NEW YORK CITY, JULY 30, 2025 (excerpted from Financial Times and Decider)

Nearly 30 years after the 1996 cult comedy, Happy Gilmore 2 debuts on Netflix, reuniting Adam Sandler with his hot-tempered golfer persona. The film regains its chaotic, irreverent tone but relies heavily on callbacks and celebrity cameos—including legends like John Daly and musicians such as Bad Bunny and Eminem—all while parodying contemporary golf culture through the fictional "Maxi Golf" tour.

“There are laughs to be had… it isn’t terrible. It’s just not anything special, nothing with the spark of the original,” said FT review. A Decider assessment added that while the film offers absurd gags and heartfelt moments, it often meanders through cameo clutter and lacks deeper plot direction.

Benny Safdie’s portrayal of antagonist Frank Manatee provides comic relief, and Sandler’s on-screen chemistry with his daughter (played by Sunny Sandler) adds unexpected warmth. But critics noted that despite positive fan reactions, the film feels more like a nostalgic reunion than a fresh comedic statement.

Overview:

While Happy Gilmore 2 offers plenty of light laughter and playful callbacks, it doesn’t quite match the original energy—but it plays well in sequels cup and may satisfy die-hard fans.
