NANAIMO — Shelly Stouffer’s quest for a third Canadian Senior Women’s Championship got off to a positive start in Tuesday’s first round at Nanaimo Golf Club.

The Nanoose Bay resident fired an even-par 72 and holds a one-shot lead over four-time Canadian Senior Women’s champion Mary-Ann Hayward of St. Thomas, Ont.

Stouffer, the 2021 and 2022 champion, had three birdies and three bogeys in her round.

Judith Kyrinis of Thornhill, Ont., another multiple past champion of this event, sits tied for third with Ruthie Maxwell of Austin, Nev., after opening with a five-over 77.

A field of 136 players is competing in this week’s 54-hole event. A Super Senior Championship for players aged 60 and older is also being contested at Nanaimo. Hayward leads that competition by four shots at one-over par.

Ontario leads the 36-hole inter-provincial team competition at six-over par. The B.C. team of Stouffer, June Zhang of Coquitlam and Kyoka Takahashi of Vancouver is second at nine-over.
