Burnaby’s Zhehui Yu finally made a bogey.

“It was bound to happen sometime,” the 17-year-old said with a laugh of what has been the only blemish on her scorecard through two rounds of the B.C. Junior Girls Championship at Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria.

That bogey on the par 3 14th hole came after Yu had gone bogey-free for the first 31 holes of the competition...

The Burnaby North Secondary student followed up her brilliant nine-under 64 in the opening round with a solid two-under 71 in the second round of the 72-hole event.

Her 11-under total through 36 holes has Yu 13 shots ahead of Victoria’s Emma Kral, who fired an even-par 73 in the second round to sit at two-over par at the halfway mark of the event for players aged 18 and under. Lillian Zhao of Port Moody is third at four-over par.

Yu insisted she did not want to know how big her lead is. “I haven’t checked the leaderboard,” she said. “I am trying to keep myself focused. I am feeling pretty good. The weather has been nice, the course is wonderful, and my playing partners have been wonderful, so it’s been great.”

Yu picked up where she left off as she birdied three of her first five holes of the second round. But she acknowledged her play was not nearly as crisp as it was in the first round. “I feel like I did everything I did yesterday, but just a little bit worse,” she said.

“That’s my honest assessment. I feel like I could have played a little better. There were a few putts I should have sunk and a few I probably shouldn’t have sunk, but that’s every round of golf, right? There was definitely a little more scrambling than yesterday.”

Yu, who is heading into Grade 12 at Burnaby North and plays out of Pitt Meadows Golf Club, said she has no plans to change her approach for the final two rounds. “Nope, I’m going into the next round with a clean slate and a clean mind.”

The 36-hole cut came at 17-over and 20 players survived to play the final two rounds.

The top three players after the final round will represent British Columbia in the inter-provincial team competition at the Canadian Junior Girls Championship, which goes Aug. 13-16 in Sainte Marie, Que.

A 36-hole Zone competition was won by the Zone 5 (Victoria) team of Emma Kral and Vienna Scheffer with a score of 11-over par. The Zone 2 team of Ellie Johnson of Vernon and Tierra Elchuk of Kelowna were second at 30-over.
