SAN DIEGO, California (CJGA) — This week from July 14 - 17th, Canada’s top young aspiring golfers are competing in the prestigious IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships on nine golf courses around the San Diego area. This year, Canada will once again be well represented with 51 outstanding junior golfers.

The IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships boasts an impressive history with a strong line-up of previous champions including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els as well as many other PGA and LPGA stars. Since 1968, over seventy countries have been represented and the event annually draws a field of over 1200 junior golfers.

With one of the largest contingents, Canada is set to make its mark at this year’s competition. “We are always excited to be in San Diego this time of year,” said John Lawrence, Managing Director of Tour Operations for the CJGA.

“There are 51 of some of the best Canadian junior golfers participating this year. It just goes to show you how important the Junior Worlds are and the relationship we have with the San Diego Junior Golf Association.”

Not only is the IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships important to all the junior golfers who participate but it’s also a big week for college coaches, who use the tournament as a hunting ground for up-and-coming talent. One of the draws for coaches is the large international contingent the Junior World always attracts.
