BURNABY, BC — Simon Fraser University golfer Justin Bjornson has made a name for himself on the fairways, but this summer, he’s found an entirely new audience — on the small screen.

Bjornson is the swing double for the lead character in Stick, a feel-good golf comedy series produced by Owen Wilson, now streaming on Apple TV+. The SFU Red Leafs standout golfer was brought on board after a local coach and golf advisor for the show recommended him. “I’ve always complained about being short, but this time it worked in my favour,” Bjornson told SFU News.

Filmed over five months in Vancouver, Stick features Wilson as a washed-up golf pro mentoring a teenage phenom, played by Peter Dager. Bjornson stood in for Dager during all key swing scenes, sharing the screen — and sometimes a chip match — with the likes of Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, and Max Homa.

Between working with A-list actors and PGA Tour stars, Bjornson embraced the surreal experience. “I didn’t just meet them — I got to pick their brains a little bit,” he said.

Now entering his third year at SFU, Bjornson continues to shine on the NCAA circuit while balancing his studies in communications. “You start as teammates, but you become this band of brothers,” he said.

And while the Red Leafs coaching staff may still call him “Hollywood,” Bjornson delivered the goods: “No yips,” he said. “The directors loved how few takes it took to get it right.”
