A sprinkle of rain wasn’t enough to dampen the hot rounds put up by Shaughnessy’s Holly Horwood and Alberta’s Jessica Luciuk at the British Columbia Golf 2015 Mid-Master, Senior & Super Senior Women’s Championship at Cowichan Golf & Country Club on Wednesday.
Horwood and Luciuk each shot (+2) rounds of 74 on the challenging par-72 track and lead defending champion Jackie Little of Nanaimo – North Zone 6, who shot a (+4) round of 76.
Luciuk and Horwood share the lead in the Mid-Master category while Horwood leads the Senior and Super Senior Championships.
Horwood and Luciuk both got off to rough starts, making bogeys on each of their first three holes. But Luciuk, who calls Barrhead, AB home, steadied her golf game, making birdie on the par-5 10th and 14 pars to card a score befitting her plus handicap.
Horwood made three birdies, on 8, 14 and 18, but made double bogey on the par-4 17th to finish at 74 for the day. “I hit the ball decent but I hope I putt better tomorrow,” said Luciuk. “I hit a lot of solid shots today, but I’m not happy with how I scored.”
Luciuk, a teacher in the Alberta distance learning program, is spending two weeks on Vancouver Island at her brother Andrew’s home and will be teeing it up at the British Columbia Women’s Amateur at Duncan Meadows next week.

Horwood was able to shake off her 17th hole troubles with a birdie from the sand on the 18th. “I’m very happy with my finish,” said Horwood. “17 was not an easy hole and I didn’t play it well. . . Overall, I’m happy to be in contention.”
Little had an up-and-down round, making two bogeys on the front nine. Little then had a roller coaster on the back nine, as she made birdie on 10, bogey on 11, double bogey on 12, birdie on 13 and bogey on 17. “My driving and chipping will need some work,” said Little. “I hit it right on 12 and lost my ball, but overall, it was a good day, if I could have taken back three shots.”
Little admitted she felt a little extra pressure playing as the defending champion. “Yeah, there was some pressure,” she said, “but now that I look back at it, there was nothing spectacular and nothing horrendous.”
In other competitions being contested at Cowichan, Horwood and partner Diana Maughan lead the Best-Ball competition with a (-11) score of 61, two strokes ahead of the team of Judy Rollick and Sandra Skillings-Harney; the Zone 6 team of Jackie Little and Josee Deslauriers, with a score of (+11) 155 lead the Zone 4 team of Holly Horwood and Nancy Chow by three strokes in the Zone Competition; while Horwood leads the Stableford A Flight division, Georgina Hermans and Lorraine Clerihue share the lead in the Stableford B Flight division; and Diana Maughan leads the Stableford C Flight division.
