Ten To watch At B.C. Women’s Amateur, Mid-Am & Senior Championships

The B.C. Women’s Amateur Championship begins Tuesday at Campbell River Golf & Country Club. This year’s event is 54 holes, not the normal 72, with no cut.

The Women’s Mid-Amateur and Senior Women’s championships are also being contested at Campbell River. The tournament will adhere to strict COVID-19 protocols that include no caddies and no spectators.

BC Golf's Brad Ziemer looks at 10 players who figure to contend in their respective categories. Here they are in no particular order:

Angela Arora: Surrey teen won the B.C. Junior & Juvenile Championships in fine style earlier this month at Cowichan Golf Club, where she closed with a two-under 68 in the final round. Arora, a member of Canada’s National Junior Team, tied for fourth at last year’s B.C. Women’s Amateur at Nanaimo Golf Club.

Leah John: This Marine Drive member is one of a number of strong collegiate players in the field. John is entering her sophomore season at the University of Nevada in Reno. A runner-up for the B.C. Junior Girls title in 2018, John recently won her club championship by eight shots.

Nonie Marler: Another Marine Drive member who just may be the favourite in the Mid-Amateur division for players 25 and over. Marler captured the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur earlier this summer and certainly has the game to compete for the B.C. Women’s Amateur title.

Shelly Stouffer: Last year’s Mid-Amateur champion is competing in her first Senior championship, so is not eligible to defend her championship or compete for the B.C. Amateur crown. If Stouffer, a Nanoose Bay resident who plays out of Fairwinds Golf Club, is on her game, everyone else will be competing for second place in the senior division.

Phoebe Yue: West Vancouver resident won the B.C. Junior Girls Championship in 2018 at Kimberley Golf Club. Yue, who is heading into her junior year at UCLA, came close at last year’s Women’s Amateur at Nanaimo Golf Club. She had a share of the lead heading into the final round, but had a tough final day and finished tied for fourth.

Kathrine Chan: This Richmond resident has come close before at the B.C. Women’s Amateur. She tied for third in 2018 and was fifth in 2016. Chan, who competed in the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur, is entering her junior year at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif.

Michelle Liu: This 13-year-old is coming off a win at the B.C. Bantam Girls Championship at Mount Brenton Golf Club in Chemainus and was third at the recent B.C. Junior Girls Championship at Cowichan Golf Club. She was low Canadian at the 2019 Canadian Women’s Amateur, earning her a spot in the 2019 CP Women’s Open on the LPGA Tour.

Christina Proteau: All Proteau has done is win six B.C. Mid-Amateur titles, three B.C. Women’s Amateur championships and five Canadian Mid-Amateur titles. Not bad for a mom of two who works as a Crown prosecutor in Port Alberni.

Shania Remandaban: A member of the University of B.C. women’s golf team, this Coquitlam native led the T-Birds to the Canada West title last fall at Okanagan Golf Club in Kelowna. She won the individual title at that event, closing with a two-under 70.

Lauren Kim: This 15-year-old from Surrey was fourth at the recent B.C. Junior Girls Championship at Cowichan Golf Club, where her putter was ice cold. If Kim starts holing some putts, she will most definitely contend for the championship this week in Campbell River.
