CHILLIWACK —Amy Lee is going to have to work for her three-peat. The 18-year-old Langley resident still leads the 121st playing of the B.C. Women’s Amateur Championship at Chilliwack Golf Club, but her lead was cut in half in Wednesday’s second round.

Lee shot a one-under 71 in the second round and sits at six-under par heading into the final round of the 54-hole championship. That’s two shots better than Surrey’s Rebecca Kim. Lee, who is seeking her third straight win at the B.C. Women’s Amateur, had a four-shot lead after the opening round. “Four shots, two shots, it really doesn’t matter to me,” Lee said of her lead. “It really won’t change the way I play tomorrow.”

Lee was playing late in the day when the wind picked up. “That made the back nine even tougher,” Lee said. “I don’t feel like I got everything out of my round today. I think the front nine is easier here and I didn’t play it very well.”

Kim, who is heading into her senior year at Oregon State University, shot a three-under 69. She had a brilliant front nine, shooting a five-under 32 that included a stretch of five birdies in six holes. “I had a couple of 20-footers drop in for birdie and I took advantage of the par 5s,” Kim said. “I feel like a lot of the par 5s here are pretty 'gettable' if you hit a good drive.”

Kim knows Lee will not be easy to catch, but is looking forward to the challenge in Thursday’s final round. “She’s a beast,” she said of Lee. “I’m excited about tomorrow.

Emma Kral, a 16-year-old Victoria native, is alone in third at three-under par. Kral fired a three-under 69 that included seven birdies. Her final one came on the  difficult par 4 18th hole, which was playing straight into a stiff wind. “I hit driver, 9-iron yesterday, today it was driver, 7-wood,” Kral said.

Along with the B.C. Women’s Amateur, the B.C. Mid-Amateur Championship for players aged 25 and older and a Mid-Master Championship for players 40 and over are also being contested at Chilliwack. Victoria’s Veronica Ivy leads both categories at three-over par after her even-par 72 in the second round. Vancouver’s Nonie Marler is one shot back in second place.
