Jared Dutoit Storms Back to Win British Columbia Junior Boys’ Championship in a Playoff

Dutoit, Jordan Lu and Kevin Vigna all posted -11 totals to claim Team BC spots at Canadian Junior Boys’ Championship

Revelstoke, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-Jared Dutoit tied the course record in his final round to storm back and win the 2013 British Columbia Junior Boys’ Championship in a three-way playoff at the Revelstoke Golf Club in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

Trailing by two strokes heading into today’s final round, the 18-year-old Dutoit from Kimberley tied the lowest score of the Championship by posting a course record tying seven-under-par 65 final round to get into a three-way playoff with Coquitlam’s Kevin Vigna, 17 and 15-year-old Jordan Lu of Vancouver.

Dutoit got off to a hot start today, making birdies on three of his first four holes, including his first hole. He would birdie the par-5 460 yard opening hole in each of his four rounds throughout the week.

“I started out playing well. I started out birdie-birdie then kind of scraped around,” told Dutoit.

“I made only one bogey on five then carried on to the back nine. Made three birdies and a nice one on 18 to kind of seal the deal and get into the playoff.”

Dutoit would make the turn on a very difficult front nine in four-under-par 33, closing with, as he mentioned, three birdies on his back nine. None were more important than the one on 18 to get him into a position for the playoff.

Vigna was playing in the group behind Dutoit with third round leaders Lu and Trevor Yu, 16 of Vancouver. Vigna and Lu both had birdie putts on the 72-hole that would have sealed their victory but both weren’t able to convert. None were more heartbreaking than Vigna’s, who had 12 feet slightly uphill, only to leave it three inches from dropping into the hole.

“Kevin left his putt right in the jaws [on 18], just short,” stated Dutoit.

Kevin Vigna cannot believe he left his birdie putt short on 18 but scored a very impressive final round to get into the playoff

“I guess that was unfortunate for him but kind of worked well for me and Jordan.”

After Lu posted his second straight five-under-par 67 (73-70-67-67-277) and Vigna a six-under-par 66 (71-72-68-66-277), all three at -11 headed to the 16th hole for the start of a sudden death playoff. The par 4, 405-yard hole was the only thing standing in the way of personal history for all three players.

With Lu drawing first drive, he would unfortunately pull-hook his tee shot left into the 18th fairway and would be stymied by trees on his approach that forced him to hit a low punch through the green into the shrubbery.

Vigna, only slightly in front of Lu in the round after an uncharacteristic poor drive, missed the green on the short side with his approach, leaving himself a tricky up-and-down for par.

Dutoit, outdriving his competitors by roughly 40 yards in the centre of the fairway, had only a wedge in his hand.

“That tee shot in the playoff I think was the best drive I hit in the entire tournament,” laughed Dutoit following the round.

Dutoit wouldn’t capitalize on his fantastic drive, missing the green almost directly beside Vigna. With Lu unable to get up and down for par, it was a virtual chip-off between Dutoit and Vigna. Vigna slightly stubbed his chip, leaving it short on the apron and was unable to make his putt, posting a bogey five along with Lu

Dutoit chipped to within four feet and made a relatively straightforward putt for a monumental win in his short career, capped by a powerful fist pump to the crowd of nearly 100 spectators as British Columbia’s Junior Boys’ champion.

The trio from the playoff will now represent Team BC at the upcoming Canadian Junior Boys’ in Garson, Ontario at the Timberwolf Golf Club. When asked on how he feels Team BC will compete against the other provinces, Dutoit was confident.

“I think we will take it. Both Kevin and Jordan are good friends of mine so I think we will get along good and play well as a team.”

Finishing tied for fourth place was Nanaimo’s Zach Anderson, 17 and Trevor Yu. Yu struggled on the day with a one-over-par 73 (73-67-70-73-283) while Anderson went bogey-free for a very impressive five-under-par 67 (72-73-71-67-283).

Sixteen quota spots for the Canadian Junior Boys’ Championship from July 30-August 2 were given out to the top 13 and ties following the close of the Championship.

British Columbia Golf would like to thank the staff, management and volunteers at the Revelstoke Golf Club for their support of amateur golf in the province.

Gunntas Sidhu fires Championship’s lowest round at 65; 16 players shoot under par on day three

Revelstoke, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-Jordan Lu and Trevor Yu are heading into the final round of the British Columbia Junior Boys’ Championship at the Revelstoke Golf Club deadlocked at six-under-par.

Following in the group behind him during today’s round was fellow Marine Drive Golf Club member and Vancouer resident Trevor Yu who posted a third round two-under-par 70.

Yu, 16 and a member of Team BC heading to the 2013 Canada Summer Games, has played his last two rounds of the Championship in seven-under-par, allowing himself to post the same 210 total as Lu (73-67-70).

Both players are friends and are looking forward to playing together in tomorrow’s final pairing.

“I look forward to playing with Jordan tomorrow,” mentioned Yu.

“He’s a great competitor and I’m sure there will be a lot of great shots out there tomorrow.”

“I feel pretty psyched for tomorrow. I am looking forward to playing with Trevor because he is my good friend,” stated Lu.

Both players were able to manage hot and windy playing conditions, a factor Lu said made him think twice about how he played.

“It was windier than yesterday. I was forced to calculate the wind and the greens were playing firm so I had to calculate the bounce too.”

Representing Marine Drive Golf Club at the Championship, both Lu and Yu (pictures above) took home the trophy as the best duo from any club across British Columbia.

Sitting in solo third and rounding out tomorrow’s lead group is Coquitlam’s Kevin Vigna. Vigna, 17, birdied his final two holes of the day to post a four-under-par 68, vaulting himself up the leader board to sit at -5 overall (71-72-68).

Second round leader Jared Dutoit, 18 of Kimberley, slid down the leader board into the fourth position thanks to a one-over-par 73. Dutoit, a winner of yesterday’s Zone Team competition, mentioned that “it was a struggle out there” when entering the scoring tent.

Solo fifth belongs to Chris Crisologo, 17 of Richmond thanks to an eight birdie third round 69, posting a three round total of 214, -2 (71-74-69).

The Championship’s lowest overall score came from the first group off this morning thanks to Port Coquitlam’s Gunntas Sidhu who went flawless over 18-holes to miss tying Revelstoke Golf Club’s course record by a single stroke, carding a seven-under-par 65. With the score, Sidhu, 18, skyrockets into a tie for sixth with Coquitlam’s Lucas Gatto.

“I knew there was a good score out there just not a 65,” stated an elated Sidhu. “The goal of the day was to get back into the mix and with this score I far exceeded my expectations.”

The Junior Boys’ Championship closes tomorrow with the final round beginning at 7:30am The top-3 finishers after tomorrow’s final round will be chosen to represent British Columbia on Team BC at the 2013 Canadian Junior Boys’ Championship being hosted by Timberwolf Golf Club, July 30-August 2 in Garson, Ontario.

Trevor Yu blisters Revelstoke Golf Club to post day’s best five-under-par 67; Zone 1 East claims Zone Team competition; Marine Drive Golf Club wins Club Team trophy

Revelstoke, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-Jared Dutoit took advantage of an early tee time to take a one stroke lead at the British Columbia Junior Boys’ Championship hosted by Revelstoke Golf Club.

He would match his outward half on his way in, posting a two-under-par 35 to get into the 60′s for the first time this tournament.

Sitting in solo second and a stroke back of Dutoit thanks to a Championship best five-under-par 67 is 16-year-old Trevor Yu of Vancouver. “I have been working really hard on my game. I am really glad to see that all my hard work is finally starting to pay off.”

Paying off is one thing but making it last is quite another and with 36 holes still remaining in the Championship, any one competitor can step up and overtake Dutoit for the lead including 16-year-old Andrew Funk of Sidney who posted a second-round two-under-par 70 getting him to -2 overall (72-70-142) and 18-year-old Burnaby resident Lucas Gatto who posted his second 71 in a row to get to -2 (71-71-142). Both players sit in a tie for third, three back of Dutoit.

Two others sit under par at 143 (-1) including Kevin Vigna, 17 of Coquitlam (71-72) and 15-year-old Jordan Lu of Vancouver (73-70). Both competitors look to Thursday to make a move and close the gap with Dutoit, setting up an exciting Friday final round.

Taking home the Zone Team competition is Zone 1 East, comprised of Dutoit, his brother Russell Dutoit, 16 also of Kimberley, Scott Merriam, 18 of Cranbrook and Evan Gresty, 17 of Kimberley. Finishing runner-up was Zone 4.
