By Brad Ziemer, British Columbia Golf

When Joel Luyt talks to golfers about the wooden-head putters his company is producing in its Langley shop, many of them look at him like he’s Old Tom Morris.

Yeah, and maybe you want to sell me a feathery golf ball and some hickory-shafted irons to go with it.

“It’s a hurdle,” Luyt says of convincing the skeptics that Greenwood Golf’s hand-crafted wooden-head putters actually perform as well or better than many of today’s top-selling brands from the likes of Taylor Made, Ping, Callaway and Titleist.

By Brad Ziemer, British Columbia Golf

Hank Haney figures he knows a thing or two about golf instruction. “I feel like I am uniquely qualified,” Haney told a clinic at Morgan Creek Golf Course in Surrey this week. “I am really the only instructor who has taught arguably the greatest player in the history of the game in Tiger Woods and the worst player in the history of the game in Charles Barkley.”

That line drew lots of laughs from clinic participants -- mostly Vancouver-area club pros -- who had gathered at Morgan Creek to hear four of Callaway Golf’s heavy hitters talk golf.

By Brad Ziemer, British Columbia Golf

Like so many Canadian kids, Danny Seifried had a hockey stick in his hands long before he ever touched a golf club.

Seifried played junior hockey in the Kitchener area of southeastern Ontario and liked to fiddle with his stick to try and get the most of out of his slap shot.

He wasn’t introduced to golf until the pro at one of the local clubs invited Seifried and a few of his teammates, who included future NHLers Don and Dave Maloney, Paul Reinhart and Gaston Gingras, out for a round.

He handed them sets of rental clubs and off they went.
