He has won 13 B.C. Amateur Championships and now Doug Roxburgh has put himself in position to win his third B.C. Senior Men’s title.
Roxburgh fired a one-under 71 Tuesday to grab the first-round lead at the B.C. Senior & Super-Senior Men’s Championship at Myrtle Point Golf Club in Powell River. The 65-year-old Roxburgh, who plays out of Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, closed his round with one of three birdies on the day.
He carries a two-shot lead over another past Senior Men’s champion, Burnaby’s John Gallacher, into Wednesday second round of the 54-hole event. Roxburgh won his first B.C. Senior title in 2013 and won it again in 2014. He was second in 2015 and third last year.
Last week, Roxburgh made the cut in his 51st B.C. Amateur Championship at Morgan Creek Golf Club in Surrey. Lance Lundy of Pemberton sits alone in third place after firing a two-over 74 on Tuesday.
Defending champion Harry Ferguson of Invermere opened with a four-over 76 and is tied for fourth place. Roxburgh and Gallacher are also 1-2 in the Super-Senior category for players 65 and over. The top three players after Thursday’s final round will represent British Columbia at the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship, which goes Sept. 11-14 in Montreal.
