111th BC Amateur
Final Recap
Charlie Hughes Crowned 111th BC Amateur Champion After Thrilling Playoff Victory
Hughes birdies both playoff holes to edge Adam Svensson in sudden death playoff; Hughes, Svensson and Kevin Carrigan named to Willingdon Cup team
Invermere, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-Charlie Hughes capped off a memorable week with a thrilling playoff victory over Adam Svensson to take home the Bostock Cup as the 111th BC Amateur champion at the Copper Point Golf Club in Invermere, British Columbia.
Coming into today’s final round, the 21-year-old Langley resident and recent University of Washington Husky graduate, sat one stroke back of Victoria’s Kevin Carrigan. After starting his round with an early birdie on the second hole, Hughes would bookend back-to-back birdies on holes five and six with bogeys on holes four and seven to make the turn at one-under-par.
Hughes would make make another birdie on the par 5 12th hole on the par 70, 6807 yard Copper Point Golf Club to get his round to two under.
“I birdied my 12th hole to get it to two under for the day and I knew I was in really good shape,” said Hughes.
“And then things kinda got ugly.”
Hughes walked onto the 14th tee with the knowledge that he had amassed a lead just he wasn’t sure how much. He would make bogeys on holes 14 and 15, bringing a mounting Svensson back into the mix after a Carrigan falter on holes 10 and 11 seemingly dropped him out of contention and made it a two player race
“I had three holes left [starting 16] and was one or two shots ahead and Svensson was making birdies ahead of me,” claimed Hughes.
“I made a bad bogey on 17 then made a 12 foot downhill slider on 18 to get into the playoff. I didn’t know if I was going to get into the playoff or not so that was a big relief when I walked up the hill [and made it].”
Svensson, a Team Canada Development Squad member from Surrey, had been working his way up the leader board all day. He made the turn in three-under-par and would finish birdie-birdie on holes 17 and 18 to post 65 on the day and -12 overall (71-68-69-65-272).
Svensson fist pumps after making an 8 foot birdie putt on 18 in regulation to post -12
As the excitement was unfolding, Carrigan was faltering in his bid for the trophy. A bogey on 10 and a triple bogey on 11 dropped him as far down the board as eight-under. He would finish in class however with a birdie on hole 15 and a 15 foot eagle putt on his final hole in front of a swath of spectators overlooking the 18th green.
Both Svensson and Hughes, sitting tied at -12 after regulation play, would head to the 18th hole to begin the sudden death playoff hole. Svensson, hitting first with a driver that would end up in a perfect position, put the pressure on Hughes.
Asked what was going through his head on the first hole after seeing Svensson’s drive, Hughes talked about his confidence and a little gamesmanship.
Charlie Hughes (purple) and Adam Svensson (Red) are briefed by British Columbia Golf Executive Director Kris Jonasson on the playoff procedures
“He picked up his tee right away and kind of did the leg kick so I thought I would do the same. I hit a 3-wood because I was’t driving the ball too well but then I hit a great 3-iron onto the green and a really good 2 putt from long range.”
Both players made tap-in birdies after long range two putts and would head to the par 4, 369 yard downhill 17th hole with the Bostock Trophy on the line.
After Svensson hit a towering draw that landed in the green side bunker, Hughes wanted to follow suit but was stopped by his player-turned-caddy and incoming University of Washington Husky freshman Kevin Kwon of Maple Ridge. Kwon had finished play for the day and was hanging around to watch the excitement unfold.
“I didnt have a caddy all week and Kevin offered for the playoff and I hit the driver horribly today,” mentioned Hughes.
“Adam was in pretty good shape in the bunker and I really wanted to hit driver and turn things around. Kevin made the right call. I guess I gotta thank him maybe more than anyone. I hit a great 3-wood there, an okay pitch and buried a 20 footer.”
Charlie Hughes nails his birdie putt on the second sudden death playoff hole to win the 111th BC Amateur
Hughes, with the help of Kwon, hit his putt directly in the heart of the hole and putt the pressure on Svensson with his third consecutive birdie dating back to regulation play.
Svensson pitched out of the bunker to 15 feet and left himself with a putt to keep the playoff going and try to win his second BC Amateur title. Unfortunately for Svensson, he would miss his putt on the short side, allowing Hughes to breath a sigh of relief as Amateur champion.
Asked how it felt to join the likes of Doug Roxburgh on the Bostock Trophy, Hughes realized how impressive the history of this Championship is in respect to golf in British Columbia.
“There are a lot of great champions on this trophy and I have kind of snuck my name on one piece there, one slot, so it feels good.”
Finishing in solo third at -11 (70-62-69-72-273) thanks to great play throughout the week was Carrigan. He will now join Hughes and Svensson on Team BC heading to the 2013 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at the Royal Colwood Golf Club and Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria on August 6-9.
Asked what the golfing world should expect heading to Victoria, Hughes was confident in the teams’ potential on home turf.
“We really want to take it to those Ontario boys. I think the Willingdon Cup trophy [Interprovincial competition] should stay here.”

Finishing in fourth all alone was Kwon at -7 (66-70-72-69-277) and tied for fifth at -6 was Truro, Nova Scotia’s Eric Banks (67-71-73-67-278) and West Vancouver’s Kevin Spooner (67-69-67-75-278).
Defending champion Riley Fleming of Airdrie, Alberta struggled on his final round but finished a respectable T14 over at one-over-par 285 (70-69-72-74).
British Columbia Golf would like to thank the Columbia Valley Golf Trail, Copper Point Golf Club and The Springs at Radium for their support of amateur golf in British Columbia.

Round Three Recap
Carrigan’s Lead Narrowed to One Heading Into Final Round at 111th BC Amateur Championship
Carrigan posts three-under-par to sit one ahead of Charlie Hughes
Carrigan, the 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion from Victoria, started the day four strokes ahead of his nearest competitors Kevin Spooner of West Vancouver and Maple Ridge’s Kevin Kwon. After posting four birdies on the front nine and another two on holes 10 and 11, it looked like Carrigan was running away with the Championship. That, however, was not the case.
In the group ahead of him was a charging Charlie Hughes of Langley. The University of Washington Husky alum was making birdies from everywhere, posting a bogey-free seven-under-par 65 in his third round, jumping the leader board to finish the day a single stroke back of Carrigan’s 201 total (-13) at 12-under-par.
“I felt pretty good for most of the day,” stated Hughes.
“I felt good with the putter. Most of the day I felt good and I had a lot of birdie looks. My swing feels a lot better now so I just gotta go to the range, tune it up and try and make birdies [tomorrow]. Everyone is making birdies so that is the name of the game right now.”
Charlie Hughes waves to the gallery on the 18th green after narrowly missing a long birdie putt to close his round at 65
Carrigan, who didn’t play poorly by any stretch of the imagination, was slightly dejected following his round thinking what could have been.
“I shot myself in the foot. I doubled the par three [14th] and then missed a short birdie putt on the next hole. I just struggled coming in and it had nothing to do with nerves just a couple of bad strokes and that is the way it goes.”
Asked how he would prepare for tomorrow with the lead at the BC Amateur, Carrigan didn’t hold back on his plans.
“Just go out there, hit drivers and keep it in play. The driver was going really well today so I am excited to go back out there and hit some fairways.”
Playing in his group today was Spooner, a fellow U of Washington alum with Hughes, who started his round off with a chip around double bogey before righting the ship and going seven-under-par over his next 17 holes to post a third round 67. With the 203 total, Spooner sits at -11 overall and will be paired with Hughes and Carrigan in tomorrow’s final pairing.
Kevin Spooner tees off at the 111th BC Amateur Championship
“I had a couple of bad chips and made 6 to start out,” said Spooner, a member of Capilano Golf and Country Club in West Vancouver.
“There was a lot of birdies out here so I was able to stay patient after that start, hit a couple of close iron shots and make a couple putts.”
Sliding down the leader board after an even-par 72 on a day that had red numbers from most of the leaders was Kwon. After getting his round to -4 through 13 holes, Kwon would give four strokes back over his next three holes, capped by an uncharacteristic triple bogey on the 15th hole. Kwon now sits at -6 over and will be paired with fellow Team Canada Development Squad member Adam Svensson of Surrey and Nanaimo’s Zach Anderson in tomorrow’s final round.
Round of the day went to San Diego State University Aztec Kevin Ko of Coquitlam who posted an eight-under-par 64. Ko started his round by going eight under through his first eleven holes before hitting a cold streak and parring out. At one point, thoughts of a 59 were creeping into the gallery who was in attendance at the Springs at Radium.
The final round is set to take place tomorrow morning at 7:30am at the Copper Point Golf Course in Invermere.
The top-3 competitors from the 111th BC Amateur Championship will represent British Columbia on Team BC at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship to be held August 6-9, 2013 at the Royal Colwood Golf Club and Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia.
Spectators are welcomed and encouraged to attend the event. Entrance is free of charge.

Round Two Recap
Kevin Carrigan Ties Course Record in Second Round to Skyrocket Into the Lead at 111th BC Amateur Championship
Carrigan’s 62 matches scores by Stephen Ames and Kent Eager at Copper Point Golf Club; Zone 4 wins Zone Championship; Royal Colwood GC wins Hamber Club Team
Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-Kevin Carrigan tied the course record at Copper Point Golf Club today to shoot himself into a four stroke lead at the 111th BC Amateur Championship, co-hosted by the Springs at Radium in Radium Hot Springs and the Copper Point Golf Club in Invermere.
Carrigan, entering the week feeling under-the-weather and unable to play a practice round at the par 70, 6807 yard Copper Point Golf Club, started the day at -2 thanks to a day one 70 at the Springs. Opening with two straight pars, Carrigan would break down his round’s flood gates, going six under over his next seven holes, capped by an eagle on the par 5 18th hole (his ninth of the day) to make the turn in an astonishing 30.
He would continue his roll on the back side, making a birdie on the par 5 610 yard 1st hole (his 10th of the (day) before carding his only blemish on the day, a double bogey six on the second.
Asked about how it felt to get off to such a great start, Carrigan was modest in nature.
“I hit my irons well but wasn’t particularly hitting it well off the tee so I just tried to keep it in play. I got a couple lucky bounces and made a couple of good putts. It makes it pretty easy to play when you can feed off guys like Kevin [Kwon] and Charlie [Hughes] who were playing so well out there.
Carrigan would bounce back from the double bogey, mixing in three more birdies over his next seven holes to close out his round in course record-tying fashion at eight-under-par 62 (70-62-132; -10). Carrigan joins the group of Canadian’s Kent Eger and PGA Tour professional Stephen Ames who have posted -8 at Copper Point.
“That’s really cool,” stated an elated Carrigan.
“It is a wicked golf course and it was great fun to play. Those are really great golfers to join so it is an honour.”
Asked how he would focus heading into his second BC Amateur Championship in-a-row holding the lead after round two, Carrigan was straightforward.
“It is what it is. I have to play solid and stick to the game plan.”
Hoping to catch Carrigan and sitting in a tie for second only four strokes back of Carrigan at six-under-par 136 are West Vancouver’s Kevin Spooner (67-69) and Maple Ridge’s Kevin Kwon (66-70). All three Kevin’s will be paired together in tomorrow’s third round.
Tied for fourth heading into the final 36-holes are Victoria’s Brent Wilson and Langley’s Charlie Hughes. Both players have carded identical 68-69′s in the first two rounds and are sitting in a comfortable position with plenty of golf left to play in the Championship. Eric Banks, a member of Team Canada and resident of Truro, Nova Scotia, is alone in sixth at -4 after rounds of 67-71.
Had it not been for Carrigan’s incredible play, Vancouver’s Stuart McDonald would have carded the days lowest round with a four-under-par 68. After rounds of 71-68, the member of Point Grey Golf and Country Club sits at three-under-par and in a tie for seventh with Vancouver’s Jacob Vanderpas (69-70-139), Surrey’s Adam Svensson (71-68-139) and defending champion Riley Fleming of Airdrie, Alberta (70-69-139).
Capturing the Hamber Club Team trophy are the contingent from Royal Colwood GC in Carrigan and Darren Day of Victoria. The duo from the island tied Swan-e-Set Bay Resort’s Kwon and Hughes but won due to retrogression.
Victors in the Zone Team championship are Zone 4′s Spooner, Chris Moore of Vancouver, Port Coquitlam’s Riley Lamb and Philip Mak of Vancouver. It was a close race as Zone 4 narrowly edged the quartet from Zone 5 by four strokes.
The Championship continues tomorrow at the Springs at Radium for the low 73 players who made the cut at +8.

Round One Recap
Kevin Kwon Leads a Jam Packed 111th BC Amateur Championship Leader Board After Day One
Twenty-two players shot under par during today’s first round at Copper Point and the Springs at Radium
Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-Team Canada Development Squad member Kevin Kwon jumps out to a one-stroke advantage after round one at the 111th BC Amateur Championship, co-hosted by the Springs at Radium (SR) in Radium Hot Springs and the Copper Point Golf Club (CO) in Invermere.
Kwon, a resident of Maple Ridge, continued his strong play as of late with an opening round six-under-par 66 on the par 72, 6767 yard Springs at Radium Course thanks to a bogey-free round. Kwon was the 2013 CN Future Links Pacific champion earlier this year at the Crown Isle Golf Resort in Courtenay and only recently competed in the prestigious Sahalee Players Championship where he finished T23.
“I am hitting the ball well,” stated Kwon.
“There are a lot of chances on the Springs course and I capitalized on them when I had to. The greens are tricky to read and the fact that I went bogey free was great.”
Following close behind Kwon after the first 18 holes is fellow Team Canada member Eric Banks of Truro, Nova Scotia. Banks, playing in his first BC Amateur Championship and a member of the University of Florida Gators Men’s Golf Team, shot a five-under-par 67 at the Springs. Tied with Banks after matching his 67 at the Springs are Vernon’s Brady Stead, Creston’s Kowan O’Keefe and Kevin Spooner of West Vancouver.
Pre-Championship favourite and talented amateur Charlie Hughes of Langley sits two strokes back of the lead at -4 (68) along with Victoria’s Brent Wilson. Both players recorded their scores on the Springs.
Other notables to post sub-par rounds after day one are recent British Columbia Junior Boys’ champion Jared Dutoit of Kimberley (70), defending BC Amateur champion Riley Fleming of Airdrie, Alberta (70), Victoria’s Kevin Carrigan (70) and team mate of Kwon on the Team Canada Development squad and recent Phil Mickelson Award Winner Adam Svensson of Surrey (71). Past champions David Rose of West Vancouver and Vancouver’s Doug Roxburgh both shot two-over-par 74′s to sit eight back of Kwon.
Posting the low round of the day at the Copper Point Golf Course was Calgary’s Scott Lowe. Lowe was only one of three players to break 70 on the par 70, 6807 yard Copper Point on the day. Lowe sits in a tie for 8th place along with six others.
The Championship continues tomorrow with action at both courses. Players will each get a chance to play both the Springs and Copper Point during the first two rounds with a cut to the low 70 and ties occurring following tomorrow’s round.

Columbia Valley Set to Host the 111th Playing of the BC Amateur Championship
Copper Point and the Springs at Radium are duel hosts to British Columbia’s Amateur Championship; Riley Fleming looks to defend his 2012 title
Richmond, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-The 111th BC Amateur Championship will be co-hosted by the Springs at Radium in Radium Hot Springs and the Copper Point Golf Club in Invermere from July 9-12, 2013.
Playing as a par 70 at 6807 yards, the Copper Point Golf Club in Invermere follows the rise and fall of the Kootenay Rockies with exceptional views of mountain vistas while providing a challenging layout for the Amateur competitors.
Co-hosting the event with Copper Point is the par 72, 6767 yard Springs at Radium GC in Radium Hot Springs. Nestled beside the Rocky Mountains and high above the picturesque Columbia River, the Springs at Radium will force Amateur competitors to manage every shot they take while soaking in the beauty of the surrounding Purcell Mountains.
This year’s BC Amateur showcases one of its strongest fields in recent years. Coming back to defend his 2012 title is Airdrie, Alberta’s Riley Fleming. Fleming, a sophomore at University of Texas at Arlington, captured the 2012 trophy and became the first non-British Columbian since Fred Couples in 1979 to capture the Bostock Trophy as Amateur Champion.
There are a number of competitors looking to dethrone Fleming as champion including 2011 BC Amateur champion David Rose of West Vancouver, 2012 Canadian Mid-Amateur champion Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, former University of Washington Husky Charlie Hughes of Langley and Team Canada National Development Squad members Kevin Kwon of Maple Ridge and Adam Svensson of Surrey. Svensson last won the BC Amateur in 2010 when it was hosted by Castlegar Golf Club.
A pair of players looking to re-enter competitive golf as consistent challengers are West Vancouver’s Kevin Spooner, also a graduate of the University of Washington Men’s Golf program and Truro, Nova Scotia’s Eric Banks.
Banks, a member of Team Canada, was the 2011 Nova Scotia Men’s Amateur and Junior Boys’ champion before having to take a break from golf to have surgery on his heart. He is now back into competitive golf, taking his rightful place this past year on the University of Florida Gators Men’s Golf team.
Spooner, an incredible talent playing out of Capilano Golf and Country Club, has taken a break from competitive golf in recent years but looks to challenge in the Columbia Valley in 2013. Spooner is best known for his outstanding play in a men’s night last year at Capilano where he posted a 14-unde-par 58 at the prestigious West Vancouver venue.
Other notables to follow on the leader board are Vancouver’s Chris Moore, North Vancouver’s Bryan Lichimo, Kimberley’s Jared Dutoit and Fort St. John’s Travis Eggers.
The 111th BC Amateur begins on Sunday with a Supplemental Qualifier for players who could not make their zones or are actively seeking a second chance at getting into the field (number of spots available to be confirmed following registration deadline on July 4th). First round action is set for both courses on Tuesday, July 9th with each player getting the opportunity to play both the Springs at Radium and Copper Point during their first two rounds. Round three is slated for the Springs at Radium with the final round taking place at Copper Point.
A cut to the low 70 and ties will take place following the second round..
During rounds one and two of the Championship, the Zone Team and Hamber Club Team competitions will be contested.
