NORTH VANCOUVER, AUGUST 21, 2025 (excerpted from Golf Canada)
The 2025 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship presented by BDO is underway at Seymour Golf and Country Club in North Vancouver, and British Columbia’s golfers are firmly in contention. The field of 155 players, ages 25 and older, is competing both for the national title and for exemptions into prestigious events like the 2025 U.S. Men’s Mid-Amateur in Arizona.
Ontario Claims Team Title, but BC Players Shine Individually
While Team Ontario secured the R. Bruce Forbes Trophy for a third straight year in the Inter-Provincial Team Championship, the spotlight locally has been on Delta’s Dustin Franko and Richmond’s Mike Aizawa.
Franko posted an even-par 71 on Wednesday to remain at 2-under for the championship, earning a share of the individual lead alongside Ontario’s Ryan Tsang. The steady round kept him within striking distance despite tough afternoon winds off Burrard Inlet.
Aizawa, meanwhile, delivered one of the best rounds of the day with a 2-under 69, vaulting him into solo third overall. His effort included a string of birdies on the inward nine and vaulted him into the top position in the Mid-Master division (40+), where he leads by one shot over Ontario’s Derek Dalziel.
“This course demands precision off the tee, and the greens are quick,” said Aizawa in an interview with Golf Canada staff. “I felt good about staying patient and giving myself chances.”
The BC Contenders
-
Dustin Franko (Delta, B.C.) – Tied for the overall Mid-Amateur lead at (−2). Has been consistent across two rounds and is chasing his first national title.
-
Mike Aizawa (Richmond, B.C.) – Solo third in the Mid-Amateur at even par and leading the Mid-Master division. His 69 was among the lowest rounds recorded on day two.
-
Charles Fitzsimmons (King, Ont.) – The two-time past champion is three shots back, but BC golfers are in stronger contention heading into Thursday’s third round.
The leaderboard was cut after Wednesday’s round, with the low 70 players and ties at +10 or better advancing into the final stretch of play.
Looking Ahead
With Franko and Aizawa both in contention, British Columbia could yet produce its first Canadian Mid-Amateur champion since Kevin Carrigan’s win in 2013. The four-round event runs through August 23, and the eventual champion will also secure a 10-year exemption into the Canadian Mid-Amateur and a direct berth into next year’s Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship.
