SUN PEAKS RESORT — Shelly Stouffer recovered from an inauspicious start and ended the first round with a share of the lead as she attempts to win her fifth straight B.C. Senior Women’s Championship.

Stouffer’s opening tee shot at Sun Peaks Golf Course sailed right and rolled into a penalty area. She had to play a provisional and ended up with a double-bogey to start her round.

The Nanoose Bay resident recovered nicely as she played solid golf the rest of the way. Stouffer finished her round with a birdie on the par 5 18th hole and recorded a three-over 76.

That left her tied with fellow B.C. Golf Hall of Famer Jackie Little of Procter and June Zhang of Coquitlam. Vancouver’s Holly Horwood is just one back after her 77.

A field of 70 players are competing in the 54-hole event. Three separate championships are being contested at Sun Peaks, which is playing host to its first British Columbia Golf championship event. The Senior event is open to players 50 and over. The Super-Senior category is open to players 60 and older, while the Super Super Senior division is for players 70 and over.

Little, a winner of multiple British Columbia Golf championships, leads the Super Senior Division. Horwood, another past B.C. Senior Women’s winner, leads the Super Super Senior division.

The Zone 4 team of June Zhang and Kyoka Takahashi of Vancouver lead the 36-hole Zone competition with a combined score of 13-over. They have a two-shot lead on the Zone 6 team of Shelly Stouffer and Josee Deslauriers of Parksville.
