A few weeks ago, Doug Roxburgh wasn’t sure he’d bother to tee it up in his 51st B.C. Amateur Championship. His home course, Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, had a tough winter and was on temporary greens for most of the spring.
As a result, Roxburgh wasn’t able to practise or play much and he wasn’t sure his game would be up for the challenge at a tournament he has won a record 13 times. But to the surprise of no one, Roxburgh proved once again that he still has plenty of game.
The 65-year-old Hall of Famer shot a one-over 73 Wednesday and comfortably made the cut at the 115th playing of the B.C. Amateur at Morgan Creek Golf Course in Surrey.
Roxburgh sits at one-over par through 36 holes and is tied for 23rd place. The cut fell Wednesday at seven-over. “I broke my streak,” a delighted Roxburgh said. He was referring to the fact that he had missed his last two cuts at the B.C. Amateur. He had missed only one cut in his first 49 B.C. Ams.
“I have missed three cuts, all by one shot,” he said. “It’s nice to make the cut again. I was thinking about it today. But I got off to a good start and then got to two-over and got back to even and then made a sloppy bogey on the eighth hole (his 17th).”
Roxburgh finished his round with a nice par, rolling in a slick 10-foot downhill putt. “I have to learn to keep the ball below the hole,” he said with a laugh.
CHUNK YOU VERY MUCH: North Vancouver’s Roy Kang aced the 185-yard par 3 third hole Wednesday with a 7-iron. Make that a ‘chunked’ 7-iron. Kang confessed that he didn’t exactly flush his shot. “It was a big chunk,” Kang said with a laugh. “I one-handed it and then it bounced right into the hole. I didn’t expect that at all.” It was the sixth career hole-in-one for Kang, who just completed his freshman year at the University of Denver in Colorado. Two of them have come in competition.
SECOND-ROUND PUZZLE: Chris Crisologo figures he has a serious case of the second-round blues. The 21-year-old Richmond resident, who had a share of the first-round lead after a four-under 68 on Tuesday, shot a one-over 73 on Wednesday. “My second-round scoring average is about three or four strokes worse than my my first and last rounds,” Crisilogo said. “I have to figure that out.”
The Simon Fraser University standout is three-under through two rounds at Morgan Creek and tied for seventh place.
IN THE ZONE: The B.C. Amateur Championship also included a 36-hole zone competition that ended on Wednesday. Zone 3 (the Fraser Valley) won with a score of six-under. That was five shots better than Zone 5 (Southern Vancouver Island).
