ST. JOHN'S, August 2025 (excerpted from Canada Games sources) – When golf returns to the Canada Summer Games from August 19–22 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Team British Columbia will be aiming to extend a storied legacy that includes a sweep of the individual and team golds in 2009, 2013, and again in 2022.
Golf first joined the Canada Summer Games in 2009, and Team BC made an immediate impact, winning all four golds in Prince Edward Island. That dominance returned in 2013 with individual titles from Kevin Kwon and Taylor Kim, and continued most recently at the postponed 2022 Games in Niagara, where Tina Jiang, Cooper Humphreys, Lauren Kim, and Ethan Posthumus swept the mixed team and individual titles. BC has stood on the podium at every Games since golf was introduced.
This year’s four-player squad brings both firepower and momentum. Austin Krahn arrives with three straight provincial wins, including the BC Junior Boys, BC Men’s Amateur, and the BC Indigenous Championship — titles he also won in 2024. The 17-year-old from Christina Lake secured his spot after an 8-hole playoff at the Golf Canada NextGen selection camp.
Joining him is Alex Zhang, the 2023 Canadian Junior and Juvenile Boys champion. After focusing more on academics, Zhang has returned strong in 2025, sweeping Zone 4 events and finishing top five in AJGA events across North America.
On the girls’ side, Jenny Kwon has logged wins and top-5 finishes at multiple NextGen and provincial championships. She’s joined by Elaine Liu, winner of the 2025 NextGen Pacific Championship and a top-10 finisher at the 2024 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship. Both are known for consistency and composure under pressure.
For the 2025 Canada Summer Games, Connor Kozak has been selected as the Head Coach for Team BC's golf team and is very upbeat about their prospects, "I'm excited for the opportunity to be named as Head Coach for Team BC and leading our team in St. John's... Can't wait to take part in my first summer games!"
BC Golf's Managing Director for Player Development, Debbie Pyne is making sure the team is laser-focussed on repeating as champions, "As defending gold medalists, Team BC is looking forward to the unique competitive golf experience of the 2025 Canada Summer Games. We must prepare for all conditions, as the Games will present challenges beyond just our competitors, including potential wind, smoke and humidity.”
The 2025 golf competition will take place at Bally Haly Golf & Country Club, a Graham Cooke-designed layout measuring 6,581 yards. The South Course features two returning nines, each opening with a par five and weaving through wetlands and forest. The club underwent capital construction to expand the driving range in preparation for the Games.
Golf at the Canada Summer Games is contested in both individual and team formats over 72 holes of stroke play. In addition to testing skill, the event fosters growth and sportsmanship among Canada’s best junior players, offering a national stage for future champions.
Spectators and fans will have added access to coverage this year, with CBC Newfoundland and Labrador broadcasting live onsite from Bally Haly. The St. John’s Morning Show will air from the golf course on Tuesday, August 19 from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., bringing interviews, updates, and atmosphere from one of the marquee venues of the Games.
