Kim, Zhang Fall In Round Of 32 At U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship

Their run at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship is over. Surrey’s Lauren Kim and Vanessa Zhang of Vancouver lost their Round of 32 matches Thursday at Bel Air Country Club in Los Angeles.
Kim fell 1 down to Thienna Huynh of Lilburn, Ga., while Zhang lost 3&2 to Catherine Rao of Camarillo, Calif.,
Kim, who won last week’s Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship in Halifax, had emerged from the 36-hole stroke play competition seeded 21st. Zhang was the No. 17 seed.
They both won their Round of 64 matches on Wednesday.Kim beat Brianna Navarrosa of San Diego 5&4, while Zhang downed Aliea Clark of New York 3&2.
Kim, who plays out of Morgan Creek Golf Club in Surrey, is a member of Canada’s national amateur team and is heading to the University of Texas later this month to begin her collegiate career.
She’ll also play in this month’sCPKC Women’s Open at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, having earned an exemption into the LPGA event by winning the Canadian Women's Amateur.
Zhang, 16, is a member of Canada’s NextGen (Junior) team. She plays out of Marine Drive Golf Club.
