Doug Roxburgh Goes Wire-to-Wire for First British Columbia Senior Men’s Title

Roxburgh posted a -6 total to win the overall Championship by three strokes; Tony Hatchwell wins Super Senior division title in one hole playoff over defending division title holder Ray Henry

Kamloops, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)- Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Doug Roxburgh went wire-to-wire for his first British Columbia Senior Men’s Championship at the Eaglepoint Golf Resort in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Starting the day four strokes ahead of his nearest competitor, the Vancouverite and Marine Drive Golf Club member made zero mistakes through his first 15 holes, posting birdies on holes 8, 12, 13 and 14 to get his round to -4, taking a seemingly permanent seat in the  driver’s seat for the Championship.

“I got to a point where I felt fairly safe. I think I was 5 or 6 up with four or five to play,” spoke Roxburgh following his round.

It wasn’t until his next tee shot on the par-4 350 yard 16th hole did he get into any trouble on his day.

“I didn’t hit a bad tee shot on 16, just pulled it a bit and I ended up 3-inches behind a tree and chipped out then just got a little sloppy from there.”

Roxburgh would post a double bogey 6 after being unable to get up-and-down for bogey from the front of the green, allowing a brief glimpse of hope for his playing partners Norm Bradley of Kelowna and Brian De Biasio of Qualicum Beach to back into the Championship

After making bogey on 17 after his drive took an unfortunate kick right upon landing, Roxburgh was only ahead by two strokes heading down 18 after a De Biasio birdie on 17. He was able to seal the deal on his final hole with a tap-in par.

His three round wire-to-wire line of 67-72-71 placed him at a six-under 210 total, good enough for an eventual three stroke win over De Biasio (72-71-70-213).

Asked about winning his first British Columbia Senior Men’s Championship in only his second try, Roxburgh laughed about his first try in last year’s Championship at the Nanaimo Golf Club.

“I started [playing in the Senior Men's Championship] last year when we played at Nanaimo at Sandy Harper’s home course and nobody was going to beat Sandy that year. It was very enjoyable 3 days of golf [this week], lots of fun, a great golf course, hospitality was fantastic. The staff and all the members that were out supporting us was great so it was a real fun 3 days.”

Finishing in solo third behind Roxburgh and De Biasio was Pemberton’s Lance Lundy who fired an incredible bogey free five-under-par 67 during today’s final round to finish the Championship at -2, 214 (74-73-67).

Taking home solo fourth and the final spot on Team British Columbia heading to the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship along with De Biasio and Lundy was Bradley at -1 (73-72-70-215). Roxburgh has declined to play on Team British Columbia as he does not intend on playing at Canadians.

Finishing in 5th, 6th and 7th respectively were Burnaby’s John Gallacher (78-70-69-217, +1), Abbotsford’s Brian Bates (71-76-71-218, +2) and West Vancouver’s Mark Spooner (76-72-71-219, +3).

Defending champion Sandy Harper of Nanaimo finished in T8 position after firing rounds of 75-75-70-220 (+4).

In the Super Senior division, Tony Hatchwell of Nanaimo and defending division title holder Ray Henry of Victoria both posted 54-hole 220 (+4) totals, requiring a sudden-death playoff. Both players headed to the first hole, a downhill par 4 that saw 14 birdies on the final day, to settle the title.

After both players hit poor second shots, Hatchwell was able to get up-and-down by making an 18-foot par putt for the win. Both Henry and Hatchwell finished T8 in the overall Championship along with Harper, Seattle’s Larry Daniels and 4-time past champion Gudmund Lindbjerg of Port Moody.

British Columbia Golf would like to thank the staff and volunteers from the Eaglepoint Golf Resort for their hospitality over the course of the Championship and their unwavering support of amateur golf in the province.

The team of De Biasio, Lundy and Bradley will now head to the Canadian Men’s Seniors at the Briar Club in Sutton West, Ontario from August 27-30th.

Round Two Recap

Doug Roxburgh Makes Strong Case for First British Columbia Senior Men’s Title at Eaglepoint Golf Resort

The Marine Drive Golf Club member sits at five-under-par the Championship with 18 holes remaining; Ray Henry continues strong pace to defend Super Senior division crown; Zone 6 awarded Zone Championship title

Kamloops, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)- Vancouver native Doug Roxburgh looks poised to claim his first British Columbia Senior Men’s title after firing rounds of 67-72 over 36 holes at the par 72, 6393 Eaglepoint Golf Resort in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Roxburgh, oft regarded as a Canadian amateur golfing legend who was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 1990, backed up his exhilarating five-under 67 first round with a very respectable even-par 72 on a day where only two players broke par.

Roxburgh played within his elements during today’s round, making very few mistakes on the desert course set within the mountains of Kamloops, posting a single birdie, one bogey and 16 pars over 18 holes. His two-round -5 total places him four shots ahead of his nearest competitor in Qualicum Beach’s Brian De Biasio who sits at -1, 143 after rounds of 72-71.

Talking about his round after submitting his scorecard, Roxburgh gave insight into his level par day.

“I played the same as yesterday, just didn’t make any putts.”

Lurking in third place, six strokes back of Roxburgh is Norm Bradley of Kelowna at +1, 145. Bradley’s two-day line of 73-72, positions him as the last player in the lead group for tomorrow’s final pairing with Roxburgh and De Biasio.

Sitting in 4th position in the overall Championship and leading the Super Senior division is Victoria’s Ray Henry. The Bear Mountain Golf Club member and defending Super Senior title holder carded a 36-hole total of 146, +2 with rounds of 74-72.

Eight strokes back of Roxburgh at +3 are Abbotsford’s Brian Bates (71-76-147), Nanaimo’s Tony Hatchwell (75-72-147) and Pemberton’s Lance Lundy (74-73-147). All three players will have to make a serious charge early on in tomorrow’s final to have any shot at catching the pace-setting Roxburgh. Defending champion Sandy Harper of Nanaimo shot consistent rounds of 75-75-150 to get himself into a tie for 12th with four others.

In the Super Senior division, Henry leads by a single shot over Hatchwell and six strokes over Lake Country’s James Lotwin (75-77-152). All three players will play in the second-to-last group off the first tee to vie for the Super Senior and overall Championship.

Capturing the 36-hole Zone Team Championship was the 4-man contingent representing Zone 6- North Island with a two day total of 440. The quartet of Hatchwell, De Biasio, Harper and Kim Hay of Qualicum Beach will having bragging rights as they beat their nearest competitors from Zone 2-Thompson Okanagan by six strokes.

A cut to the low 60 and ties was made following round two with 63 players at 158 (+14) or lower moving on. A single player at 159 (+15) was entered into the final day to meet the quota of 10 Super Senior division aged players making the cut.

Tomorrow’s final round begins at 7:30am with players going off the first and tenth holes. Spectators are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Entrance is free of charge.

Round One Recap

Doug Roxburgh Takes Four Stroke Lead at British Columbia Senior Men’s Championship

The Canadian Golf Hall of Famer posted 35-33 for a five-under-par 67; Defending Super Senior champion Ray Henry leads division in title defence; Zone 2 and 6 tied for Zone Championship

Kamloops, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Doug Roxburgh opened up his British Columbia Senior Men’s title chase in style, posting a five-under-par 67 to take a four stroke lead at the par-72, 6393 yard Eaglepoint Golf Resort in Kamloops.

The Vancouver resident and Marine Drive Golf Club member Roxburgh came into the round following an Ogopogo Invitational senior men’s division title with ball striking that he described in a joking manner before today’s round as ‘sketchy’. The final result from day one was anything but sketchy.

After opening with two birdies and one bogey on his outward half, Roxburgh would prove why he has claimed a record 13 BC Amateur Championships in his masterful amateur career by closing with two birdies and a par-5 finishing eagle for an inward 32, five-under 67 total.

Asked about his round, Roxburgh smiled when answering.

“I chipped and putted really well today. I chipped in once, made a 30-footer and then made a long one on 18 to finish.”

The opening 67 secures Roxburgh a four-stroke lead over Kelowna’s Wayne Schaeffer and Abbotsford’s Brian Bates who both fired one-under-par 71′s during gusty and hot conditions on the rolling desert terrain golf course. Also posting a respectable round one tally and in fourth by himself was Brian De Biasio of Qualicum Beach at even-par 72

Pre-tournament favourites Norm Bradley, of Kelowna and four-time champion Gudmund Lindbjerg of Port Moody both sit within striking distance of Roxburgh after round one. Bradley opened with a 73 compared to Lindbjerg’s 74.

Leading the Super Senior division is last year’s champion Ray Henry of Victoria. Henry, a member of Bear Mountain Golf Club, made a strong case for his division defence, opening with a steady two-over-par 74 on a day that featured temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius and wind gusting upward of 20 MPH.

Sitting comfortably behind Henry and ready to make a charge for the overall title and the Super Senior division title are Nanaimo’s Tony Hatchwell, Lake Country’s James Lotwin and White Rock’s Rick Woolley. All three players shot three-over-par 75′s to get into a tie for second in the Super Senior division, T14 overall.

After round one, Zone’s 2 and 6 sit tied at +6 cumulative score for a 222 total. Lurking close behind is the contingent from Zone 4 at +11, 227.

British Columbia Senior Men’s Championship Heads to Eaglepoint Golf Resort

Richmond, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-Eaglepoint Golf Resort in Kamloops is set to host the 124-player Senior Men’s Championship on July 29th-31st, 2013.

Featuring rolling terrains and fantastic views, the par 72 6393 yard Eaglpoint Golf Resort will be a strong test of golf for many senior aged male golfers trying to hoist the trophy come Thursday afternoon.

Defending his 2012 title is future British Columbia Golf Hall of Fame member and Nanaimo resident Sandy Harper. Harper, a tremendously talented golfer who has won at almost every level of golf in British Columbia, claimed the 2012 Championship in his first try on the senior circuit at his home club in Nanaimo.

Fellow Nanaimo Golf Club member and Nanaimo resident Tony Hatchwell looks to challenge as he did last year and dethrone Harper as the reigning champion to once again raise the trophy as the weeks’ best senior. Hatchwell last won the tournament in 2006 when it was hosted by the Quesnel Golf Club.

Other favourites in the field are Kelowna’s Norm Bradley, four time champion Gudmund Lindbjerg of Port Moody (2008-2011), Burnaby’s John Gallagher (2007) and Vancouver’s Steve Barry. Barry, a member at Marine Drive Golf Club, has an impressive amateur career including a BC Amateur title in 1981, two runner-up BC Amateur finishes in 1987 and 1991 as well as a British Columbia Junior Boys’ title in 1972.

Fellow Marine Drive Golf Club member and Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Doug Roxburgh has entered his name into the hat for next week’s Championship. Roxburgh looks to channel his past amateur successes, including a record 13 BC Amateur titles, to best the field at Eaglepoint.

Entered into the field is Seattle, Washington’s standout senior amateur Larry Daniels. Daniels, the 2011 Pacific Northwest Golf Association Senior Men’s champion and runner-up in last years PNGA senior, is considered one of the pacific northwest’s top senior amateur players having most notably qualified for the 2012 US Senior Open. Daniels would no doubt love to add a British Columbia Senior Men’s notch to his playing résumé.

Looking to defend his 2012 Super Senior title is Ray Henry of Victoria who won in a one-hole playoff last year against Delta’s Bill Wilms. Wilms, also in the field, will look for redemption in this years Championship.
