VICTORIA — Austin Krahn has already collected one British Columbia championship this season and now the 16-year-old Christina Lake resident is in search of a second.
Krahn, who won the inaugural B.C. Indigenous Championship this past spring at Nk’Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course in Oliver, has a share of the lead after the first round of the B.C. Juvenile Boys Championship.
Krahn and Vancouver’s Trevor Wong both opened with one-under 70s at Highland Pacific Golf Course in Victoria. Four players are just one shot behind Krahn and Wong.
While the boys competition is tight, Vancouver’s Jenny Kwon has a five-shot lead after the first round of B.C. Juvenile Girls Championship, which is also being contested at Highland Pacific.
Kwon, a 14-year-old who plays out of Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, won last week’s PNGA Junior Girls Championship in Bellingham. She opened with a one-under 70 at Highland Pacific that included five birdies.
Grace Aoting Yao of West Vancouver and Elsa Wu of Maple Ridge share second after shooting 75s.
Krahn, whose family owns and operates a par 3 course in Christina Lake, had three birdies in his round. Wong, a 15-year-old who plays out of Marine Drive, had three birdies and one eagle in his round.
Eric Joo of Coquitlam, Manpreet Lalh of Nanaimo, Max Osten of Delta and Aiden Liu of Richmond are tied for third after all shooting even-par 71s.
The 54-hole Juvenile tourney is open to players aged 16 and younger. The fields will be cut in half after Wednesday’s second round.
