BALLY HALY GOLF COURSE, ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND, August 18, 2025 — Story by Staff - Team BC battled the elements to find themselves in a tie for second, just one stroke back of the lead.

Day 1 at the Canada Summer Games proved to be a challenge for every athlete in the field. Over 10mm of rain fell during the round, soaking both the course and players. Despite the wet and cold conditions, British Columbia’s Alex Zhang posted a 3-under-par 69—the low round of the day—to lead the individual male division.

On the girls' side, Jenny Kwon and Elaine Liu kept BC firmly in the hunt with rounds of 77 (+5) and 79 (+7) respectively, both finishing inside the top five individually. Team Quebec currently holds the overall lead at +1, but Team BC is poised to close the gap with strong play in the coming days.

“It was a solid day overall. I made a few putts so that helped the score,” Zhang said. “It was definitely super wet and cold so it played different than the practice round.”

Austin Krahn added: “Team BC at the Canada Summer Games this week has been a lot of fun so far. It has been great to spend time with friends and meet other athletes from around the country and to hear about how much time and effort they put into their sports. Round 1 was solid for us, not the best start, but we are right in the mix. You can't win a golf tournament in Round 1 but you can set yourself up to have an uphill battle. We did just enough today to stay in it and if we are able to string together a couple of solid rounds over the next few days we should be in a great spot."
