One by one, Shelly Stouffer is crossing them off her list. The B.C. Senior Women’s Amateur came first, shortly after the Nanoose Bay resident turned 50. The Pacific Northwest Golf Association, Canadian and U.S. Senior titles followed.
Now, Stouffer has added the Irish Senior Women’s Amateur Championship to her resumé and hopes to tick another big tournament off her golfing bucket list at this week’s R&A (British) Senior Women’s Championship...
Stouffer’s win last week in Ireland came at Kinsale Golf Club, where the wind howled for much of the 54-hole championship.
Stouffer, who won her sixth straight B.C. Senior Women’s title last month at Whistler Golf Club, had to battle from behind after a difficult start to the tournament. She opened with a four-over par 78 and was eight shots behind the leader heading into the second round.
“I didn’t have a great start on the back nine on the first day so I was kind of behind the eight-ball,” she said. “But I had a couple of good rounds to follow it, so it was nice.”
She closed with two rounds of two-under 72 to finish at even-par, three shots ahead of runner-up Laura Webb of Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
“The wind was really howling, especially for the final round,” Stouffer said. “It was windy for much of the Whistler event and I think that really helped prepare me for these conditions.”
Stouffer headed straight to England after her Irish win. The R&A Senior Women’s is being held at Walton Heath Golf Club, a highly acclaimed course about 30 kilometres south of London.
Stouffer had this to say when asked about the prospects of pulling off an Irish-British double: “You never know, it would be great to win that as well, but I know there’s going to be lots of good competition there.”
