First Tee of BC Team Completes 100 Hole Hike Fundraiser for Youth on Course
SURREY, B.C. (November 7) - On October 25, 2024, the team from First Tee of BC, along with donors from RBC, embarked on an ambitious challenge: to complete a 100-hole hike fundraiser at Birdies and Buckets in Surrey, BC.
This remarkable event was part of a global initiative, with supporters from across the world rallying to support Youth on Course, an organization dedicated to providing young golfers with access to affordable tee times and opportunities to play.
A Day of Perseverance and Purpose
As dawn broke over Surrey, the First Tee team gathered, filled with excitement and determination. The 100-hole hike, a signature fundraising event for Youth on Course, not only tested their physical endurance but also underscored their commitment to empowering youth through golf. Participants included First Tee staff members Scott Stefani, Kelly Baker-Pabla, Tessa Kreiger, and Jonathan Zeng, along with members of RBC, all united by a shared passion for the game and a belief in its potential to change lives.
Supporting Youth on Course
Youth on Course is an international program designed to eliminate financial barriers for young golfers. For every round accessed through the program, participants pay just $5, while Youth on Course supplements the cost with an additional $10, ensuring that funds raised directly support local golf courses. Importantly, all funds raised within British Columbia stay local, allowing Youth on Course to build a strong network of young players in the province. The impact of Youth on Course is already evident, with a total of 11,503 rounds played across Canada this year—a remarkable 200% increase from the same time period in 2023. The program currently serves 3,013 participants across 97 golf courses, including 13 in BC. The funds raised from the 100-hole hike will play a crucial role in sustaining and expanding this initiative in British Columbia, allowing for greater access to affordable golf.
How to Get Involved
Accessing the Youth on Course program is straightforward. All First Tee participants automatically receive a Golf Canada Junior Membership, which also grants them membership to Youth on Course. Those interested in participating can easily register for a First Tee program or purchase a Golf Canada Junior Membership here. This streamlined process ensures that more young golfers can benefit from affordable access to courses.
Highlights from the Hike
The event was filled with camaraderie and inspiring moments. Despite challenges posed by inclement weather, which led to a venue change and reduced participation, the hike showcased the team's resilience. Originally slated for 24 participants, only 11 were able to join due to last-minute cancellations and an atmospheric river. Nonetheless, they managed to raise $4,000, which will fund 265 rounds of golf for Youth on Course participants in BC. Volunteers cheered participants on, providing refreshments and encouragement at various checkpoints, ensuring everyone stayed energized and motivated. Special thanks go to RBC Commercial Surrey Region for their generous $2,000 donation and to Keith Richmond, Vice-President, Commercial Financial Services at RBC Royal Bank, for bringing eight players to participate. The Surrey Firefighters Charitable Society also contributed $1,000 to support the event.
Looking Ahead
With the successful completion of the 100-Hole Hike, the First Tee of BC team is already looking forward to making this an annual event. They encourage others to host their own 100-Hole Hike, whether as a group of friends, individuals, or clubs. More information can be found on the Youth on Course website here.
