The B.C. Junior Boys Championship is being played this week at Quilchena Golf & Country Club in Richmond. The tournament has a rich history that includes some notable past winners. Here are our choices for the best stories...
Fred Couples won the 1978 B.C. Junior, defeating fellow Seattle-area player Brian Mogg by six shots at Seymour Golf & Country Club in North Vancouver. Couples went on to win the B.C. Amateur Championship the next year at Marine Drive Golf Club. He also went on to win a few other tournaments…..
Five-time PGA TOUR winner Nick Taylor of Abbotsford won the B.C. Junior in 2006 at Cranbrook Golf Club, where he beat Rafael Lee by two shots.
Victoria’s Scott Kral won back to back B.C. Juniors in 1995 & 1996. Kral’s 15-year-old daughter Emma finished second at last week’s B.C. Junior Girls Championship at Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria and his son William is in this week’s B.C. Junior Boys field at Quilchena.
The 2003 B.C. Junior Boys was held at Dawson Creek Golf Course, where 12-year-old Richard Lee — now a regular on the Asian Tour — shot a 62. That tourney was won on the eighth playoff hole by Ryan Lidkea of Beach Grove.
Abbotsford’s James Lepp won the 2002 B.C. Junior at Pitt Meadows Golf Club. Lepp also won the first of four straight B.C. Amateur Championships that year.
Doug Roxburgh won his first of back to back B.C. Juniors in 1969 at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club. Roxburgh also won his first of 13 B.C. Amateur titles that summer.
PGA TOUR regular Adam Svensson of Surrey won back-to-back B.C. Juniors in 2010 (Crown Isle) and 2011 (Rossland Trail).
Defending Junior Boys champion Austin Krahn, who won last year's title at Gallagher's Canyon in Kelowna, is a two-time winner of the B.C. Indigenous Championship.
