VICTORIA, AUGUST 13, 2025 (excerpted from PGA of BC)

In one of the most dramatic finishes in recent provincial championship history, Brycen Ko of the Musqueam Golf & Learning Academy captured the 2025 Axis Insurance PGA of BC Championship presented by GOLFTEC in a sudden-death playoff at Gorge Vale Golf Club.

Ko, the youngest competitor in the field, clinched the title by sinking a decisive six-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole against Dave Zibrik of Point Grey Golf & Country Club. The victory, sealed with composure beyond his years, earned Ko a $7,500 winner’s cheque and the most significant championship of his young professional career.

Final-Round Fireworks

The closing holes at Gorge Vale became a showcase of pressure golf. Ko arrived at the 18th fairway tied at 7-under par, then trailed Zibrik by one stroke after the Vancouver veteran birdied the 17th. Ko’s approach to the uphill 18th green left him with a daunting 50-foot putt from the lower tier. In what proved to be the moment of the tournament, he rolled the putt straight into the cup to force a tie at (−8).

“I had a feeling I needed to make it,” Ko said in an interview with PGA of BC staff. “The putt was tracking halfway, and I thought I maybe left it short, but I was very happy to see it go in.”

Zibrik had a chance to win outright on 18 but narrowly missed his mid-range birdie attempt, setting up the playoff.

Playoff Drama

On the opening playoff hole, Ko pulled his tee shot far right towards the out-of-bounds line, only to have an apartment resident assist in locating the ball still in play. From a poor lie in deep grass, he hacked his approach onto the green to keep pace with Zibrik. Both players made par, sending the contest to a second extra hole.

There, Ko struck a laser-like approach to six feet, while Zibrik faced a slippery 20-foot birdie try that burned the edge. Ko calmly holed his putt for birdie, punctuating a championship moment he described as “by far my biggest win.”
