Richmond, BC (British Columbia Golf) – Team British Columbia is set to return to Portland, Oregon on August 8 – 10, heading Riverside Golf and Country Club to defend the title at the 46th Hogan Cup.
Under the guidance of coach Todd Spring, a team of four BC junior boys will compete against some of the top juniors from across the western United States in the 36-hole event.
Trevor Yu, 17, will represent Team BC in Portland as part of a busy summer of competition. Yu has had a successful season, claiming the CN Future Links Western title earlier this summer, which he followed up days later with a second place finish at the 2014 BC Junior Boys Championship, finishing just a single stroke behind the champion. Yu went on to compete and finish T25 at Nationals. His 2014 campaign only adds to an already long list of achievements. In 2011, Yu won the BC Juvenile title and the following year claimed the National Juvenile title. The Marine Drive golfer has proven his ability to represent the province of British Columbia well; he is a 2013 Canada Games gold medalist.
Diego San Pedro will return to the Hogan Cup matches for the second consecutive year, he is the only returning member of last year’s title-winning team. In addition to representing BC internationally at the Hogan Cup, the 16-year-old recently finished in second place as part of one of the teams representing British Columbia in the prestigious Boys’ Junior America’s Cup matches at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club.
At only 16 years old, Alex Francois has become a well-decorated junior golfer, and is continually proving himself as a competitor to watch in all fields. Francois competed alongside San Pedro at the 2014 Boys’ Junior Americas Cup after he finished T4 this year at both the BC Junior Boys’ Championship and at the BC Amateur Championship, where he competed with several golfers his senior with collegiate level experience and beyond. Francois claimed the titles at the 2014 Pacific Future Links championship and the 2013 BC Juvenile championship in addition to a number of other acknowledgements.
Tristan Mandur is the youngest member of this year’s Hogan Cup team at 15 years old. The Arbutus Ridge golfer finished T16 at this year’s BC Junior Boys’ Championship and then went on to improve his standing at the national level competition, finishing T12. In the spring, Mandur was the BC School AA champion shooting two rounds of 69 at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort to claim the title.
As stated by the Oregon Golf Association, who hosts the prestigious event, “being selected to compete in Hogan Cup matches is an honor that has been bestowed to few individuals, and the excellence of past participants is indicative of the quality of the small, select field.
Hogan Cup alumni include tour players such as Bobby Clampett, Fred Couples, Joe Rassett, Jack Renner, Lennie Clements, Scott Simpson, Rick Fehr, Robert Gamez, Bill Sanders, Kirk Triplett, Jim Nelford, John Fought, Peter Jacobsen, Jeff Quinney, Casey Martin, Jason Gore and Tiger Woods.”
