of even par 74, would close out her tournament in style with a 71 in her third round and a closing round two-under-par 72 (74-74-71-72)-291).
Sitting in a tie for fifth place were Kelowna’s Megan Osland and Coquitlam’s Jennifer Yang. Osland, coming into the final day in third place and playing with Kim and Isagawa, would fire a one-over-par 75 to post 293 (71-76-71-75). The San Jose State University Spartan battled all day and capped off a well played Championship with a birdie on the difficult 18th hole.
Yang, a team mate of Kim’s on the University of Washington Huskies Women’s golf team, played rounds of 74-71-74-74 to get into the top-5.
As a result of their fine play in this years’ Championship, Team BC heading to the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship from July 23-26th at the Club de Golf Beloeil in Beloeil, Quebec are Christine Wong, Taylor Kim and Megan Osland.

Kind words were mentioned following the closure of the Championship by the title holder Isagawa, none more thoughtful that her praise of Pitt Meadows GC.
“I really enjoed this golf course. It is really beautiful as it is so I would love to play it when it was a nice day. I am really glad I came up to play this tournament.”
British Columbia Golf would like to thank the staff, management and Board of Directors of the Pitt Meadows Golf Club for their gracious hospitality over the course of the Championship.

In the final round of the Mid-Amateur Championship, Proteau put togethe what would be a tournament-tying low 70 (broken 5 minutes following its posting), allowing her to surpass 23 other competitors on way to victory.
“Today was a very good round especially given the lack of momentum coming into it. I wasn’t feeling too super after yesterday’s round” stated the jubilant Proteau after hearing her named called as the champion.
Proteau started her championship off with a 76 followed by an uncharacteristic +6, 80. It was this round that Proteau was referring to before she picked apart Pitt Meadows on Thursday with five birdies and a single bogey to post +4 overall, 226 total (76-80-70).
Proteau notched her third Women’s Mid-Amateur title in five years and could have been victorious in last years event if it weren’t for losing in a playoff to Kyla Inaba.
“I was thinking about last year a little bit today and it did motivate me,” stated Proteau. “For me that did sting and that sting stayed with me a little while. It was motivation to not feel like that again.”
Proteau was incredibly happy when reminded that she could raise the Jackie Little trophy as Mid-Amateur champion.
“Jackie is a good friend of mine and started off as a mentor to me when I was younger at my first BC [Women's] Amateur,” mentioned Proteau.
“It is an honour. Jackie is a Hall of Famer and a first class competitor so to win something with her name on it is awesome.”
Finishing runner-up in the Mid-Amateur division was Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay. Stouffer was unable to hang onto her second round single-stroke lead because she ran into a red-hot Proteau. Stouffer would however be crowned the Master-40 division champion thanks to rounds of 78-77-76, 231 total. Holly Horwood of Vancouver finished solo third in the Mid-Amateur division after consistent rounds of 80-80-79, 239 total.

“Today was a pretty steady day. I finally made an eagle today,” mentioned Isagawa.
“It feels good knowing that I played good today. I made a few mistakes out there but no round is perfect.”
Asked about playing with her friend in tomorrow’s final round, Isagawa seemed excited at the chance to perform with her good mate.
“Soo-Bin and I have known each other since 2008 so it is good to have a competitor like her and the other BC girls going into the final round.
The reigning champion from 2012 in Richmond’s Christine Wong sits tied with Surrey’s Taylor Kim and Coquitlam’s Jennifer Yang at -3, seven strokes back of Isagawa’s pace
