Curtis Liu of Richmond recovered nicely from a rough  start to grab a share of the first-round lead at the B.C. Juvenile (U17) Championship at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club in Cobble Hill.

The 16-year-old was three-over par through his first four holes, but bounced back to shoot a two-under 70 that left him tied with White Rock’s Hyunseo Moon.

Liu shot a five-under 32 on the back nine at Arbutus Ridge that included an eagle on the par 5 18th hole. Moon’s round was almost a polar opposite to Liu’s. The 13-year-old got off to a fast start and was three-under through his first four holes.

He stumbled slightly on the back nine with a double-bogey on the par 4 15th hole and a bogey on the par 4 17th before closing with a birdie on the final hole.

Jeevan Lotay of Burnaby and Luke Bernakevitch of Victoria are just one stroke back after opening with one-under 71s. Lotay had four birdies and an eagle in his roller-coaster round.

On the girls’ side of the draw, twin sisters Lilian and Vivian Zhao of Port Moody are one-two after the first round. Lilian Zhao birdied five of her first 11 holes before settling for an even-par 72. That left her two shots up on her sister, Vivian.

Anna Wu of Victoria is third after opening with a three-over 73.

Twenty-five girls and 77 boys aged 16 and under are competing at Arbutus Ridge. The 54-hole tournament, the final event on British Columbia Golf’s championship schedule this summer, wraps up on Thursday.
