Jared du Toit’s spectacular play at last week’s RBC Canadian Open has propelled the Kimberley resident up the world amateur golf rankings. The latest ranking released this week has du Toit at No. 25 in the world. He had been ranked 60th last week.
The 21-year-old finished tied for ninth at the Canadian Open, which he was playing on a sponsor’s exemption. He shot rounds of 67, 71, 70 and 71 to finish the event at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont., at nine-under par. That was three shots behind winner Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela.
Du Toit won the 2015 B.C. Amateur Championship at Fairview Mountain Golf Club in Oliver by seven shots. He also won the B.C. Junior Boys’ Championship in 2013.
He is heading into his senior season at Arizona State University, where he will have a new coach this fall. His former coach, Tim Mickelson, resigned earlier this month and Matt Thurmond, the former longtime coach at the University of Washington, was named earlier this week as his replacement.
Du Toit is Canada’s top-ranked male amateur and is a member of Golf Canada’s national team. He is competing this week in the Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club in western New York.
The Porter Cup attracts a number of the world’s top amateurs. Its past champions include David Duval, Phil Mickelson, John Cook, Ben Crenshaw and former Canadian amateur great Gary Cowan.
