This past weekend BC Golf travelled Northwest to Terrace BC, to help facilitate the first Zone 7 Junior Championship in several years.

The Championship was played at the Beautiful Skeena Valley Golf Club and was combined with the Northwest Zones high school Championship. The event was also used to determine the qualifiers for the BC U19 Boys, and the BC Summer Games.

In total we had 44 junior golfers playing. A tremendous success given this was the first BC Golf associated event in years held in the region.

On the course Braiden Browne of Prince Rupert won in dramatic fashion. Browne and Dylan Hikisch of Smithers both finished at 76 (+3). Browne held strong winning with a par on the first playoff hole. Browne and Hikisch will be joined by Prince Rupert’s Maxim Hjelt making up 3 player Zone 7 team at the U19 Championship in Oliver BC.

Browne is also one of 4 boys to qualify for the BC Summer Games through this event. He will be joined by fellow Prince Rupert golfers Liam Bishop, and Matthew Weaver, along with Smithers’ Hugo Stiksma.

On the girls’ side, Alayna Mortimer of Whitehorse YK has qualified for the games. Mortimer is eligible as she is a member at Mountainview Golf Club in Whitehorse, which is a BC Golf Member Facility. She will be somewhat of a trailblazer when it comes to the Kelowna games as she is the first known Yukon athlete to participate at the games in golf.

We wanted to give a massive thank you to Zone 7 Chair, Scott Hjelt, Skeena Valley Head Professional, Dustin Ranger, and Dave Lewis from Caledonia Secondary School for making this event possible.
